Population Access To Waste Collection Services: Urban Vs Rural Areas In Romania,, Florin C. Mihai Nov 2012

Population Access To Waste Collection Services: Urban Vs Rural Areas In Romania,, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

This paper aims a comparative analysis at county level concerning urban and rural population access to sanitation services in the context of EU accession. Partially coverage of population to such services contributes to illegal dumping of waste generated and uncollected.Furthermore, waste management facilities are inappropriate, particularly in small cities or rural areas. Comparative analysis of urban vs. rural population served by waste collection services using thematic cartography highlights on the one hand the existing disparities within a county and on the other hand reflects the regional disparities across Romania. The demographic, socioeconomic and geographic differentiations between urban and rural areas amplify …

Improper Household Waste Disposal In Rural Territory.Case Study: Neamt County, Florin C. Mihai Nov 2012

Improper Household Waste Disposal In Rural Territory.Case Study: Neamt County, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

Open dumping of waste generated and uncollected is the most common option in waste management schemes from rural areas. Lack of sanitation services or rudimentary waste management systems favored this practice. This paper proposes a method to estimate the amounts of household waste uncontrolled disposed at local administrative unit level (commune) for 2003 and 2010. Based on estimating the amounts of waste generated and uncollected are introduced new indicators in the quantitative analysis taking into account the household waste composition, individual composting of biodegradable waste or recyclable waste from households for a more proper assessment of waste disposed. Usually household …

Appropriate Climate Change Solutions: Towards Sustainable Bioenergy Agro-Production In Africa For Energy Equality And Poverty Alleviation, Ian Duvenage, Ros Taplin, Lindsay C. Stringer Oct 2012

Appropriate Climate Change Solutions: Towards Sustainable Bioenergy Agro-Production In Africa For Energy Equality And Poverty Alleviation, Ian Duvenage, Ros Taplin, Lindsay C. Stringer

Roslyn Taplin

Limited energy access within developing nations particularly in Africa is a primary reason for poverty. Biofuel production has been advocated by many experts as a solution to meeting the energy needs of African countries while reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Others argue that biofuel production will compete with land needed for food production. However it appears many African countries have available land beyond food needs, hence biofuel production may be an option for poor farmers to gain skills, create economic diversification and provide affordable energy without environmental degradation. This paper reviews the situation in Africa with regard to biofuels and …

Geography Of Waste As A New Approach In Waste Management Study,, Florin C. Mihai Sep 2012

Geography Of Waste As A New Approach In Waste Management Study,, Florin C. Mihai

Florin C MIHAI

Municipal waste management in the last two decades has become a global environmental priority in the context of increasing amounts of waste generated due to the development of a mass consumer society. Various issues of waste management , territorial and temporal variability, spatial analysis of treatment or disposal facilities, systemic implications on the environment, the harmonization of international policy at national, regional and local level are solid arguments for studying this field by geography. Mostly technical or economic studies, lacking a vision of territory are supplemented in the conceptual and methodological level by geographers. This paper performed on the one …

Local Governments’ Risk-Based Approach To Climate Change Adaptation: A Missed Opportunity For Resilience In New South Wales, Nadine E. White Aug 2012

Local Governments’ Risk-Based Approach To Climate Change Adaptation: A Missed Opportunity For Resilience In New South Wales, Nadine E. White

Nadine E White

Parts of New South Wales (NSW) have experienced warming of 1.5 to 2.0 degrees Celsius in the period 1960 to 2009, indicating that the impacts of climate change are already being felt. Immediate, effective adaptation to potential impacts is crucial in reducing vulnerability to climate change. All three levels of government in Australia have a role in adaptation planning however it is local government that is at the ‘coal face’ of the outcomes of imminent climatic changes. This empirical research seeks to discover whether the existing institutional and cultural environment of local governments in NSW facilitates or impedes effective adaptation. …

A High-Resolution, Multi-Channel, Over-Sea-Ice Seismic Reflection Survey Over The Mackay Sea Valley, Granite Harbor, Antarctica, B. Williams, Marvin Speece, Ross Powell

