The Granite Gap area lies in the central part of the Peloncillo Mountains about 28 miles southwest of Lordsburg, New Mexico. Ores of lead, zinc, silver, and tungsten from four separate deposits have been mined there during the past seventy years.

Purpose and Scope of the Investigation:

Several workers, as indicated in the following section, have commented upon the geology of the Flag Pond Quadrangle, but none have mapped or studied the area in detail--nor indeed, much of the adjacent region. Consequently, the purpose of this investigation is to obtain a comprehensive picture of the geology of the quadrangle.

The geology of the quadrangle is divisible into two natural units or parts, each with problems unique unto itself. The first of these units is the crystalline complex, the second is the sedimentary sequence which rests upon the crystalline rocks. The purpose …

The area described in this thesis comprises portions of northeastern Hancock County, Tennessee, and southeastern Lee County, Virginia (Figure 1). It includes parts of the Sneedville and Kyles Ford quadrangles (Tennessee Valley Authority and United States Geological Survey topographic maps 170-SW and 170-SE respectively).

The mapped area, bounded on the southeast by the Hunter Valley fault and on the northwest by Blackwater Valley, is approximately fifty miles west of Bristol, Tennessee-Virginia, and fifty-five miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee. It is about eleven miles long and three miles wide and encloses approximately thirty-three square miles.

The Precambrian metamorphosis rocks of the Tijeras Canyon area crop out along a five-mile, northeast-trending belt, which lies approximately five miles east of the Sandia Mountains front, in north-central New Mexico. The sequence, to the east, is overlain uncomfortably by Pennsylvanian Madera limestone, while the trace of the Tijeras fault marks the western side.

The segment of the South Fork thrust in the Belknap ranch area contains rocks representative of the Upper Jurassic, Lower Cretaceous and Upper Cretaceous. The thrust plate occupies 75 percent of the mapped area. Approximately 3,500 feet of predominantly marine rocks comprise the detachment thrust and about 15 percent of the exposed rocks of the thrust plate is sandstone and conglomerate. All the rock units present in the thrust plate crop out beyond the edge of the over-riding mass except the Sundance and Morrison formations. Lithogenesis Of The Pennsylvanian Madera Formation Of Palomas Peak, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico., Ronald D. Perkins

The Pennsylvanian Madera formation of Palomas Peak in the Sandia Mountains of central New Mexico is a sequence of marine limestone and minor sandstone that ranges in age from Desmoinesian to Virgilian. The limestone is predominantly clastic or bioclastic and the sandstone is arkosic. Lithologic and paleontologic evidence suggests an epineritic to infraneritic environment on a gently subsiding shelf during deposition of the Madera Sediments.

Rhythmic deposition at Palomas Peak is evidenced by alternating clastic and bioclastic limestones which may have resulted from: (1) eustatic changes in sea level, (2) tectonic fluctuations in the downwarping of the shelf, or (3) …

Bear Lake Valley is located in southeastern Idaho and northeastern Utah. It is an elongate valley extending from the vicinity of Laketown, Utah, in the Randolph quadrangle, to the vicinity of Georgetown, Idaho, in the Montpelier quadrangle. The southern part of the valley is occupied by Bear Lake. The essentially straight-sided valley is bounded on the northeast by the Preuss Range, on the southeast by the Bear Lake Plateau, and on the west by the Bear River Range.

This thesis deals with the study of the genesis of the Krueger zinc deposit and the near-by barite deposits of the Potosi quadrangle, Washington County, Missouri.

The rocks outcropping in the quadrangle embrace Pre-Cambrian and Lower Paleozoic formations, the Potosi and Eminence being the most important formations with regard to the studied deposits.

The few structures present in the area of the vertical type and are more abundant in the southern part of the quadrangle.

Special emphasis is placed on the relationships between the barite, the associated sulfides, and the host rock.

"This thesis offers a cross/section through some principal fossilization processes involving organic matter (animals and plants) during and after sedimentation. The influence of different environments during fossilization is considered. The chemical composition of some classes of living invertebrates and plants is compared with the chemical composition of same organisms as found in consolidated sediments as fossils.

Some literature on carbonates, oxides, silicates, phosphates, and sulphides in fossils is reviewed with particular attention to those instances where the fossils are associated with ore minerals. "Copper has been known to occur in Shannon County, Missouri since the early 1830's. A number of small deposits in an area around Eminence has been worked intermittently up to the present day. Little detailed geologic information is available on these deposits. The geology of the Eminence region consists of Precambrian rhyolite porphyry knobs projecting through dolomites and sandstones of Upper Cambrian and Ordovician age. A conglomerate of limited horizontal extent overlying the Precambrian is found at certain localities within the region. The only structures noted are the structural highs formed where the Paleozoic sediments lap upon the knobs. The …

"A geological investigation of the northeast portion of Des Arc Quadrangle in southeast Missouri was completed during the summer of 1958. Exposed Precambrian rocks include, from oldest to youngest, undifferentiated purple rhyolites with an interlayered tile-red rhyolite, andesine basalts with interlayered tuff, and an andesite. A diabase dike intrudes the lower purple rhyolites. The purple rhyolites account for about ninety-seven percent of the Precambrian exposures. Exposed Paleozoic rocks belong to the Bonneterre formation and include three members: (1) Lower Brown dolomite; (2) Light Gray dolomite with Tom Sauk limestone and arkosic sandstone and conglomerate facies; and (3) Upper Brown dolomite. …

"This thesis deals with the geology of the Diamond No. 2 Mine east of Gallup, New Mexico. The sedimentary rocks ranging from Triassic to Cretaceous are described in relation to the local stratigraphic setting.

The Dakota formation is the host rock of the ore deposit, and was therefore studied in detail with regard to its petrographic nature and the sedimentary structures such as slumping. Special emphasis is placed on the study of the relationships between the uranium and vanadium deposit and the host rock.
