Some Significant Wildlife Strikes To Civil Aircraft In The United States, January 1990 – September 2008, Sandra Wright

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, through an interagency agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration, compiles a database of all reported wildlife strikes to U.S. civil aircraft and to foreign carriers experiencing strikes in the USA. We have compiled over 82,057 strike reports from 1,418 USA airports and 207 foreign airports for January 1990 through December 2007 (7,666 strikes in 2007), but estimate that this represents only about 20% of the strikes that have occurred. The following examples from the database are presented to show the serious impacts that strikes by birds or other wildlife can have on aircraft. These examples, …

Wildlife Strikes To Civil Aircraft In The United States 1990–2007, Richard A. Dolbeer, Sandra E. Wright

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

The Federal Aviation Administration produced this report in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services.
This report presents a summary analysis of data from the FAA’s National Wildlife Strike Database for the 18-year period 1990 through 2007. Unless noted, all totals are for the 17-year period, and percentages are of the total known. Because of the large amount of data, Tables 2 through 17 present 18-year totals only and do not display data for individual years, 1990 through 2007. A sample of significant wildlife strikes to civil aircraft in the USA …

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, through an interagency agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration, compiles a database of all reported wildlife strikes to U.S. civil aircraft and to foreign carriers experiencing strikes in the USA. We have compiled over 66,000 strike reports from 1,528 airports, January1990 through December 2005 (over 7,100 strikes in 2005), but estimate that this represents only about 20% of the strikes that have occurred. The following examples from the database are presented to show the serious impacts that strikes by birds or other wildlife can have on aircraft. These examples, from throughout the USA, demonstrate the …

Bye Bye, Birdies, Cheryl L. Mansfield

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Birds come with the territory at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, which usually doesn't mind when any of the nearby Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge's 310 species of birds swoop through for a visit.

But one particular type of bird is causing concern: vultures. That's why NASA plans to test special radar to track any vultures around Launch Pad 39B during the countdown to liftoff of Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-121.

Safety Precautions For Handling Bird Strike Remains

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

These guidelines are provided for those who routinely collect bird remains from runways or aircraft components for bird strike identification. They are advisory in nature to provide guidance for field biologists and others concerned about highly pathogenic avian influenza. Currently, Avian Influenza (H5N1) has NOT been reported in the United States and we are operating under the following guidelines. These guidelines may be updated periodically.

Advisory Circular: Reporting Wildlife Aircraft Strikes, J.R. White

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

This Advisory Circular (AC) explains the importance of reporting collisions between aircraft and wildlife, more commonly referred to as wildlife strikes. It also examines recent improvements in the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Bird/Other Wildlife Strike Reporting system; how to report a wildlife strike; what happens to the wildlife strike report data; how to access the FAA National Wildlife Aircraft Strike Database; and the FAA’s Feather Identification program.

Certalert: Deer Hazard To Aircraft And Deer Fencing

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Elevated deer populations in the United States represent an increasingly serious threat to both Commercial and General Aviation Aircraft. It is currently estimated that there over 26 million deer in the United States. Because of increasing urbanization and rapidly expanding deer populations, deer are adapting to human environments, especially around airports, where they often find food and shelter. From 1990 to 2004, over 650 deer-aircraft collisions were reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Of these reports, over 500 indicated the aircraft was damaged as a result of the collision.

In light of recent incidents where a Learjet landing at …

The signatory agencies know the risks that aircraft-wildlife strikes pose to safe aviation.

This Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) acknowledges each signatory agency’s respective missions. Through this MOA, the agencies establish procedures necessary to coordinate their missions to more effectively address existing and future environmental conditions contributing to aircraft-wildlife strikes throughout the United States. These efforts are intended to minimize wildlife risks to aviation and human safety, while protecting the Nation’s valuable environmental resources.

Landscaping To Avoid Wildlife Conflicts Jan 2002

Landscaping To Avoid Wildlife Conflicts

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Wild animals contribute to our enjoyment of nature, and many species add aesthetic value to urban and suburban environments. Landscapes are frequently developed to be “environmentally friendly” by providing food and cover for songbirds, waterfowl, squirrels, and other wildlife. Wild animals can, however, damage property or threaten human health and safety. The presence of undesirable species or animal overpopulation often leads to many common wildlife problems associated with urban landscapes. Equipped with the right information, landscape designers can significantly reduce the potential for wildlife–human conflicts and their resulting impacts on economic interests and public safety.

Strike One—You’Re Out! Wildlife Services Helps Reduce Wildlife Conflicts At Airports

Other Bird Strike and Aviation Materials

Collisions between aircraft and wildlife at airports have risen dramatically in recent years as a result of large population increases in many wildlife species, faster airplanes, and the increase in air transportation traffic. Every year between 1991 and 1997, wildlife strikes cost U.S. civil aviation more than $300 million and 500,000 hours of aircraft downtime. About 2,400 bird strikes to civil aircraft are reported each year, and more than 2,500 are reported by the U.S. Air Force. Since 1990, more than 300 deer collisions with aircraft have been reported to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