M. A Speece

In the austral summer of 2007, 20.5 km of high-resolution over-sea-ice seismic reflection data were collected in the Granite Harbor region of southern McMurdo Sound over the Mackay Sea Valley. The goal of the survey was to image thin pelagic sediment deposited in the Mackay Sea Valley after the Last Glacial Maximum. A generator–injector air gun was lowered beneath the sea ice through holes drilled by an auger drill system. The recording system was a 60 channel snow streamer with vertically oriented gimbaled geophones spaced 25 m apart. Unique problems in the over-sea-ice seismic reflection survey—noise from the ice column …

Under the framework of the ANDRILL Southern McMurdo Sound (SMS) Project successful downhole experiments were conducted in the 1138.54 metre (m)-deep AND-2A borehole. Wireline logs successfully recorded were: magnetic susceptibility, spectral gamma ray, sonic velocity, borehole televiewer, neutron porosity, density, calliper, geochemistry, temperature and dipmeter. A resistivity tool and its backup both failed to operate, thus resistivity data were not collected. Due to hole conditions, logs were collected in several passes from the total depth at ~1138 metres below sea floor (mbsf) to ~230 mbsf, except for some intervals that were either inaccessible due to bridging or were shielded by …

Using New Tools To Explore Undiscovered Country: Understanding The Stratigraphic And Tectonic History Of Greenhouse To Icehouse Worlds Of Offshore New Harbor, Ross Sea, Antarctica, Stephan Pekar, M. A. Speece, D. M. Harwood, F. Florindo, G. S. Wilson

M. A Speece

The Offshore New Harbor Project will investigate the stratigraphic and tectonic history of westernmost Southern McMurdo Sound. This will be used to address two widely recognized but unresolved issues regarding Antarctica’s history: 1) the mid-Paleogene cryospheric development on Antarctica; and 2) the abrupt climate shift across the Eocene/Oligocene transition. The first step for this project is to collect the requisite seismic and gravity data for identifying future drilling targets for the ANDRILL Program. ANDRILL is a multinational program, with the aim to recover stratigraphic intervals for interpreting Antarctica’s climate and glacial history over the past 50 million years. Offshore New …

Air Pollution Emissions During Baking Of Semi-Finished Graphite Products In A Tunnel Furnace, Marek Bogacki, Robert Oleniacz, Marian Mazur

Robert Oleniacz

The baking of semi-finished graphite products in a tunnel furnace is the source of many air pollutants present in both the gaseous and solid phases. The goal of this study was to assess emission rates into the air of the substances such as: CO, NOx, SO2, H2S, CH4, aliphatic hydrocarbons up to C6, benzene and its homologues (BTEX), total dust and tar substances, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contained in the dust. The research showed a small time-dependence of the emission rates for the majority of the substances analysed, which is, to a large extent, a result of the long …

C60 Oxide As A Key Component Of Aqueous C60 Colloidal Suspensions, Befrika Murdianti, Joshua Damron, Martha Hilburn, Randall Maples, Rangika Hikkaduwa Koralege, Sathish Kuriyavar, Kevin Ausman

Kevin D. Ausman

Stable aqueous fullerene colloidal suspensions (nC60) are demonstrated to rely on the [6,6]-closed epoxide derivative of the fullerene (C60O) for stability. This derivative is present, though often unrecognized, in small quantities in nearly all C60 starting materials due to a reaction with air. The low-yield formation of nC60 from organic solvent solutions results from a preferential partitioning and thus enrichment of C60O in the colloidal particles. This partitioning is significantly retarded in the nC60 synthesis method that does not involve organic solvent solutions: long-term stirring in water. Instead, this method relies on trace levels of ozone in the ambient atmosphere …

Ocena Efektów Modernizacji Systemu Oczyszczania I Ewakuacji Spalin Na Wybranych Przykładach, Robert Oleniacz, Marcelina Groborz, Michał Ożóg

Robert Oleniacz

The paper presents an assessment of changes in air emissions and impacts on air quality resulting from the modernization of flue gas cleaning and evacuation in two Polish coal-fired power plants. These modernizations were associated with the construction of flue gas desulphurisation systems and use for discharging desulphurized gases separate stacks with a height of 120 m. On the basis of analyzes and atmospheric dispersion modeling, it was found that the changes in the effective height of emitters (the apparent point of emission), due to additional reducing of flue gas volume in existing chimneys, caused that important ecological effects of …
