Distribution Of Copper And Zinc In Oysters And Sediments From Three Coastal-Plain Estuaries., R. J. Huggett, F. A. Cross, M. E. Bender
VIMS Books and Book Chapters
Copper and zinc were analyzed in oysters (Crassostrea virginica) from the Newport River estuary, North Carolina, and the Rappahannock River estuary, Virginia. Results indicated that a concentration gradient existed, higher concentrations of metals being found in animals living in fresher waters as was shown previously for oysters in the James, York, and Rappahannock estuaries in Virginia. Absorbed, precipitatcd-coprecipitated, and organic fractions of copper and zinc in the <63-μm portion of the sediments from the Rappahannock and York rivers and estuaries were estimated from collections made in January 1972 and June 1973. These sediment data are discussed for both estuarine systems and are compared with metal concentrations in oysters. These comparisons indicated that the concentration gradient found in oysters does not appear to be related to the distribution of copper and zinc in the sediments. Alternative explanations for the inverse relationships between concentrations of copper and zinc in oysters and salinity arc given.

Tidal Discharge Asymmetry In A Salt Marsh Drainage System, John D. Boon
Tidal Discharge Asymmetry In A Salt Marsh Drainage System, John D. Boon
VIMS Articles
Tidal discharge and area‐averaged current speed were measured over complete tidal cycles at the entrance to a salt marsh drainage system near Wachapreague, Virginia. A pronounced asymmetry in curves of discharge and current speed through time was observed which can be simulated by a model incorporating semidiurnal tides and “overtides” in conjunction with marsh and channel storage relationships. As a persistent feature in marsh channel flow relationships, the asymmetry, along with an apparent difference in flood and ebb maxima, may have a systematic, long term influence on the net transport of suspended matter entering and leaving natural marshes.

Thermal Plume Entrainment Of Ichthyoplankton At The Vepco Surry Nuclear Power Station : Progress Report, October 1975, John V. Merriner, A. Deane Estes
Reports
Plume entrainment studies at Vepco Nuclear Power Plant located near Surry, Virginia were initiated in August, 1975 by the Ichthyology department of Virginia Institute of Marine Science. The program was undertaken to define the amount and kinds of fish eggs and larvae that are. present in the Cobham Bay area of the James River and become entrained by the heated effluent.

Reconnaissance Survey Of Benthic Communities Of A Potential Borrow Site Off Tangier Island, Virginia : Report To Virginia Airports Authority, Robert J. Orth, Donald F. Boesch
Reports
The Virginia Institute of Marine Science was called on to render advice and services to the Virginia Airports Authority concerning the environmental impact and design of an extension of the runway of the airport on Tangier Island, Virginia. The southern end of the present runway is now being threatened by the erosion due to the rapid retreat of the western shore of Tangier Island (Fig. 1). Extending the runway would require the stabilization of the shoreline in the vicinity of the runway and filling a tract of subaqueous bottom.

Shoreline Situation Report, Middlesex County, Virginia, Natalie J. Whitcomb, Martha A. Patton, Margaret H. Peoples, Gary L. Anderson, Carl H. Hobbs Ill
Reports
It is the objective of this report to supply an assessment, and at least a partial integration, of those important shoreland parameters and characteristics which will aid the planners and the managers of the shorelands in making the best decisions for the utilization of this limited and very valuable resource. The report gives particular attention to the problem of shore erosion and to recommendations concerning the alleviation of the impact of this problem. In addition we 'have tried to include in our assessment some of the potential uses of the shoreline, particularly with respect to recreational use, since such information …

A Chemical And Biological Survey Of The Lower Potomac River In The Vicinity Of Piney Point, Maryland, Robert J. Huggett, Robert W. Virnstein, Donald F. Boesch
Reports
This report presents the results of a survey of benthic organisms in the lower Potomac River estuary in the vicinity of Steuart Petroleum Company's facilities at Piney Point, Maryland (Fig. 1). This survey was conducted to provide baseline data for the assessment of impact of the expansion of pier facilities at Steuart Petroleum. The environmental impact assessment is being made by Enviro Plan, Inc.

Literature Survey Of Previous Work, Virginia Beach Coastal Compartment, Southeastern Virginia, Victor Goldsmith
Reports
This literature survey of previous work is part of a study of beach changes involving monthly measurements at 18 beach profile locations (Fig. l) . This report consists of two major sections. The first section (3.0) surveys the regional geological and coastal literature and the second section (4.0) surveys in more detail the specific literature relating directly to beach processes of the Virginia Beach Coastal Compartment.
A Hydrographical And Water Quality Study During The Construction Of Second Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Bruce J. Neilson, C. S. Fang
A Hydrographical And Water Quality Study During The Construction Of Second Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Bruce J. Neilson, C. S. Fang
Reports
In 1972 studies were conducted to determine the environmental impact of a third crossing of Hampton Roads, a bridge-tunnel connection designated as part of Interstate Highway 664. At the same time, construction had begun for a second bridge and tunnel to parallel the existing Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel which was to be incorporated into the Interstate system as I-64. Because this project was only in the initial stages, it was recommended that an evaluation of I-64 be made in order to make recommendations for the design of and construction methods for the I-664 bridge-tunnel. This study deals with the water quality …

Chesapeake Bay Bibliography - Volume Iii. Maryland Waters, Jane F. Stauble, Douglas H. Wood
Reports
The Chesapeake Bay Bibliography was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science in response to growing resource management problems of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. With these problems came the realization that planning and management of such a great natural resource is an overwhelming task requiring the best available information. This bibliography, therefore, was undertaken to document existing sources of information, to help identify research and data gathering needs, and to develop a comprehensive research and information services programs for individuals interested in research on, and management of the natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay region.

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1974 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall
Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1974 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall
Reports
Oyster setting levels in m9st Virginia river systems are still far below those which commonly occurred prior to 1960. However, the 1974 season showed continuing improvement since 1972 when Tropical Storm Agnes raged through the Chesapeake Bay region, creating adverse environmental conditions which were largely responsible for the lowest setting levels on record. Data for 1973, as well as for 1971 and 1972 are included in this summary for comparison with the 1974 setting season. Setting information is obtained through surveys conducted weekly by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) from June through early October, with assistance of personnel …
