The Parmo De Berlin, Colombia: A Study Of Water Resources In A Rural Andean Community, Daniel Bodo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The condition of water resources in the rural Andean community of Berlin, Colombia, was explored for the purpose of future development in the area. Through investigation of water acquisition techniques, use, and water discharge methods, combined with analysis of chemical water quality tests, the overall pattern of water resources in the study area was revealed. Although the methods of acquiring water were not found to be especially damaging to water quality, the use, and more importantly, the methods of discharging waste water suggested a water resource base harboring certain questionable qualities. The quality of surface waters, as revealed through analysis …

Simulation Of The Sedimentology Of Sediment Detention Basins, A. J. Ward, C. T. Haan, B. J. Barfield Jun 1977

Simulation Of The Sedimentology Of Sediment Detention Basins, A. J. Ward, C. T. Haan, B. J. Barfield

KWRRI Research Reports

Sediment detention basins are a widely used means of controlling downstream sediment pollution resulting from stripmining and construction activities. A mathematical model for describing the sedimentation characteristics of detention basins has been developed. This model requires as inputs the inflow hydrograph, inflow sediment graph, sediment particle size distribution, detention basin stage-area relationship and detention basin stage-discharge relationship. Based on this information the model routes the water and sediment through the basin. In this routing process the outflow sediment concentration graph, the pattern of sediment deposition in the basin and the sediment trapping efficiency are estimated. Comparison of predicted results with …

Buffalo National River Ecosystem - Part Iii, M. D. Springer, E. B. Smith, D. G. Parker, R. L. Meyer, E. E. Dale, R. E. Babcock

Technical Reports

Samples for water quality analyses and phycological studies were taken from the nine standard sampling locations on the Buffalo River nine times during the period from March 1976 through February 1977. The April-June 1976 samples represent nearly identical conditions throughout the spring period; therefore, emphasis was placed on taxonomic research. As the early January sample was considered sufficient~y reflective of stable winter conditions, the December and February periods were. used for detailed microscopic examination of the rich and diverse diatom flora that was found in the river this year. A total of 273 taxa of diatoms were identified from the …

Preliminary Report On A Pleistocene Pond, Garden County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr. May 1977

Preliminary Report On A Pleistocene Pond, Garden County, Nebraska, Robert F. Diffendal Jr.

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Discontinuous Pleistocene pond deposits occur along the valley sides of Dankworth Canyon southeast of Lewellen, Nebraska. At one locality the beds exposed in a channel-fill up to six feet thick consist of sand-sized carbonate-rich sediments deposited in alter nating light and dark layers resembling varves. Microscopic examination of disaggregated samples reveals that most of the sediment consists of sand and silt often cemented into tubes. Other components include several kinds of freshwater ostracodes, gastropods, charophyte gyrogonites, and bone-like debris probably from fish.

Landsat Linear Trend Analysis - A Tool For Groundwater Exploration In Northern Arkansas, H. C. Macdonald, Kenneth F. Steele, Elizabeth Gaines Jan 1977

Landsat Linear Trend Analysis - A Tool For Groundwater Exploration In Northern Arkansas, H. C. Macdonald, Kenneth F. Steele, Elizabeth Gaines

Technical Reports

Intelligent development of groundwater resources is a process that requires a thorough understanding of the availability and movement of groundwater. In northern Arkansas knowledge of the deep aquifers is fairly limited, perhaps because economic factors and uncertain yields have discouraged exploitation. The development of these deeper aquifers to their fullest potential as reliable water sources depends on the delineation of high yield areas, a process that may be facilitated by linear trend analysis as outlined in this study. Satellite and photolineament maps of the 13 counties were prepared by use of LANDSAT images and Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service photo …

Water Supplies On Wheatbelt Farms : A General Picture, I A F Laing Jan 1977

Water Supplies On Wheatbelt Farms : A General Picture, I A F Laing

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In good rainfall years, farm dams provide water fo more than 50 per cent of the total stock in the wheatbelt.

Other sources include ground water supplies and the piped Comprehensive Water Scheme.

The March 1970 census included questions on farm water supplies including how farmers coped in the 1969-70 drought.

Farm Dams In The Wheatbelt, I A F Laing Jan 1977

Farm Dams In The Wheatbelt, I A F Laing

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Of the estimated 76 000 farm dams in the wheatbelt, about 8 per cent either leak or are salt affected. The remaining 70 000 dams are capable of holding water for livestock use and can be regarded as sercicable dams.

A great many of the serviceable dams are unreliable water supplies due to the combined effects of lack of runoff from catchments, shallow depth of storage and small size of storage in relation to expected demand from livestock and evaporation loss.

Effects Of Stream Channel Improvements On Downstream Floods, Yang H. Huang, Ronald K. Gaynor Jan 1977

Effects Of Stream Channel Improvements On Downstream Floods, Yang H. Huang, Ronald K. Gaynor

KWRRI Research Reports

This report presents a self-calibrating watershed model for predicting the effect of channel improvements on downstream floods. The model is called MOPSET because it is a modified version of OPSET developed several years ago at the University of Kentucky. OPSET is a computerized procedure for determining an optimum set of parameter values by matching synthesized flows with recorded flows. Major modifications include the replacement of the modified Muskingum method of channel routing by a kinematic finite difference method, the division of the watershed into a number of segments, and the inclusion of a storage routing procedure to take care of …

Hydrology And Water Quality In The Central Kentucky Karst: Phase 1, James F. Quinlan, Donald R. Rowe Jan 1977

Hydrology And Water Quality In The Central Kentucky Karst: Phase 1, James F. Quinlan, Donald R. Rowe

KWRRI Research Reports

Study of springs and cave streams has shown that heavy metal-rich effluent from a wastewater treatment plant can be traced to Hidden River Cave (beneath the city of Horse Cave) and thence 4 to 5 miles north to a group of 39 springs at 14 locations along a 5-mile reach of Green River. Nickel, chromium, copper and zinc in these effluent-bearing springs are in concentrations of as much as 30 times greater than other springs upstream and downstream from this reach, 20 times greater than the Green River, and 60 times greater than in shallow domestic wells between Horse Cave …

Saltland And What To Do About It, C V. Malcolm Jan 1977

Saltland And What To Do About It, C V. Malcolm

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Saltland can be conveniently divided into three main types on the basis of cause. Within each type their is great variation, and the types may merge or overlap.

The three aims of a saltland treatment programme are; reduce the groundwater levels or seepage flows as much as possible, reduce the capillary action which brings salt to the surface, and to revegetate the soils with the most useful plants that can survive.

Design Standards For Farm Surface Water Supplies, J L. Frith Jan 1977

Design Standards For Farm Surface Water Supplies, J L. Frith

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Design is usually concerned with getting adequate return from limited recources. Farm dams which dry up represent dam failure. Less seriously, so too do dams which, although not drying out, never fill; they waste a recource.
