Prograde Metamorphism And Upper-Crustal Cooling In The Northern Panamint Range, California: New Insights Into The Jurassic And Mid-Cretaceous Evolution Of The Southern Sevier Fold-Thrust Belt, Elijah A. Turner

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Jurassic-Cretaceous southern Sevier fold-thrust belt, which experiences changes in orientation and structural style as it approaches intersection with the Mesozoic continental arc, has been pervasively overprinted by Neogene-Quaternary faulting, rendering its evolution enigmatic. Raman spectroscopy of carbonaceous material (RSCM) thermometry data from 14 samples and zircon (U-Th)/He (ZHe) thermochronology data from 23 samples collected in the northern Panamint Range illuminate the history of metamorphism and upper-crustal cooling associated with this belt of shortening structures. Best estimate peak temperatures derived from RSCM thermometry increase from 166 ± 19°C at 2.5 km structural depth (measured from the top of the exposed …

Assessing A Potential Paleothermal Anomaly Near A Salt Wall Using (U-Th)/He Thermochronology And Silica Cementation Analysis, Onion Creek, Utah, Richard Gregory Ness Dec 2016

Assessing A Potential Paleothermal Anomaly Near A Salt Wall Using (U-Th)/He Thermochronology And Silica Cementation Analysis, Onion Creek, Utah, Richard Gregory Ness

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Onion Creek salt wall in Fisher Valley, Utah is an exposed salt structure that lies adjacent to sandstones of the Permian age Cutler Group. The thermal conductivity of salt is two to four times greater than other sedimentary rocks and has been shown to act as a regional conduit for heat flow which has implications for petroleum systems in hydrocarbon exploration. Numerical models predict that thermal anomalies should extend 1.5 times the radius of a salt structure into adjacent strata. I hypothesized that an elevated paleothermal anomaly exists in sandstones of the Cutler Group where they are located near …

(U-Th)/He Studies Of The Southern Snake Range Metamorphic Core Complex, Nv And Gypsum Valley Salt Wall, Paradox Basin, Co, Usa, Sarah Lynn Evans May 2016

(U-Th)/He Studies Of The Southern Snake Range Metamorphic Core Complex, Nv And Gypsum Valley Salt Wall, Paradox Basin, Co, Usa, Sarah Lynn Evans

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation presents three studies that investigate extension in the Southern Snake Range (SSR) metamorphic core complex (MCC) of east-central Nevada and a thermal anomaly associated with the Gypsum Valley salt wall (GVSW) of southwestern Colorado. Low temperature thermochronologic studies using the (U-Th)/He system have been applied in numerous geologic settings to understand erosional and tectonic denudation processes. Two of the studies presented use (U-Th)/He thermochronology, combined with other techniques, to investigate the extensional history of the SSR and the extent of the GVSW thermal anomaly. Both of these studies present novel methods for understanding the thermal histories of the …

The Application Of Zircon (U-Th)/He Thermochronology To Determine The Timing And Slip Rate On The Willard Thrust, Sevier Fold And Thrust Belt, Northern Utah, Bryan Eleogram May 2014

The Application Of Zircon (U-Th)/He Thermochronology To Determine The Timing And Slip Rate On The Willard Thrust, Sevier Fold And Thrust Belt, Northern Utah, Bryan Eleogram

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Although the Sevier fold-thrust belt is one of the best-studied foreland systems in the world, timing of motion on the dominant western thrust sheets that carry thick Neoproterozoic to Paleozoic strata remains incompletely understood. Zircon (U-Th)/He thermochrometry (ZHe) studies of the hanging wall of the Willard thrust sheet (WTS) in northern Utah are used to constrain the timing and rate of thrust slip. Previous interpretations of the age of initial slip on the Willard thrust vary widely from 150 to 115 Ma, reflecting ambiguous relations with foreland basin strata and limited geochronologic data. The large displacement on the Willard thrust …

Application Of (U-Th)/He And 40ar/39ar Thermochronology To The Age Of Thrust Faulting In The Sevier Orogenic Belt, Michael Giallorenzo

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The Sevier fold-thrust belt of the Cordilleran orogen in the western United States is a well-studied geologic province, yet our understanding of the history of thrust faulting is still far from complete. Thermochronological methods are applied to major thrust systems from two distinct sections of the Sevier fold-thrust belt (SFTB): the Wheeler Pass thrust in the Mojave Desert section of the southern SFTB, and the Willard thrust in the Idaho-Utah-Wyoming section of the SFTB. The new thermochronological data greatly improve our understanding of the structural evolution of this extensive geologic province.

The zircon (U-Th)/He (ZHe) system records thrust-induced uplift and …
