As a contribution to the Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project, this report provides an introduction to current American Indian interests in the northern intermontane region of western North America and assesses the prospects of tribes pursuing those interests into the 21st century. A primary goal of the Federal interagency project is to develop scientifically sound and ecosystem-based management strategies for forest and range lands under stewardship of the Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management in the greater Pacific Northwest (Fig. 1).
