The Surat Basin hosts significant coal and coal seam gas resources. New high-precision CA-TIMS U/Pb zircon ages from tuffs and Bayesian age stratigraphic models are combined with palynology from fine-grained sedimentary rocks and zircon trace elements to provide further chronostratigraphic and biostratigraphic constrains on the Walloon Coal Measures in the eastern margin of the Surat Basin and infer the palaeoenvironment and tectonic setting. The tuff ages range from 165.88 ± 0.11 Ma to 158.84 ± 0.05 Ma, with those from the stratigraphically lower Taroom Coal Measures ranging from 165.88 ± 0.11 to 163.05 ± 0.08 Ma and Juandah Coal Measures …

"The unique alignment of the Decaturville, Crooked Creek, and Weaubleau geological structures in central Missouri, three of nine known such structures along the 38th parallel in Illinois, Missouri, and Kansas, has puzzled geoscientists for decades. Research using palynology (palynomorphs and particulate organic matter) and radiometric dating of impact spherules were used to constrain age and a relationship between these enigmatic structures and infer their paleoenvironmental conditions. Novel melting damages, unique to impact, were documented in the palynomorphs in all the three structures. Early Ordovician acritarchs with melted processes correlate with 40Ar-39Ar stepwise heating age of impact spherules …

During the Pleistocene, long-term trends in global climate were controlled by orbital cycles leading to high amplitude glacial-interglacial variability. The history of Amazonian vegetation during this period is largely unknown since no continuous record from the lowland basin extends significantly beyond the last glacial stage. Here we present a paleoenvironmental record spanning the last 1800 kyr based on palynological data, biome reconstructions, and biodiversity metrics from a marine sediment core that preserves a continuous archive of sediments from the Amazon River.

