Inventing Around Edison’S Lamp Patent: The Role Of Patents In Stimulating Downstream Development And Competition, Ron D. Katznelson, John Howells Feb 2018

Inventing Around Edison’S Lamp Patent: The Role Of Patents In Stimulating Downstream Development And Competition, Ron D. Katznelson, John Howells

Ron D. Katznelson

We provide the first detailed empirical study of inventing around patent claims. The enforcement of Edison’s incandescent lamp patent in 1891-1894 stimulated a surge of patenting. Most of these later patents disclosed inventions around the Edison patent. Some of these patents introduced important new technology in their own right and became prior art for new fields, indicating that invention around patents contributes to dynamic efficiency. Contrary to widespread contemporary understanding, the Edison lamp patent did not suppress technological advance in electric lighting. The market position of General Electric (“GE”), the Edison patent-owner, weakened through the period of this patent’s enforcement.

Quasi-Platonic Psl2(Q)-Actions On Closed Riemann Surfaces, Sean A. Broughton Dec 2015

Quasi-Platonic Psl2(Q)-Actions On Closed Riemann Surfaces, Sean A. Broughton

S. Allen Broughton

This paper is the first of two papers whose combined goal is to explore the dessins d'enfant and symmetries of quasi-platonic actions of PSL2(q). A quasi-platonic action of a group G on a closed Riemann S surface is a conformal action for which S/G is a sphere and S->S/G is branched over {0, 1,infinity}. The unit interval in S/G may be lifted to a dessin d'enfant D, an embedded bipartite graph in S. The dessin forms the edges and vertices of a tiling on S by dihedrally symmetric polygons, generalizing the idea of a …

The Influence Of Radiative Heat Transfer And Hall Current On Mhd Flow In A Vertical Rotating Channel With Slip Condition, Innovative Research Publications Irp India, Hemant Poonia, Uma Shanker, S. S. Dhayal

Innovative Research Publications IRP India

In this paper the effects of Hall current on MHD free convection flow in a vertical rotating channel filled with porous medium have been studied. A uniform magnetic field is applied in the direction normal to the plates. The entire system rotates about an axis normal to the planes of the plates with uniform angular velocity ' . The temperature of one of the plates varies periodically and the temperature difference of the plates is high enough to induce radiative heat transfer. The effects of various parameters on the velocity and temperature field are shown graphically. Also the results on …

The Topology Of Tile Invariants, Michael P. Hitchman Jan 2015

The Topology Of Tile Invariants, Michael P. Hitchman

Michael P. Hitchman

In this note, we use techniques in the topology of 2-complexes to recast some tools that have arisen in the study of planar tiling questions. With spherical pictures, we show that the tile counting group associated to a set T of tiles and set of regions tileable by T is isomorphic to a quotient of the second homology group of a 2-complex built from T. In this topological setting, we derive some well-known tile invariants, one of which we apply to the solution of a tiling question involving modified rectangles.

Geometry: Drawing From The Islamic Tradition, Carol Bier Jan 2015

Geometry: Drawing From The Islamic Tradition, Carol Bier

Carol Bier

Getting students involved in careful observation and analysis and encouraging their exploration of cultural forms of expression is an excellent means of introducing mathematical ideas. Geometric patterns abound in Islamic art and architecture. Exhibiting great ingenuity over the centuries, Muslim artists and craftsmen created beautiful patterns to adorn architectural monuments and exquisite objects. The Alhambra in Spain and the Taj Mahal in India offer the most famous examples of extraordinary patterns using brick and glazed tile, or carved and inlaid marble. Other examples of patterns are made using metal, wood, and fiber. Students may gain conceptual and theoretical understanding of …

The Strauss Conjecture On Kerr Black Hole Backgrounds, Hans Lindblad, Jason Metcalfe, Christopher D. Sogge, Mihai H. Tohaneanu, Chengo Wang Aug 2014

The Strauss Conjecture On Kerr Black Hole Backgrounds, Hans Lindblad, Jason Metcalfe, Christopher D. Sogge, Mihai H. Tohaneanu, Chengo Wang

Mihai H. Tohaneanu

We examine solutions to semilinear wave equations on black hole backgrounds and give a proof of an analog of the Strauss conjecture on the Schwarzschild and Kerr, with small angular momentum, black hole backgrounds. The key estimates are a class of weighted Strichartz estimates, which are used near infinity where the metrics can be viewed as small perturbations of the Minkowski metric, and a localized energy estimate on the black hole background, which handles the behavior in the remaining compact set.

