3d Seismic Analysis And Characterization Of A Stacked Turbidite Channel: Niger Delta Complex, Anthony Luna

Master's Theses

A stacked turbidite channel was interpreted from 3D seismic data acquired in the Niger Delta off the west coast of Africa. In offshore environments, such as the Niger Delta, submarine canyons provide a conduit for currents to transport large sediment loads to form stacked turbidites. Turbidite channels are typically convoluted deposits and contain sands that are potential reservoir targets of hydrocarbon exploration. The internal characteristics of these turbidites are often complex and difficult to interpret accurately. This study characterizes the morphology of a stacked turbidite deposit by describing key features that are commonly found in turbidite channels, including: channel sinuosity, …

Studying The Relationship Between Mud/Salt Flat Habitat And Shorebird Abundance At Two Wetland Areas Using Landsat, Dustin Reagan Jul 2013

Studying The Relationship Between Mud/Salt Flat Habitat And Shorebird Abundance At Two Wetland Areas Using Landsat, Dustin Reagan

Master's Theses

The objective of this project was to determine the degree and direction of association between the amount of mud/salt flat area and shorebird abundance during spring and early summer. This study used Landsat 5 to indirectly measure mudflat and salt flat areas at two wetland complexes within Kansas over a period of several years (1991-2008). These measurements were compared to shorebird surveys conducted by several individuals at both Quivira National Wildlife Refuge and Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area. A correlation analysis showed that significant relationships exist between mud/salt flat area and the abundance of certain shorebird species. Correlation coefficients for individual …

Identification And Paleoecology Of Mammoth Teeth From The Vertebrate Paleontology Collection At The Sternberg Museum Of Natural History, Hays, Kansas, Elizabeth Deering Jul 2013

Identification And Paleoecology Of Mammoth Teeth From The Vertebrate Paleontology Collection At The Sternberg Museum Of Natural History, Hays, Kansas, Elizabeth Deering

Master's Theses

Thirty-five mammoth teeth from the Vertebrate Paleontology Collection at the Sternberg Museum of Natural History in Hays, Kansas were examined to determine the species and paleoecological association. Quantitative and qualitative descriptions of tooth length, width, height, enamel thickness, lamellar frequency, condition, shape, and size, were determined. Thirty-four of the teeth were identified as Mammuthus columbi and one was identified as M. jeffersonii, indicating that M. columbi was the dominant mammoth cycles that resulted in cool, mesic, boreal coniferous forests and prairie (steppe) environments throughout the Pleistocene. M. columbi and M. jeffersonii would have thrived in these environments and would have …

The Extent Of Wetland Vegetation And Wetness Change At Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge From 1984-2012 Examined Using Landsat Thematic Mapper And Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus Imagery, Jeremy M. Henning May 2013

The Extent Of Wetland Vegetation And Wetness Change At Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge From 1984-2012 Examined Using Landsat Thematic Mapper And Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus Imagery, Jeremy M. Henning

Master's Theses

Wetlands provide functions such as reducing flooding of surrounding areas and acting as a rest stop for migrating birds. Eufaula National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama has a natural wetland and six artificial wetlands that are differentiated by how they are drained. Remote sensing derived normalized difference vegetation index and normalized difference wetness indexes were used to obtain information about vegetation and wetness at the wetlands from 1984-2011. A correlation analysis was performed to assess the degree of association between vegetation and wetness as a function of management practices. An ANOVA and agglomerative hierarchical clustering were performed to assess the degree …

An Evaluation Of The Source Area For The Former Norges Cleaners Tetrachloroethylene Plume Near Centennial Boulevard And Vine Street, Hays, Ks, Over A 20-Year Span Using Past Data To Estimate The Plume Concentration Reduction, Adam Staab May 2013

An Evaluation Of The Source Area For The Former Norges Cleaners Tetrachloroethylene Plume Near Centennial Boulevard And Vine Street, Hays, Ks, Over A 20-Year Span Using Past Data To Estimate The Plume Concentration Reduction, Adam Staab

Master's Theses

Analyses of monitoring well data from 2001 to 2009 of a perchlorethylene (PCE) pollution plume located in Hays, Kansas were used to assess the current PCE status and to project the plume rate of decline to when remediation will cease or no longer be required. Isoconcentration maps were used to calculate an average rate of concentration reduction. Based on these calculations, I believe the PCE concentration has the potential to be below the 5 μg/L Risk-based Standards for Kansas by 2020 for the study area.

Utilizing A Magnometer To Locate Abandoned Oil Wells In Butler County, Kansas, Christopher D. Neeley May 2013

Utilizing A Magnometer To Locate Abandoned Oil Wells In Butler County, Kansas, Christopher D. Neeley

Master's Theses

Two ground-based magnetometer surveys were conducted on the American Legion Brownfields Targeted Assessment site in El Dorado, Kansas during November 2011, in an attempt to locate two oil and gas wells that were abandoned prior to 1939. The search areas were delineated by Kansas Corporation Commission staff, and prior to the magnetometer surveys, investigated with ground penetrating radar and a metal detector in an unsuccessful attempt to locate casing material or backfilled drilling cellars. The magnetometer surveys yielded several anomalies that were dismissed as cultural noise after the results were compared with field observations. Two anomalies in survey area #1 …
