Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

We used a field excursion to the West Clearwater Lake Impact structure as an opportunity to test factors that contribute to the decisions a remote field team (for example, astronauts conducting extravehicular activities (EVA) on planetary surfaces) makes while collecting samples for return to Earth. We found that detailed background on the analytical purpose of the samples, provided to the field team, enables them to identify and collect samples that meet specific analytical objectives. However, such samples are not always identifiable during field reconnaissance activities, and may only be recognized after outcrop characterization and interpretation by crew and/or science team …

Apparent Glacially Induced Structural Controls On Limestone Conduit Development In Ohio Caverns, United States, Adrienne M. Watts, Ira D. Sasowsky

International Journal of Speleology

Rock discontinuities such as bedding planes and joints are important controls on the form that caves take. We examined structural controls on the development of Ohio Caverns. The cave formed in Devonian limestone underlying a small bedrock knob (Mt. Tabor) within the Interior Lowland province, United States. The area has been overridden by continental glaciation multiple times. The bedrock is pervasively fractured, with many curved and wavy near-vertical fractures showing many different orientations. In the case of Ohio Caverns, it appears that the controlling fractures in map view may not be joints sensu stricto, but rather some combination of …

Late Cenozoic Extensional Tectonics In Western Anatolia: Exhumation Of The Menderes Core Complex And Formation Of Related Basins, Gurol Seyitoglu, Veysel Isik

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

The Aegean region (Western Anatolia, Aegean Sea and Greece) is one of the areas of the earth under the effect of extensional tectonics and includes the typical features of core complexes in this type of region. The Menderes Massif in Western Anatolia was exhumed initially as an asymmetric core complex in the Early Miocene due to extension beginning in the Oligocene and then the central Menderes Massif was further exhumed as a symmetric core complex. This article discusses the exhumation mechanisms of the Menderes Massif and development of surrounding sedimentary basins in light of new findings. The proposed model successfully …

Differentiation Processes İn Late Cretaceous Ultrapotassic Volcanics Around Amasya, Fatma Gülmez, Ş. Can Genç

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Late Cretaceous lithologies around Amasya region are represented by Pontide fore-arc basin units which corresponds a volcanoclastic sequence. This sequence has the products of alkaline ultrapotassic magmatism accompanying calcalkaline lavas which are abundant along Pontide arc. The ultrapotassic rocks which are classified as leucitite, minette and trachyte based on their mineralogical composition, occur as dikes, stocks and rarely lava flows as to be comprised by the Late Cretaceous Volcanoclastic Succession (LCVS). Fractional crytallization accompanied by assimilation (AFC) is a low pressure processes able to differentiate ultrapotassic parental melts to various compositions in a continental margin tectonic setting. The trachytes are the …

Late Pleistocene Glaciations And Paleoclimate Of Turkey, Mehmet Akif Sarikaya, Atilla Çi̇ner

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Glaciers respond quickly to climatic changes and thus they are considered to be very accurate indicators of changes in atmospheric conditions. Similarly, the extent of past glaciers gives valuable insights into paleoclimatic changes. For this purpose, we reviewed the paleo-glaciated mountains where cosmogenic surface exposure dating was applied inTurkey. We also evaluated the paleoclimatic results obtained from these studies to provide a regional overview. Twenty-seven mountains in Turkey are high enough to support Quaternary valley glaciers or ice caps. The timing of glaciations was reported mainly by cosmogenic dating of moraines. We re-evaluated the dated sites and recalculated some of …

Geological Heritage And Framework List Of The Geosites In Turkey, Nizamettin Kazanci, Fuat Şaroğlu, Yaşar Suludere

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Geosites and the special type of geosite called geological heritage are tangible materials such as rocks, fossils, minerals, sedimentary sequences, or structures about which there are results and/or documents of significant events in the geological history. A Framework List deciphers the geological events of the past without mentioning the localities or results. Ideally, there is only one Framework List for every country. The Framework List for Turkey proposed by this study includes 85 titles (frame) in 10 categories. The Stratigraphic and Volcanic-Metamorphic-Sedimentary Petrology categories are the richest for the Frameworks; however they two already contain the majority of the geosites …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

