Towards Expressive And Versatile Visualization-As-A-Service (Vaas), Tanner C. Hobson

Doctoral Dissertations

The rapid growth of data in scientific visualization has posed significant challenges to the scalability and availability of interactive visualization tools. These challenges can be largely attributed to the limitations of traditional monolithic applications in handling large datasets and accommodating multiple users or devices. To address these issues, the Visualization-as-a-Service (VaaS) architecture has emerged as a promising solution. VaaS leverages cloud-based visualization capabilities to provide on-demand and cost-effective interactive visualization. Existing VaaS has been simplistic by design with focuses on task-parallelism with single-user-per-device tasks for predetermined visualizations. This dissertation aims to extend the capabilities of VaaS by exploring data-parallel visualization …

Controllable Neural Synthesis For Natural Images And Vector Art, Difan Liu

Doctoral Dissertations

Neural image synthesis approaches have become increasingly popular over the last years due to their ability to generate photorealistic images useful for several applications, such as digital entertainment, mixed reality, synthetic dataset creation, computer art, to name a few. Despite the progress over the last years, current approaches lack two important aspects: (a) they often fail to capture long-range interactions in the image, and as a result, they fail to generate scenes with complex dependencies between their different objects or parts. (b) they often ignore the underlying 3D geometry of the shape/scene in the image, and as a result, they …

3d Shape Understanding And Generation, Matheus Gadelha Oct 2021

3d Shape Understanding And Generation, Matheus Gadelha

Doctoral Dissertations

In recent years, Machine Learning techniques have revolutionized solutions to longstanding image-based problems, like image classification, generation, semantic segmentation, object detection and many others. However, if we want to be able to build agents that can successfully interact with the real world, those techniques need to be capable of reasoning about the world as it truly is: a tridimensional space. There are two main challenges while handling 3D information in machine learning models. First, it is not clear what is the best 3D representation. For images, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) operating on raster images yield the best results in virtually …

Understanding The Dynamic Visual World: From Motion To Semantics, Huaizu Jiang Dec 2020

Understanding The Dynamic Visual World: From Motion To Semantics, Huaizu Jiang

Doctoral Dissertations

We live in a dynamic world, which is continuously in motion. Perceiving and interpreting the dynamic surroundings is an essential capability for an intelligent agent. Human beings have the remarkable capability to learn from limited data, with partial or little annotation, in sharp contrast to computational perception models that rely on large-scale, manually labeled data. Reliance on strongly supervised models with manually labeled data inherently prohibits us from modeling the dynamic visual world, as manual annotations are tedious, expensive, and not scalable, especially if we would like to solve multiple scene understanding tasks at the same time. Even worse, in …

The ability to recognize motion is one of the most important functions of our visual system. Motion allows us both to recognize objects and to get a better understanding of the 3D world in which we are moving. Because of its importance, motion is used to answer a wide variety of fundamental questions in computer vision such as: (1) Which objects are moving independently in the world? (2) Which objects are close and which objects are far away? (3) How is the camera moving?
My work addresses the problem of moving object segmentation in unconstrained videos. I developed a probabilistic …

Tools For Tutoring Theoretical Computer Science Topics, Mark Mccartin-Lim

Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis introduces COMPLEXITY TUTOR, a tutoring system to assist in learning abstract proof-based topics, which has been specifically targeted towards the population of computer science students studying theoretical computer science. Existing literature has shown tremendous educational benefits produced by active learning techniques, student-centered pedagogy, gamification and intelligent tutoring systems. However, previously, there had been almost no research on adapting these ideas to the domain of theoretical computer science. As a population, computer science students receive immediate feedback from compilers and debuggers, but receive no similar level of guidance for theoretical coursework. One hypothesis of this thesis is that immediate …

Game-Assisted Rehabilitation For Post-Stroke Survivors, Hee-Tae Jung Oct 2019

Game-Assisted Rehabilitation For Post-Stroke Survivors, Hee-Tae Jung

Doctoral Dissertations

Stroke is a leading cause of permanent impairments among its survivors. Although patients need to go through intensive, longitudinal rehabilitation to regain function before the stroke, patients show poor engagement and adherence to rehabilitation therapies which hampers their recovery. As a means to enhance stroke survivors' motivation, engagement, and adherence to intensive and longitudinal rehabilitation, the use of games in stroke rehabilitation has received attention from research and clinical communities. In order to realize this, it is important to take a holistic, end-to-end research approach that encompasses 1) the development of game technologies that are not only entertaining but also …

Style-Driven Shape Analysis And Synthesis, Zhaoliang Lun Nov 2017

Style-Driven Shape Analysis And Synthesis, Zhaoliang Lun

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation I will investigate algorithms that analyze stylistic properties of 3D shapes and automatically synthesize shapes given style specifications. I will start by introducing a structure-transcending method for style similarity evaluation between 3D shapes. Inspired by observations about style similarity in art history literature, we propose an algorithmically computed style similarity measure which identifies style related elements on the analyzed models and collates element-level geometric similarity measurements into an object-level style measure consistent with human perception. To achieve this consistency we employ crowdsourcing to learn the relative perceptual importance of a range of elementary shape distances and other …

A Period Examination Through Contemporary Energy Analysis Of Kevin Roche’S Fine Arts Center At University Of Massachusetts-Amherst, L Carl Fiocchi Jr

Doctoral Dissertations

Studies of buildings belonging to a subset of Modernist architecture, Brutalism, have included discussions pertaining to social and architectural history, critical reception, tectonic form and geometry inspirations, material property selections, period technology limitations, and migration of public perceptions. Evaluations of Brutalist buildings’ energy related performances have been restricted to anecdotal observations with particular focus on the building type’s poor thermal performance, a result of the preferred construction method, i.e. monolithic reinforced concrete used as structure, interior finish and exterior finish. A valid criticism, but one that served to dismiss discussion that the possibility of other positive design strategies limiting energy …

Long Range Motion Estimation And Applications, Laura Sevilla-Lara Mar 2015

Long Range Motion Estimation And Applications, Laura Sevilla-Lara

Doctoral Dissertations

Finding correspondences between images underlies many computer vision problems, such as op- tical flow, tracking, stereovision and alignment. Finding these correspondences involves formulating a matching function and optimizing it. This optimization process is often gradient descent, which avoids exhaustive search, but relies on the assumption of being in the basin of attraction of the right local minimum. This is often the case when the displacement is small, and current methods obtain very accurate results for small motions. However, when the motion is large and the matching function is abrupt this assumption is less likely to be true. One traditional way …