James T. Struck Ba, Bs, Aa, Mlis's Disproof Of Fermat's Last Theorem, James T. Struck

James T Struck

James T. Struck BA, BS, AA, MLIS provided three disproofs of Fermat's Last theorem using easily available integers like 0 and exponents like 3 showing the theorem to not apply to many cases. Disproofs in many or several cases are a type of disproof of the theorem in general. A mathematician like Pierre Fermat can want to show 0 is not equal to 5 and want a theorem to be disproved. This disproof of the theorem was first argued for on July 22, 2014 and posted on wikipedia.org and Berkeley Press. I therefore have a right to claim the award. …

Fibonacci Sequence And Orderliness As Observed In The Creations Of Allah, Mohd Rezuan Masran Mr. Jan 2014

Fibonacci Sequence And Orderliness As Observed In The Creations Of Allah, Mohd Rezuan Masran Mr.

Mr. Mohd Rezuan Masran

There are numerous verses in the Quran that encourage Muslims to observe the many creations of Allah. This article is an exploratory discuss ion on the observation of a sequence of numbers known as the Fibonacci sequence (also known as the Fibonacci numbers ) which can be observed in the creations of Allah. The history of Fibonacci sequence dated back to 1202 in the magnum opus of the Italian mathematician, Leonardo Pisano Fibonacci, entitled Liber Abaci ( Book of Calculation ). This article discusses verses in the Quran that encourage us to observe Allah’s creations. T here are many occurrences …

Localized Energy Estimates For Wave Equations On (1+4)-Dimensional Myers-Perry Space-Times, Parul Laul, Jason Metcalfe, Shreyas Tikare, Mihai H. Tohaneanu Jan 2014

Localized Energy Estimates For Wave Equations On (1+4)-Dimensional Myers-Perry Space-Times, Parul Laul, Jason Metcalfe, Shreyas Tikare, Mihai H. Tohaneanu

Mihai H. Tohaneanu

Localized energy estimates for the wave equation have been increasingly used to prove various other dispersive estimates. This article focuses on proving such localized energy estimates on (1+4)-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole backgrounds with small angular momenta. The Myers-Perry space-times are generalizations of higher dimensional Kerr backgrounds where additional planes of rotation are available while still maintaining axial symmetry. Once it is determined that all trapped geodesics have constant r, the method developed by Tataru and the fourth author, which perturbs off of the Schwarzschild case by using a pseudodifferential multiplier, can be adapted.

Pointwise Decay For The Maxwell Field On Black Hole Space-Times, Jason Metcalfe, Daniel Tataru, Mihai H. Tohaneanu

Mihai H. Tohaneanu

In this article we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the Maxwell system on a class of nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time, we establish peeling estimates for all the components of the Maxwell tensor.

Mathematical Modeling Reveals Kinetics Of Lymphocyte Recirculation In The Whole Organism, Vitaly Ganusov, Jeremy Auerbach Jan 2014

Mathematical Modeling Reveals Kinetics Of Lymphocyte Recirculation In The Whole Organism, Vitaly Ganusov, Jeremy Auerbach

Vitaly Ganusov

The kinetics of recirculation of naive lymphocytes in the body has important implications for the speed at which local infections are detected and controlled by immune responses. With a help of a novel mathematical model, we analyze experimental data on migration of 51Cr-labeled thoracic duct lymphocytes (TDLs) via major lymphoid and nonlymphoid tissues of rats in the absence of systemic antigenic stimulation. We show that at any point of time, 95% of lymphocytes in the blood travel via capillaries in the lung or sinusoids of the liver and only 5% migrate to secondary lymphoid tissues such as lymph nodes, Peyer's …
