The Utilization Of Chiral Ion Mobility Spectrometry For The Detection Of Enantiomeric Mixtures And Thermally Labile Compounds, Howard K. Holness

This dissertation utilized electrospray ion mobility mass spectrometry (ESI-IMS-MS) to develop methods necessary for the separation of chiral compounds of forensic interest. The compounds separated included ephedrines and pseudoephedrines, that occur as impurities in confiscated amphetamine type substances (ATS) in an effort to determine the origin of these substances. The ESI-IMS-MS technique proved to be faster and more cost effective than traditional chromatographic methods currently used to conduct chiral separations such as gas and liquid chromatography. Both mass spectrometric and computational analysis revealed the separation mechanism of these chiral interactions allowing for further development to separate other chiral compounds by …

This paper will discuss the methods, findings, and recommendations that have resulted from a study on poaching in western Uganda. Uganda is both a transit country for illegal animal species and their derivatives from neighboring countries as well as a home to a number of species that are targeted by poachers. Airborne particulate matter (PM) has been shown to increase the risk for asthma, chronic bronchitis, cardiopulmonary complications, and respiratory cell membrane damage/infection/leakage. PM levels are currently analyzed from two perspectives: stationary land-based monitoring (LBM) sites and total Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) atmospheric column measurements. Both perspectives often leave miles of space between measuring locations and will have a continually increasing cost from introducing/maintaining sites. The Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) satellite team hopes to begin investigating/archiving PM levels comprehensively via inputting MISR AOD measurements into a function/model which predicts the amount of ground level PM.

This article discusses the evolution of land conservation efforts and outcomes in the Northeast, examine major drivers of landscape change, and review key conservation tools that have been used to protect public values at the local and landscape levels. We then assess the current status of land conservation, and draw lessons for other regions facing conservation challenges across mixed ownership landscapes under varying development and land-use pressures. Finally, we explore new and emerging trends in the factors driving land development and conservation activities in an effort to assess the challenges that lie ahead.

International fisheries are being overexploited, and the current institutional structure in place to manage them is not working effectively. Presently, two sets of intergovernmental institutions oversee global fishing. The first comprises roughly three dozen regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs), approximately 19 of which are charged with regulating fishing in the areas they oversee. The second set consists of global organizations that touch on but do not directly regulate fisheries issues, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Bank, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). In the course of the past calendar year the United States has been struck by a series of droughts, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, wildfires, and floods whose size and path of resulting damage defy previously established patterns. The U.S. thus joins nations on every continent that have increasingly experienced extreme and extremely damaging weather events over the past two decades.

Organometallic pyridazines and compounds derived from them have been of interest in polymer research due to their atypical environmental stability (as compared to other non-aromatic organic semiconductors) as well as their conductivity. The off-metal synthesis and characterization of several pyridazyl thallium, manganese, and rhenium complexes, beginning with fulvenes 1,2- C5H3(COHR)(COR), are reported here. The diacyl fulvenes were treated with hydrazine hydrate to ring close to pyridazines. Next, the pyridazines were converted to their respective thallium salts through treatment with thallium (I) ethoxide. Lastly, the salts were transmetallated into the respective rhenium or manganese complexes through treatment with the respective metal …

Increasing demands for water resources, mounting concerns over threatened and endangered species, and obligations to abide by interstate water allocation agreements have motivated Nebraska to revisit traditional water management approaches.
