Mineralogical And Geochemical Characteristics Of The Upper Cretaceous And Lower Paleocene Parts Of The Germav Formation: Southeastern Türkiye, Sema Teti̇ker

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The mineralogical and chemical characteristics of Upper Cretaceous-Lower Paleocene claystone sediment samples taken from Mardin and Batman, located in southeastern Türkiye, were analyzed in the present study. The clay mineral paragenesis in the Upper Cretaceous units consisted of chlorite-smectite (C-S) and illite, whereas the Lower Paleocene unit consisted of chlorite-vermiculite (CV) and vermiculite minerals. Analyses conducted on clay samples indicated high levels of Al, Mg, Fe, Cr, V, Ni, and Zr. Low levels of alkali and alkaline earth elements (Mg, Na, Ca, K) in the clay-rich sediments suggest relatively high-grade weathering in the source area. The mineralogical compositions, major elemental …

The Provenance Of Coarse-Grained Turbidite Sandstones In The Kırkgeçit Formation(Western Part Of The Elazığ Basin-East Turkey), Onur Alkaç, Ercan Aksoy

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Modal analysis of sandstones for conglomerate rich marine basins is useful for investigating the provenance types surrounded by plate tectonics. Different kinds of siliciclastic rocks are important indicators for defining the paleogeography and geotectonic conditions of the sedimentary basin by provenance analysis. This paper, which focuses on the petrography and provenance of conglomerate rich turbidite systems, is one of the rarest studies on the sedimentary characteristics in the scientific literature. In this context, the study was carried out in the western part of the Elazığ Basin. The Middle Eocene?Oligocene basin infill called the Kırkgeçit Formation is characterised by the conglomerate …

Geochemistry And Petrography Of Beach Sands Along The Western Coast Of Ghana:Implications For Provenance And Tectonic Settings, Mahamuda Abu, Emmanuel Daanoba Sunkari

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The paleoweathering, provenance, and tectonic setting of sediments of the western coast of Ghana were unraveled using the geochemistry of 29 beach sands, which are characterized by coarse-, medium-, and fine-grained sizes. The coarse-grained beach sands contain higher SiO2 content (2.9-96 wt.%) than the medium-grained (4.9-94 wt.%) and fine-grained (16.1-90.7 wt.%) sands, implying that the increase in grain size is related to the increase in SiO2 content. Al2O3 and CaO concentrations are higher in the fine- and medium-grained sands than the coarse-grained sands. The beach sands are compositionally immature based on the index of compositional variable values (1.17-141) and Th/Sc …

Heavy Minerals And Exotic Pebbles From The Eocene Flysch Deposits Of The Magura Nappe (Outer Western Carpathians, Eastern Slovakia): Their Composition And Implications On The Provenance, Katarína Bónová, Ján Bóna, Martin Kovácik, Tomás Mikus

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The study aims to reconstruct the crystalline parent rock assemblages of the Eocene Strihovce Formation (Krynica Unit) and Mrazovce Member (Raca Unit) deposits, based on the heavy mineral suites, their corrosive features, geochemistry of garnet and tourmaline, zircon cathodoluminescence (CL) images, and exotic pebble composition. Both units are an integral part of the Magura Nappe belonging to the Flysch Belt (Outer Western Carpathians). Corrosion signs observable on heavy minerals point to different burial conditions and/or diverse sources. The compositions of the detrital garnets and tourmalines as well as the CL study of zircons indicate their origin in gneisses, mica schists, …

Triassic-Jurassic Arc Magmatism In The Pontides As Revealed By The U-Pb Detrital Zircon Ages In The Jurassic Sandstones Of Northeastern Turkey, Remzi̇ye Akdoğan, Aral I. Okay, István Dunkl Jan 2018

Triassic-Jurassic Arc Magmatism In The Pontides As Revealed By The U-Pb Detrital Zircon Ages In The Jurassic Sandstones Of Northeastern Turkey, Remzi̇ye Akdoğan, Aral I. Okay, István Dunkl

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Eastern Pontides were located at the southern active margin of Laurasia during Mesozoic time. Jurassic volcaniclastic sediments and volcanic rocks of the Pontides represent products of the arc magmatism above a north-dipping subduction zone. Despite the wide distribution of the Jurassic volcaniclastic/volcanic succession, the precise age of the Jurassic volcaniclastic sequence and that of the synsedimentary magmatism are poorly constrained. Here we present U-Pb detrital zircon ages from two Jurassic sandstones belonging to the Şenköy Formation of the Eastern Pontides. One sample is taken from the base of the Şenköy Formation unconformably overlying the late Carboniferous Gümüşhane granite. The …

Provenance Investigation From Sedimentary Petrography Of The Upper Cretaceous Deepmarine Low Density Turbidites Of The Tanjero Formationaround Arbat, Northeastern Iraq, Hasan Çeli̇k, Tavan Muhammad Hama Sali̇h

