"A study of the mineralogy of the Grassy Creek and Saverton formations of Northeast Missouri was undertaken to determine whether a division is justified, as proposed by some stratigraphers, of these argillaceous beds into two formations. The formations were sampled systematically at surface exposures on the northeast limb of the Lincoln Arch in the vicinity of Hannibal and Louisiana, Missouri. The samples were investigated mineralogically in the laboratory. Previous studies showed that the fossils of the Grassy Creek and Saverton beds were virtually identical.
