Calcium Isotopes In The Saint Agatha Kettle Lake Deposits Of Southern Ontario, Emma-Dawn Ferguson

The St. Agatha kettle lake deposits, ON, Canada, contain a thick section of endogenic marl and coeval shelly fauna. Marl accumulation occurred from ~13,500 to ~8,200 cal yrs BP. This study examines controls on marl and shell δ44/42Ca, element ratios (Mg, Fe, and Ba), δ18O, δ13C, and 87Sr/86Sr ratios of marl calcite, shell aragonite, groundwater, and bedrock as proxies for paleolacustrine conditions. Results for Interval A (532.0 to 475.0cm) indicates a cooler, wetter climate, lower primary lake productivity and higher lake levels. Interval B (475.0 to 345.0cm) marks the onset of …

A Diatom Proxy For Seasonality Over The Last Three Millennia At June Lake, Eastern Sierra Nevada (Ca), Laura Caitlin Streib

The Sierra Nevada snowpack is vital to the water supply of California, the world’s sixth largest economy. Though tree ring and instrumental records show the dramatic influence of environmental change on California’s hydroclimate over the last millennium, few proxy archives assess winter precipitation variability farther back in time. Here, we use diatoms from a ~3,200 yr. old sediment core to reconstruct the paleolimnology of June Lake, a hydrologically closed glacial lake in the eastern Sierra Nevada. The Marian Watershed Stewardship Program (MWSP), a community-driven aquatic ecosystem monitoring program, was developed by the Tłı̨chǫ Government to address concerns regarding the cumulative impacts of multiple potential stressors. In particular, the MWSP aims to develop methods that will be effective for detecting potential pollution from the proposed cobalt-gold-copper-bismuth NICO mine within Tłı̨chǫ Lands. In collaboration with the MWSP, paleolimnological methods and geochemical normalization are used to establish pre-mine baselines of lake sediment metals concentrations in the Marian River watershed prior to mine development.