At southwest of Gölbafl› (Ankara) there are two different sequences in tectonic contact. The one at the bottom with low-degree metamorphism is represented by phyllite, metabasite, crystallized limestone, schist and quartz porphyry veins. Above them are early Carboniferous-late Permian neritic and pelagic carbonates which are unconformably overlain by late Permian clastics and carbonates. Samples collected from neritic carbonates yielded early Carboniferous (Visian-Serpuhovian) to middle Carboniferous (Bashkirian- Moskovian) ages. These carbonates of shallow facies character are overlain by radiolarite-bearing pelagic deposits of middle Carboniferous-Permian age. Fossils from the upper most neritic carbonates gave Kubergandian-Murgabian age. This PermoCarboniferous sequence is unconformably overlain …

First Occurrence Of Lithostrotion (Diphyphyllum) From The Mississippian Redwall Limestone In The Beaver Dam Mountains, Washington County, Utah, Devin M. Mclemore, Jennifer E. Hargrave

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The Paleozoic stratigraphy of the Beaver Dam Mountains of southwestern Utah correlates well with the better known deposits of the Grand Canyon, Arizona. However, a detailed list of the fossil fauna from the Beaver Dam Mountains is lacking. Here we describe a rugose coral from the Mississippian Redwall Limestone from Washington Country, Utah. The rugose coral is highly recrystallized, but identified as Lithostrotion (Diphyphyllum) based on morphology and geographic extent. An analysis was conducted to determine conodont zonation, but proved inconclusive. This is the first documented case of Lithostrotion (Diphyphyllum) from the Beaver Dam Mountains.

Pennsylvanian Stratigraphy Of Douglas County, Kansas: Glacioeustatically Modulated Cyclic Deposition On A Remarkably Smooth Shelf, Anthony W. Walton

The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The Middle and Late Pennsylvanian succession of Kansas consists of two types of cyclothems, lithologic successions that consist of several members that repeat in a particular order. Cyclothems are a few meters to a few tens of meters thick. One type of cyclothem, the Kansas cyclothem, or here the limestone-rich cyclothem, consists of interbeds of limestone and shale, where the amounts of limestone are approximately equal to the amount of shale or dominate the succession. This trip will study one such cyclothem in the Oread Limestone at Stop 3 and possibly another cyclothem at the optional Stop 4. Siliciclastic cyclothems …

Hydrothermal Speleogenesis In Carbonates And Metasomatic Silicites Induced By Subvolcanic Intrusions: A Case Study From The Štiavnické Vrchy Mountains, Slovakia, Pavel Bella, Ľudovít Gaál, Vladimír Šucha, Peter Koděra, Rastislav Milovský

International Journal of Speleology

Several caves of hydrothermal origin in crystalline limestones and metasomatic silicites were investigated in the central zone of the Štiavnica stratovolcano, Štiavnické vrchy Mountains, central Slovakia. Evidence of hydrothermal origin includes irregular spherical cave morphology sculptured by ascending thermal water, occurrence of large calcite crystals and hydrothermal alteration of host rocks, including hydrothermal clays. The early phases of speleogenesis in the crystalline limestone near Sklené Teplice Spa were caused by post-magmatic dissolution linked either to the emplacement of subvolcanic granodiorite intrusions during Late Badenian time or to the spatially associated Late Sarmatian epithermal system. Speleogenesis in metasomatic silicites in the …

Cave Monitoring And The Potential For Palaeoclimate Reconstruction From Cueva De Asiul, Cantabria (N. Spain), Andrew C. Smith, Peter M. Wynn, Philip A. Barker, Melanie J. Leng, Steve R. Noble, Andrew Stott

International Journal of Speleology

Palaeoclimate records from northern Iberia are becoming increasingly sought after as this region is one of the most southerly terrestrial locations in Europe to have its climate dictated principally by the North Atlantic. Terrestrial records therefore have the potential to offer insights into changing oceanic and atmospheric circulation in the wider North Atlantic region. Cave speleothems offer one of the most promising archives from northern Iberia due to their wide geographic distribution and potential for accurately dated climate reconstruction. Cueva de Asiul, situated in Cantabria (N. Iberia; 43°19'0.63''N, 3°35'28.32''W; 285 m.a.s.l) within the Matienzo karst depression is one such site …

