The Effects Of The 2001-2002 Drought On Maine Surface Water Supplies, Catherine Schmitt Mar 2014

The Effects Of The 2001-2002 Drought On Maine Surface Water Supplies, Catherine Schmitt

Catherine Schmitt

Maine lakes and streams serve as significant sources of public water supply, serving 40% of the population. Drought affects surface water resources by reducing water quantity and altering water quality, for example by reducing inputs of materials from the watershed and increasing water residence times. The 2001-2002 drought was the worst in Maine in over thirty years, and it exposed deficiencies in current water resources planning and management. In this study, I evaluated the effects of the 2001-2002 drought on Maine public water systems in order to identify characteristics of systems vulnerable to drought and determine appropriate indicators of drought …

Occurrence Of Sulfonamide Antimicrobials In Private Water Wells In Washington County, Idaho, Usa, Angela Batt, Daniel Snow, Diana Aga

Daniel D Snow

County (Weiser, Idaho) were collected to assess the impact of a nearby confined animal feeding operation (CAFO) on the quality of the local groundwater. All six samples were found contaminated by two veterinary antimicrobials, sulfamethazine (at concentrations from 0.076 to 0.22 μg/l) and sulfadimethoxine (at concentrations from 0.046 to 0.068 μg/l). These groundwater samples also contained elevated concentrations of nitrate and ammonium. Three of the sampled wells have nitrate levels that exceeded the maximum contaminant level set by the US Environmental Protection Agency for drinking water, with nitrate concentration as high as 39.1 mg/l. All but one well showed nitrate, …

Remediation Technologies For Heavy Metal Contaminated Groundwater, Mohd Ali Hashim Dr, Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr, Jaya Narayan Sahu Dr, Bhaskar Sen Gupta Dr Jan 2011

Remediation Technologies For Heavy Metal Contaminated Groundwater, Mohd Ali Hashim Dr, Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr, Jaya Narayan Sahu Dr, Bhaskar Sen Gupta Dr

Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr

The contamination of groundwater by heavy metal, originating either from natural soil sources or from anthropogenic sources is a matter of utmost concern to the public health. Remediation of contaminated groundwater is of highest priority since billions of people all over the world use it for drinking purpose. In this paper, thirty five approaches for groundwater treatment have been reviewed and classified under three large categories viz chemical, biochemical/biological/biosorption and physico-chemical treatment processes. Comparison tables have been provided at the end of each process for a better understanding of each category. Selection of a suitable technology for contamination remediation at …
