In a famous incident in August 2010, a Chinese traffic jam stretched for over 100 kilometers and stranded drivers took over two weeks to get from one side to the other. Stemming from a routine lane closure for road maintenance, the traffic jam soon spiraled out of control, as cars piling up at the jam greatly outnumbered those leaving the other end. Sadly, in todays overpopulated world, these sorts of nightmare scenarios are only becoming more and more common, from chronic traffic jams in congested Chinese cities to Carmageddon in Los Angeles. In the world we live in today, many people live in urban or suburban areas. For this reason, residents of these metropolitan areas should be aware of the safety of the city they live in so they can take necessary precautions and educate youth about what actions are safe. In addition, judging the safety of a city allows the government of the city to analyze what factors and laws make other cities safer, and how they can replicate these conditions to make their city a safer place as well.

Contribution And Citation Impact Of Panjab University In Mathematics Research During 2005-14, Madhu Bansal, Jivesh Bansal, Harinder Singh Saini, B M. Gupta

This paper analyzes 230 research publications of the Panjab University in mathematics during ten years (2005-14), as covered in Scopus International database. The study quantifies publication data in various aspects of performance, such as the publication growth, research impact and quality, national and international collaboration, contribution and impact of authors, major areas of research, preferred channels of research communications and characteristics of higher cited papers. The findings reveal that Panjab University total publications in mathematics has increased at an annual average growth rate of 17.15% and registered an average citation impact per paper of 2.92 and impact factor per paper …

This work discusses the creation and use of infographies in an undergraduate mathematics course. Infographies are a visualization of information combining data, formulas, and images. This article discusses how to form an infographic and uses infographics on topics within mathematics and climate as examples. It concludes with survey data from undergraduate students on both the general use of infographics and on the specific infographics designed by the authors.

My Math GPS: Elementary Algebra Guided Problem Solving is a textbook that aligns to the CUNY Elementary Algebra Learning Objectives that are tested on the CUNY Elementary Algebra Final Exam (CEAFE). This book contextualizes arithmetic skills into Elementary Algebra content using a problem-solving pedagogy. Classroom assessments and online homework are available from the authors. In a paper to appear in PRIMUS, this textbook and accompanying pedagogy showed significant increases in learning outcomes.

The purpose of this study is to examine if there is any relationship between being bilingual, defined as speaking your native language at home and another language in school, and your mathematical ability. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health was used to compare the math grades of students who were not born in the US and speak English, Spanish, or Other at home. Also, data from the Bryant University first year students was used to test if students who speak a different language at home have a higher mathematical average than their monolingual peers. Created in 2006, Twitter is an online social networking service in which users share and read 140-character messages called Tweets. The site has approximately 288 million monthly active users who produce about 500 million Tweets per day. This study applies dynamical and statistical modeling strategies to quantify the spread of information on Twitter. Parameter estimates for the rates of infection and recovery are obtained using Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. Many U.S. students do not perform well on mathematics assessments with respect to algebra topics such as linear functions, a building-block for other functions. Poor achievement of U.S. middle school students in this topic is a problem.

U.S. eighth graders have had average mathematics scores on international comparison tests such as Third International Mathematics Science Study, later known as Trends in Mathematics and Science Study, (TIMSS)-1995, -99, -03, while Singapore students have had highest average scores. Factorial Growth Rates For The Number Of Hyperbolic 3-Manifolds Of A Given Volume, Christian Millichap

The work of Jørgensen and Thurston shows that there is a finite number N(v) of orientable hyperbolic 3-manifolds with any given volume v. In this paper, we construct examples showing that the number of hyperbolic knot complements with a given volume v can grow at least factorially fast with v. A similar statement holds for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds, obtained via Dehn surgery. Furthermore, we give explicit estimates for lower bounds of N(v) in terms of v for these examples. The binomial coefficients are interestingly always integral. However, when you generalize the binomial coefficients to any class of function, this is not always the case. Multiplicative functions satisfy the properties: f(ab) = f(a)f(b) when a and b are relatively prime, and f(1) = 1. Tom Edgar of Pacific Lutheran University and Michael Spivey of the University of Puget Sound developed a Corollary that determines which values of n and m will always have integral generalized binomial coefficients for all multiplicative functions. We investigate decompositions of Betti diagrams over a polynomial ring within the framework of Boij-Soederberg theory. That is, given a Betti diagram, we decompose it into pure diagrams. Relaxing the requirement that the degree sequences in such pure diagrams be totally ordered, we are able to define a multiplication law for Betti diagrams that respects the decomposition and allows us to write a simple expression of the decomposition of the Betti diagram of any complete intersection in terms of the degrees of its minimal generators. A prime sieve is an algorithm that finds the primes up to a bound n. We say that a prime sieve is incremental, if it can quickly determine if n+1 is prime after having found all primes up to n. We say a sieve is compact if it uses roughly √n space or less. In this paper, we present two new results.

This is a survey on reverse Carleson measures for various Hilbert spaces of analytic functions. These spaces include the Hardy, Bergman, certain harmonically weighted Dirichlet, Paley-Wiener, Fock, model (backward shift invariant), and de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. The reverse Carleson measure for backward shift invariant subspaces in the non-Hilbert situation is new.
