Lesson Plan - Land Use Game: Complex Decisions, Center For Urban Resilience
Lesson Plan - Land Use Game: Complex Decisions, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 02: Land Use
The purpose of this lesson is for students to simulate decisions that may influence land use patterns in a city. To do this, the students will play a board game that has both mandated Policy Event cards and decision cards that students control. The decision cards consist of three potential options and each option has different monetary, ecological, and social consequences. The students play the game in groups of two to three and then discuss the impacts of their decisions on the future of their city. The lesson concludes with a discussion of how well the data collection went and …

Lesson Plan - Biophysical And Social Drivers, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 02: Land Use
In this lesson, students will learn about the various biophysical and social drivers which impact land use in detail. They will then use their knowledge about urban land use as a class to explore various data sources (maps, charts, figures, etc.) to determine how these drivers have influenced land use in New Orleans. Students will then relate their understanding of the case study to the Ecological Services Model.

Lesson Plan - Urban Sprawl, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 02: Land Use
The purpose of this lesson is for students to explore urban sprawl. They will first analyze urban growth patterns at the national level and then compare the density changes associated with various urban areas in the United States. Finally, they will research information about their own metropolitan area to conclude if it is currently contributing to urban sprawl and suggest how land use policies may have contributed to its current state.
