Unconventional Gas Development: Why A Regional Community Said No, Hanabeth Luke, David Lloyd, William Boyd, Kristin Den Exter Oct 2014

Unconventional Gas Development: Why A Regional Community Said No, Hanabeth Luke, David Lloyd, William Boyd, Kristin Den Exter

Dr Kristin den Exter

Public concern resulting from unconventional coal seam gas (CSG) exploration and production has become a contentious planning issue in regional Australia, with public concern drawing attention to government planning obligations. To assist Lismore City Council (Northern New South Wales) in its deliberations on the topic, a referendum-style poll on the issue of CSG industry development was held in conjunction with the local government elections of September 2012. The poll question, ‘Do you support CSG exploration and production in the Lismore City Council area?’, elicited a poll response rate of 97% of eligible voters, of which 87% voted ‘no’. This paper …

Effects Of Environmental Factors On Dimethylated Sulfur Compounds And Their Potential Role In The Antioxidant System Of The Coral Holobiont, Elisabeth Deschaseaux, Graham Jones, Myrna Deseo, Kellie Shepherd, R Kiene, H Swan, Peter Harrison, Bradley Eyre Jun 2014

Effects Of Environmental Factors On Dimethylated Sulfur Compounds And Their Potential Role In The Antioxidant System Of The Coral Holobiont, Elisabeth Deschaseaux, Graham Jones, Myrna Deseo, Kellie Shepherd, R Kiene, H Swan, Peter Harrison, Bradley Eyre

Dr Myrna A Deseo

Biogenic dimethylsulfide (DMS) and its main precursors, dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) and dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), are potential scavengers of reactive oxygen species in marine algae, and these dimethylated sulfur compounds (DSC) could take part in the algal antioxidant system. In this study, a link between the DSC production and the antioxidant capacity (AOC) of Acropora aspera reef coral was investigated under a range of environmental factors (temperature, light, salinity, and air exposure) that can lead to oxidative stress in the coral holobiont. Enhanced DMS(P)(O) production occurred under experimental conditions, indicating that DSC are potential biomarkers of stress level in coral tissue. Differences in …

Lead In Green Turf, Shawn Gerstenberger Mar 2014

Lead In Green Turf, Shawn Gerstenberger

Shawn Gerstenberger

Green turf. You see it everywhere: football fields, day care centers, parks.... But is it safe? A UNLV professor says it can release lead, which people could inhale or ingest. But the Synthetic Turf Council says no one has reported bad effects. How safe is the turf we play on? How can we change it? The research professor breaks down the green turf situation for us.

Evaluation Of Chlorine Emission Potential At The New Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, Somnath Basu, Kenneth Shilinsky, Irvine Wei Jan 2014

Evaluation Of Chlorine Emission Potential At The New Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, Somnath Basu, Kenneth Shilinsky, Irvine Wei

Irvine W. Wei

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is currently constructing a 1,200 million gallon per day secondary wastewater treatment facility on Deer Island, in Boston Harbor. Chlorine, in the form of sodium hypochlorite solution, is purchased and barged to Deer Island for use in both effluent disinfection and odor scrubbing. The Process Engineering Department of Deer Island, as part of its on-going cost effectiveness program, is currently evaluating on-site generation of sodium hypochlorite. The technical analysis includes a thorough examination of the chemistry of production and storage, including potential losses to atmosphere. This paper presents an overview of that examination, defines …

Developing The Lismore Csg Poll- A University/Local Government Collaboration, Hanabeth Luke, Kristin Den Exter, William Boyd, David Lloyd, Ben Roche Jan 2014

Developing The Lismore Csg Poll- A University/Local Government Collaboration, Hanabeth Luke, Kristin Den Exter, William Boyd, David Lloyd, Ben Roche

Dr Kristin den Exter

Regional universities can contribute to the capacity of regional governance by providing an important source of specialist knowledge that can be used to aid problem-solving and engage communities more actively in decision-making. This paper reports a case of a partnership between a regional university and a local government authority (LGA), in a situation where the local government authority chose to run a referendum-style poll on a regionally important environmental and industrial issue; the development of the coal seam gas industry in a rural area. The partnership was adopted to produce an independently developed question for the poll. The poll question …