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Deep marine low density turbidites of the Upper Cretaceous Tanjero Formation were studied in terms of their petrographic composition to deduce the provenance of the unit around Arbat, northeastern Iraq. Petrographic works based on modal analysis of the clastic rock fragments and released single minerals in silt, fine to coarse grained sandstone, and, in very small quantities, pebbly sandstone show that these turbidites are mainly composed of sedimentary rock fragments such as carbonate, microcrystalline and cryptocrystalline quartz bearing siliceous sedimentary cherts, Radiolaria bearing cherts, and released Radiolaria fossils from the cherts during a short distance transportation. Quartz and feldspar ratios …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Major, trace, and rare earth element (REE) studies have been conducted on the Proterozoic clastic rocks of the Kerur Formation of the Kaladgi-Badami Basin, South India, to determine their paleoweathering conditions and provenance characteristics. Geochemically, these sedimentary rocks are classified as quartz arenite, arkose, litharenite, and sublitharenite. The chemical index of alteration values and the A-CN-K diagram suggest that the clastics rocks in this study underwent moderate to intensive weathering. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns with light REE enrichment, flat heavy REE, and a negative Eu anomaly also attribute felsic source-rock to sedimentary rocks of the Kerur Formation. In addition, Eu/Eu* (~0.77), …

Mineralogy, Geochemistry, And Depositional Environment Of The Beduh Shale(Lower Triassic), Northern Thrust Zone, Iraq, Faraj Tobia, Sirwa Shangola

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Integrated mineralogical and geochemical methods are utilized to investigate the provenance, paleoweathering, and depositional setting of shale from the Lower Triassic Beduh Formation in the Northern Thrust Zone, Iraq. The ~64-m-thick Beduh Formation consists of calcareous shale and marl intercalations with thin calcareous sandstone interbeds. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that clay minerals comprise illite, kaolinite, and chlorite, with a minor mixed layer of illite/smectite and illite/chlorite. Calcite and quartz are the main nonclay species with subordinate amounts of feldspar and hematite. The mineralogical and geochemical parameters of the shale (e.g., high content of illite and moderate illite crystallinity index, Al2O3/TiO2, …

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The Hawkesbury Sandstone is an important groundwater reservoir in the southern part of the Sydney Basin, Australia. However, its diagenesis and provenance and its impact in reservoir quality are virtually unknown. The present study aims to reconstruct the parent rock assemblages of the Hawkesbury Sandstone, their tectonic provenance, and the physiographic conditions under which these sediments were deposited. Samples from the EAW 18a and EDEN 115 field representing the Middle Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone were studied using a combination of petrographic, mineralogical, and geochemical techniques. The Hawkesbury Sandstone is yellowish brown in color, siliceous, and partly calcareous; it originated as sands …

Petrography And Geochemistry Of Pharaonic Sandstone Monuments In Tall San Al Hagr, Al Sharqiya Governorate, Egypt: Implications For Provenance And Tectonic Setting, Samir Mahmoud Zaid, Oussama El Badry, Fatma Ramadan, Mahmoud Mohamed Jan 2015

Petrography And Geochemistry Of Pharaonic Sandstone Monuments In Tall San Al Hagr, Al Sharqiya Governorate, Egypt: Implications For Provenance And Tectonic Setting, Samir Mahmoud Zaid, Oussama El Badry, Fatma Ramadan, Mahmoud Mohamed

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Petrographic and major and trace element compositions of Tanis sandstones from Tall San Al Hagr, Al Sharqiya Governorate, Egypt, have been investigated to determine their source, provenance, intensity of paleoweathering of the source rocks, and tectonic setting. Tanis sandstones are yellowish brown in color, siliceous, partly calcareous, and originated from sands deposited in fluvial channels. Texturally, Tanis sandstones are medium- to very coarse-grained, mature, and moderately sorted. Scarcity of feldspars indicates that the sandstone is extensively recycled from a distant source. Their average modal composition (Q99.75F0.03L0.22) classifies them as quartz arenites (quartzite), which is consistent with the geochemical study. Chemical …

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Akkuyu formation was deposited on marine carbonate platform in Central Tarurids. The organic material of the unit is composed of Type III kerogen which is woody material transported from the land. Late Jurassic- Early Cretaceous is an important period which great anoxic events in deep sea bottom occurred due to the primary organic productivity in global sea surface. Use of several trace elements values (Ni, V, U, Cr, Co, Th) revealed that Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous Akkuyu formation shows oxic, disoxic and anoxic paleoredox conditions. In this period the primary productivity was considerably high. Examination of specimen derived …

Evaluation Of Pgaa Data For Provenance Of Lithic Artifacts, Otis N. Crandell Dec 2011

Evaluation Of Pgaa Data For Provenance Of Lithic Artifacts, Otis N. Crandell

Studia UBB Geologia

The objectives of the study were to determine whether Prompt Gamma Activation Analyses (PGAA) could be successfully used to trace the source(s) of various Neolithic artifacts made of microcrystaline quartz. Two macroscopically identical sources of jasper from central and western Romania were analyzed by PGAA along with five Neolithic artifacts from the Limba site (Alba County). Due to the limited number of trace elements, which can be measured by PGAA, this method when used alone might produce inconclusive results for discriminating between jaspers from different sources. The interpretation of the data may be used for general assessments of provenance involving …