The newly defined Frazer Beach Member of the Moon Island Beach Formation is identified widely across the Sydney Basin in both outcrop and exploration wells. This thin unit was deposited immediately after extinction of the Glossopteris flora (defining the terrestrial end-Permian extinction event). The unit rests conformably on the uppermost Permian coal seam in most places. A distinctive granule-microbreccia bed is locally represented at the base of the member. The unit otherwise consists of dark gray to black siltstone, shale, mudstone and, locally, thin lenses of fine-grained sandstone and tuff. The Hell Creek Formation is known for its abundant vertebrate fossils from the end of the Cretaceous. Its internal stratigraphy is poorly defined and it is therefore difficult to determine the precise stratigraphic location of a paleontological feature. This challenge could be overcome if a consistently appearing easily recognizable time horizon, such as the Chicxulub impact debris, or a well defined formational contact could be identified over a wide area of the Hell Creek Formation exposure, but these have been difficult to establish in some localities. The high volatile C bituminous-rank, Bolsovian-age Princess No. 3 coal, a correlative of the heavily-mined Hazard No. 7 coal and the Peach Orchard and Coalburg Lower Split coals, was investigated three sites at a mine in Greenup County, Kentucky. The coal exhibits a “dulling upwards” trend, with decreasing vitrinite and a greater tendency towards dull clarain and bone lithotypes towards the top of the coal. The relatively vitrinite-rich basal lithotype is marked by a dominance of lycopod tree spores. Dry biomes occupy ~35% of the landscape in the Neotropics, but these are heavily human-disturbed. In spite of their importance, we still do not fully understand their origins and how they are sustained. The Guajira Peninsula in northern Colombia is dominated by dry biomes and has a rich Neogene fossil record. Here, we have analyzed its changes in vegetation and precipitation during the Neogene using a fossil pollen and spore dataset of 20 samples taken from a well and we also dated the stratigraphic sequence using microfossils. The Aurora Subglacial Basin (ASB) contains an estimated 3.5 m of global sea-level equivalent ice volume and is primarily drained by the Totten Glacier system, which terminates at the Sabrina Coast, East Antarctica. Thinning and retreating of the Totten Glacier indicate that this region is highly susceptible to oceanographic and atmospheric warming. The paleoclimate reconstruction of these changes, conducted in the context of this MS thesis, will improve understanding of East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) dynamics in this sensitive system. The Eastern Thrace and Western Black Sea basins provide unique perspectives on the palaeogeographic reconstructions of the Paratethys. Although very thick and extensive Oligocene outcrops and well sections exist in the Thrace Basin, only a few comparable sections are available in the Black Sea onshore areas. In this study, five measured stratigraphic sections of Eocene to Oligocene age from the margins of the Western Black Sea were studied and palynomorph assemblages were identified quantitatively. The sedimentary basins in SW Turkey (e.g., Kale-Tavas, Yatağan, and Ören basins) that developed after the closure of the Neotethys Ocean allow the reconstruction of the tectonic and paleogeographic history of the region. Due to the rich coal reserves, the Yatağan Basin provides a substantial amount of data to infer the paleoenvironment and paleoclimate during the middle Miocene to Pleistocene. Current large-scale deforestation poses a threat to ecosystems globally, and imposes substantial and prolonged changes on the hydrological and carbon cycles. The tropical forests of the Amazon and Indonesia are currently undergoing deforestation with catastrophic ecological consequences but widespread deforestation events have occurred several times in Earth’s history and these provide lessons for the future. The end-Permian mass-extinction event (EPE; ∼252 Ma) provides a global, deep-time analogue for modern deforestation and diversity loss. The palynological analysis of the early Miocene successions of the Kılçak formation (Central Anatoia, Turkey) was carried out in order to reconstruct the palaeovegetation. The pollen spectra indicate a fl ora dominated by Pinus, co-dominance of Cupressaceae in one of the investigated successions, and lower percentages of trees such as Taxodioideae within Cupressaceae, Quercus deciduous type, Carya, Carpinus, Ulmus, Engelhardioideae, Salix, Alnus and Juglans. Herbs are represented by minor amounts of Poaceae, Amaranthaceae/Chenopodiaceae and Asteraceae. In this study, petrographical and palynological analyses of coal samples from two regions (the Kırka region in the south, and the Karacaören region in the north) of the Sinanpaşa (Afyon) Neogene basin were performed. The coal-bearing Neogene sediments indicate the occurrence of fi ve facies: paleosol, matrix-supported conglomerate, coal-bearing mudstone, sandstone-claystone and laminated mudstones. Coal layers are mainly within coal-bearing mudstone facies. In addition, there are various types of coalifi ed materials in matrix-supported conglomerate and sandstone-claystone facies. The results of palaeontological (palynological and mollusc) and sedimentological analyses of the lower Miocene deposits from the Bingöl minibasin, a part of the Sivas Basin, are exhibited to define the vertical shifts in sedimentation environments and plant covers, linking to eustasy. The presence of index species Corbulomya (Lentidium) aquitanica suggests an Aquitanian age for the studied succession, which can be divided into three informal units: a lower unit, a middle unit, and an upper unit. Although the Gulf of Mexico is one of the most studied basins in the world, a majority of the focus has been driven by petroleum exploration and/or on seismic and sedimentological facies models. Rarely has the intent of previous studies been to characterize the Holocene climatic record of coastal Texas. Of those studies that discuss Holocene vegetation change, the majority focus on the Mississippi River Delta, the Edwards Plateau or central Florida, leaving an absence of insight to western Gulf of Mexico climate changes. The McMurdo Dry Valleys, a hyper-arid cold polar desert located within the Transantarctic Mountains was once covered by vegetation. An in depth study of surface samples of various Neogene age, acquired throughout the Valleys, provide insight to the location of one of Antarctica’s last vegetation refugia. Boston University’s Antarctic Research Group has collected 82 surface samples from paleo lake sediments on 14 expeditions spanning 22 years in the McMurdo Dry Valleys. Extensive studies have examined the syn- and post-rift sediments in the South China Sea and surrounding margins, but pre-rift, Eocene deposits are rare. Here we examine organic-walled microfossils from the South China Sea, recovered at Site U1435 of IODP Expedition 349 to provide palynostratigraphic control and characterize the environmental setting before, and in response to, the initiation of seafloor spreading in the basin ~33 Ma. The well preserved palynological assemblage recovered allow dating of sediments sampled at Site U1435. "Five small lakes in southeast Missouri (Frisco, Pine Forest, and Bray Area lakes [Phelps County], and Cypress and Blue ponds [Bollinger County]) were cored for paleolimnological studies. Cores were evaluated for their sedimentology, palynology, and geochemistry. In two of these lakes (Bray Area and Pine Forest lakes) the planktonic algae were also studied in the water column, along with ecological parameters. Algae in the sediments were compared to algae in the water to understand the resistance of different species to decay, and a suggested methodology for this work is described. A sedimentological, stratigraphical and palynological study was conducted on the upper Cretaceous (Campanian) Mesaverde Group over 27.5 km of a north-south-orientated outcrop belt in the northern Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. During the Campanian, the study area lay in the western part of the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. The study aims to provide a stratigraphic and paleoenvironmental analysis of the Mesaverde Group and to integrate findings with data from outcrop belts to the south (southern Bighorn Basin), north (Montana) and east (Powder River Basin).