Cave Development In An Uplifting Fold-And-Thrust Belt Of The Tatra Mountains, Poland, Jacek Szczygieł Oct 2015

Cave Development In An Uplifting Fold-And-Thrust Belt Of The Tatra Mountains, Poland, Jacek Szczygieł

International Journal of Speleology

Detailed structural analysis and geomorphological observations supplemented by the analysis of the distribution of karst conduit directions have been performed in 23 morphologically diverse caves in the Tatra Mountains. Based on these studies, a development scheme of vadose cave passages has been proposed for the most common geological settings in the fold-and-thrust-belt: (1) single-plain faults, (2) multiple fault cores, (3) bedding plane fractures and (4) hinge zones of recumbent folds. Results indicate that the dynamics of the massif (local gravity sliding in the nearby slope zone and regional stress fields), along with the structural pattern, influences the predisposition of structural …

Abstract

This study evaluated commercial olive cultivars for resistance to olive leaf spot (OLS). A growth chamber trial was undertaken with one temperature treatment (16°C) applied during inoculation while a relative humidity (RH) of above 80% was maintained. Plants were kept for 48 hours at 99% RH after inoculation and then moved to shade netted area for disease development at a temperature of 25±5°C. The results were used for categorizing the eight olive cultivars evaluated in this study according to their OLS susceptibility. ‘Frantoio’ was categorized as most tolerant; ‘Nandi’ and ‘Leccino’ were found to be moderately tolerant, and ‘Nocellara …

A New Microenvironment For The Formation Of Clay Minerals: The Example Of Authigenic Halloysite-7Å And Gibbsite In A Stalactite From Agios Georgios Cave, Kilkis, North Greece, Elena Ifandi, Basilios Tsikouras, Dimitrios Papoulis, Konstantin Hatzipanagiotou, Aspasia Antonelou Sep 2015

A New Microenvironment For The Formation Of Clay Minerals: The Example Of Authigenic Halloysite-7Å And Gibbsite In A Stalactite From Agios Georgios Cave, Kilkis, North Greece, Elena Ifandi, Basilios Tsikouras, Dimitrios Papoulis, Konstantin Hatzipanagiotou, Aspasia Antonelou

International Journal of Speleology

An unusual authigenic origin for halloysite and gibbsite is reported in a stalactite from Agios Georgios Cave, Kilkis. This speleothem includes mostly pure calcite whereas minor areas of Mg-rich calcite and scarce dolomite are present in four growth phases. Abundant pores are created due to imperfect coalescence of the calcite crystals. Several of them contain detrital muscovite, which was presumably transferred from the dripping water, during the formation of speleothem and has been variably altered to halloysite. Several pores in the stalactite contain different mineral assemblages that we interpret as in situ: halloysite-7Å, halloysite + silica, gibbsite + silica and …

Speleogenesis Of The Hermannshöhle Cave System (Austria): Constraints From 230Th/U-Dating And Palaeomagnetic Analysis, Lukas Plan, Andrea Schober, Denis Scholz, Christoph Spötl, Petr Pruner, Pavel Bosák

International Journal of Speleology

Hermannshöhle is a show cave located near Kirchberg/Wechsel in Lower Austria. Together with three nearby and genetically connected caves, it forms the Hermannshöhlen cave system (HHS). With a length of 5 km, the HHS is the longest cave in the Lower Austroalpine unit. It is arranged as an extreme three-dimensional maze on a ground area of 200 x 200 x 82 m. Speleothems are abundant in this cave and represent the focus of this study. Low carbon isotope values indicate the presence of a soil-covered catchment above the HHS during times of speleothem deposition. 28 samples were dated by the …

International Journal of Speleology

Kuumbi Cave is one of a group of caves that underlie a flight of marine terraces in Pleistocene limestone in eastern Zanzibar (Indian Ocean). Drawing on the findings of geoarchaeological field survey and archaeological excavation, we discuss the formation and evolution of Kuumbi Cave and its wider littoral landscape. In the later part of the Quaternary (last ca. 250,000 years?), speleogenesis and terrace formation were driven by the interplay between glacioeustatic sea level change and crustal uplift at rates of ca. 0.10-0.20 mm/yr. Two units of backreef/reef limestone were deposited during ‘optimal’ (highest) highstands, tentatively correlated with MIS 7 and …
