Geochemical Provenance Of Clastic Sedimentary Rocks In The Western Cordillera: Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, And Oregon, John Aaron Peterson

Sedimentary rocks are an important source of information about previous orogenic conditions and the composition of which may describe the evolution of provenance and tectonic setting. Many factors influence sediment composition, namely, source rock composition, chemical weathering, climate, transport burial, and diagenesis. As the sediment composition changes through time, the geochemical characteristics of the sediment can be used to understand its geologic history.

The geochemical characteristics of clastic sedimentary rocks are useful in determining the depositional setting and its associated provenance. Although many different studies have used geochemical discriminants to evaluate provenance and tectonic settings, none have used a defined …

Provenance Studies Of Volcanic Clasts From The Santa Fe Group, San Luis Basin, Colorado: A Guide To Tectonic Evolution, Corine Kay Armstrong

Volcanic clasts at the base of the Tertiary Santa Fe Group of the San Luis Basin (SLB), a major extensional feature of the northern Rio Grande Rift, provide evidence for the direction of sediment transport and timing of regional tectonic events. A combination of clast whole rock geochemistry (major and trace element), mineral chemistry (amphibole, biotite, pyroxene and feldspar) and geochronology (40Ar/39Ar of amphibole and biotite and U-Pb of zircons) is used to constrain the possible source scenarios. Provenance Of The Miocene-Pliocene Muddy Creek Formation Near Mesquite, Nevada, Steven Wayne Forrester

The provenance, stratigraphy, and depositional history of the Miocene-Pliocene Muddy Creek Formation (MCF) in southern Nevada are poorly studied and poorly constrained. Previous studies of the MCF have concluded that the formation consists of lacustrine, eolian, and fluvial deposits. Currently the age of deposition is loosely constrained between 8.5 and 4.1 Ma. This study documents the evolution of one portion of the eastern extent of the MCF and determines its provenance and depositional history at Flat Top and Mormon Mesas in Nevada; and near Beaver Dam and Littlefield, Arizona.