Multiple NSF (National Science Foundation)-funded MARGINS Source-to-Sink cruises were conducted in the Gulf of Papua (GoP), Papua New Guinea (PNG), from 2003 through 2005 to better understand how sediment is created, transported, and deposited. Although much work has been done on the data collected during these cruises, palynological analysis has never been conducted on the hundreds of available cores. The first phase of this project (Chapters 2 and 3) examines the connection between modern depositional regimes in the GoP and species assemblages recovered. However, Antarctica today is covered with ice and snow leaving less than 1% of the continent inhabited by vegetation. By studying this decline in vegetation and reconstructing past environments, we can gain a better understanding of environmental changes and use this knowledge to predict future changes. They occur in the Late Oligocene Osmancık and Miocene Gazhanedere formations in the Gelibolu peninsula, in the SW part of the Thrace Basin (NW Turkey). This paper focuses on the organic-petrographic composition and depositional conditions of the two coal zones by using coal petrography, including maceral ratios, and palynology. The Eastern Kentucky Coal Field is located in the central portion of the Appalachian Basin. The Pennsylvanian Breathitt Formation in this region is characterized by numerous sequences of bituminous coal-bearing sedimentary rocks. These coals have distinct maceral compositions due to variations in depositional environments. Coal characterization is an important method for determining conditions that influenced peat accumulation and overall depositional settings of mires.

This study focuses on the characterization of the maceral composition of the Middle Pennsylvanian-age Leatherwood coal bed. It utilizes petrographical, palynological, and geochemical analyses to describe specific depositional environments and associated peat accumulation conditions.

Prior to the Late Eocene, the Antarctic continent experienced lush vegetation under temperate conditions. Just before the Eocene/Oligocene Boundary, the climate of the southernmost continent began to deteriorate dramatically. This cooling trend largely continued until most Antarctic vegetation disappeared, ~13.85-12.8 Ma. Classifying the nature and cause of Antarctica’s drastic climate change is essential for furthering our knowledge of Earth’s history, and also for grasping the potential effects of current and future climate shifts. Palynofloras of the Kocaçay and Cumaovası basins in western Turkey that belong to a time-span from the late Early to late Middle Miocene (the late Burdigalian-Serravallian) are studied and compared with published palynofloras of Europe and Turkey. Palynological data and numerical climatic results obtained by the coexistence approach indicate palaeoclimate changed from warm subtropical to temperate during the late Burdigalian-Serravallian. Moreover, the palaeoclimates of the Kocaçay and Cumaovası basins are compared with continental palaeoclimatic records of coal-bearing sediments in western Turkey and current temperatures in the İzmir region. ABSTRACT The Late Cretaceous Ferron-Notom Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale Formation plays a dominant role in oil production in Utah. Although numerous sedimentological and sequence stratigraphic studies have been conducted in recent years on this sequence, palynological analyses had not yet been undertaken. New Contributions to the Knowledge of the Holocene Vegetation History of Rodnei Mountains. Two sequences originating from one peat bog in Poiana Ştiol (Rodnei Mts.) were pollen analyzed. The vegetation history is described since the Atlantic period. In this period the vegetation is dominated by Picea together with Corylus, Ulmus and Alnus viridis. The components frequencies of the Quercetum mixtum (Quercus, Fraxinus, Tilia, Corylus) rarely exceed 10%. The vegetation of the Subboreal period is dominated by the Carpinus and that of the Subatlantic is dominated by Fagus. Picea pollen is well represented belong the entire sequences.

A Late Glacial - Holocene sequence from the Bisoca peat bog (Buzăului Subcarpathians) was studied from palynological point of view. The vegetation history, supported by 12 14C dates is described since the end of the Late Glacial. At the onset of the Holocene Ulmus became established by around 9,700 B.P.; Quercus, Fraxinus, Tilia, Corylus became established almost simultaneously by around 9,500 B.P. The local establishment of Carpinus is about 6,200 B.P. Its maximum occurred since 5,000 B.P. Fagus pollen is regularly recorded since 7,000 B.P. Its absolute dominance took place at about 2,000 B.P.

The Late Cretaceous Umir Formation in Middle Magdalena Valley Basin (MMVB) was recently acknowledged as a new target. However, there is little known about the regional distribution of the Umir Formation since it is affected by structural complexity and a major regional unconformity. To improve biosteering of the Umir Formation and reduce exploratory risks, a detailed biostratigraphic analysis of the Umir Formation in the MMVB is presented. Eighty samples from four cores drilled in the Central Eastern MMVB were analyzed for palynological content. These cores represent 976.6 meters of the Middle to Upper Umir Formation.
