Geologic Characterization Of The Nonconformity Interface Using Outcrop And Drillcore Analogs: Implications For Injection-Induced Seismicity, Kayla Smith Aug 2021

Geologic Characterization Of The Nonconformity Interface Using Outcrop And Drillcore Analogs: Implications For Injection-Induced Seismicity, Kayla Smith

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Starting around 2009, a greater number of earthquakes than anticipated have occurred in the midcontinent region of the United States. These earthquakes have been linked to increased rates and volumes of wastewater injection at several km’s depth into the Earth’s crust near a contact between crystalline metamorphic or igneous rock and overlying sedimentary rock, known as a nonconformity. While much is known about why these new earthquakes occur, comparatively little is known about the physical and chemical rock properties because the nonconformity contact is primarily buried under km’s of sedimentary rock in the midcontinent region. These rock properties are important …

Impact Of Interlayer Cation Composition And Strongly Bound Water On Smectite ẟ²H, As Determined By A Modified Tcea Method, Nadine J. Kanik Nov 2020

Impact Of Interlayer Cation Composition And Strongly Bound Water On Smectite ẟ²H, As Determined By A Modified Tcea Method, Nadine J. Kanik

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Interlayer cation composition and cation hydration enthalpy can potentially affect the excess hydrogen-yield and δ2H of smectitic clays. Complexities arise from condensed atmospheric water adsorbed on the clay, as it constitutes a potential additional source of hydrogen when attempting to measure the δ2H of structural OH groups. To approach this problem, the δ2H of different cation-saturated, dried forms of six Clay Minerals Society Source Clay smectites were measured. A modified sample drying and on-line High-Temperature-Conversion-Elemental-Analysis (TCEA) Continuous-Flow-Isotope-Ratio-Mass-Spectrometry protocol, facilitated isotopic measurements. A stronger interlayer cation hydration enthalpy (Ca2+>Na+>K+), …

An Investigation Into Transitions In Clay Mineral Chemistry On Mars, Seth Gainey Aug 2015

An Investigation Into Transitions In Clay Mineral Chemistry On Mars, Seth Gainey

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation is comprised of three studies investigating clay mineralogy on, or near the martian surface, with an introductory chapter, introducing and linking the three studies. Chapter two is on the subject of clay mineral synthesis, including Fe/Mg clay minerals which have been detected at multiple locations across the southern highlands. These Fe/Mg clay minerals have been previously interpreted as forming in anoxic/reducing environments, conducive to the preservation of organic matter. The results of this study suggest that the previous interpretation of Fe/Mg-rich clay as requiring anoxic/reducing conditions may not be accurate, as the minor presence of Mg (below what …

The Effects Of Clay On Glycerol/Carboxylic Acid Polymerization: Implications Of Mineral Controls In Prebiotic Chemistry, Joseph T. Romero Jan 2015

The Effects Of Clay On Glycerol/Carboxylic Acid Polymerization: Implications Of Mineral Controls In Prebiotic Chemistry, Joseph T. Romero

Geology: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Proto-enzymatic catalysis on early Earth is an important consideration in prebiotic chemistry research as it leads to the understanding of the emergence of the metabolic reaction networks. Contemporary enzymes are comprised of either organic or inorganic factors scaffolded by globular protein structure whereas we consider hyperbranched polyesters as a possible extant scaffold that is easier assembled than the peptide one. The goals of this project are to consider prebiotically plausible starting materials for such structure formation utilizing a subset of conditions for polymer synthesis involving the presence of mineral surfaces as well as temperature and hydration differential. As likely candidates …

Meteoric 10Be, FeD, And Clay In Critical Zone Soils, Front Range, Colorado, Cianna Wyshnytzky, James Mccarthy Mar 2013

Meteoric 10Be, FeD, And Clay In Critical Zone Soils, Front Range, Colorado, Cianna Wyshnytzky, James Mccarthy

Cianna E Wyshnytzky

The critical zone is the zone within which meteoric water, atmospheric gases, soil, and bedrock interact, encompassing the zone of soil formation (Anderson et al., 2007). The concentrations of various pedogenic compounds at a given location indicate the degree of weathering that has taken place in the Critical Zone. Among the products of chemical weathering are secondary phyllosilicate minerals (clays) and iron (Birkeland, 1999). At stable sites, chronosequence studies have shown that the amount of pedogenic iron oxide and clay increase as soils become older (McFadden and Hendricks, 1985).

Meteoric ¹⁰Be is a cosmogenic nuclide produced from oxygen and nitrogen …

An Evaluation Of The History Of Aqueous Activity On Mars Through A Survey Of Select Hypothesized Martian Deltas And Paleolakes Via The Analysis Of Mineralogy, Morphology, And Thermophysical Properties, Andrea C.G. Hughes May 2012

An Evaluation Of The History Of Aqueous Activity On Mars Through A Survey Of Select Hypothesized Martian Deltas And Paleolakes Via The Analysis Of Mineralogy, Morphology, And Thermophysical Properties, Andrea C.G. Hughes

Masters Theses

Aqueous deposits are an essential key to understanding the geologic/climatic history of water on Mars. The Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM), High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE), and Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) have enabled studies of Martian fan deposits in unprecedented detail, including the identification of hydrated minerals (such as phyllosilicates, carbonates, and sulfates) and morphologies consistent with formation in an aqueous environment associated with Martian sedimentary deposits. In this study, twenty-six previously identified fan-shaped deposits (hypothesized as possible deltas) have been examined for hydrated minerals in the beds and distal regions of the deposits. Six deposits …

The Groundwater Of The Area North Of Flathead Lake, Montana, Frederick M. Hilpert May 1951

The Groundwater Of The Area North Of Flathead Lake, Montana, Frederick M. Hilpert

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the reasons for the ground water variations in the area north of Flathead Lake, Montana. Several methods were used in pursuing this investigation. Hydrographs were made of the various wells showing the season to season change as well as the year to year variation.

Some Kentucky Clays, Including Kaolinic, Plastic And Fire Clays: Clays In Several Parts Of Kentucky, With Some Account Of Sands, Marls And Limestones, Aug Foerste, James H. Gardner

Bulletin--KGS

The bulletin is preliminary in character and is offered now simply in order to meet the urgent calls for all information concerning our clays that is at present available. A more comprehensive report, in which not only the geology and distribution of our clays, but also their technological values, will be given, will follow in due course.

Data for such a bulletin are being gathered as rapidly as circumstances will permit. Among the clays upon which more field work is required are some of those associated with the coals and Conglomerate Measures of the Eastern Coalfield; those in other Lower …
