Global warming scenarios predict increases in temperatures, evaporation and summer rainfall in the northern two-thirds of Australia. Pasture production models can be combined with spatial climate data in a geographic information system to predict net primary production from pastures. We used a pasture-sheep production model for a phalaris-white clover pasture together with interpolated climatic data to predict the outcome of increases in temperature, evaporation and summer rainfall for net primary production (NPP) from pastures in northern NSW. A conceptual model is presented that links the mechanics of bite formation to the characteristics of the sward to explain variation in bite weight, bite area, bite depth and biting rate measured in a series of experiments with hand-constructed swards. Bite area is determined by the behaviour used by the animal to collect and grasp the tillers, and the length and stiffness of the sward, Bite depth is affected by height and the degree of vertical heterogeneity in stiffness. Cutting trials were conducted with lucerne (Medicago sativa) cv. S A Standard under dryland conditions over a period of 8 (1982 to 1989) years at 2 sites, one each in the western (Elsenburg) and southern (Tygerhoek) Cape. The sites differed in soil type and rainfall distribution. Replicated plots were harvested at 3 set frequencies (4·, 6- and 8- weekly). Production was lowest during summer and highest in late spring and increased with decreased harvesting frequency at both sites. The selective grazing logic within the computer simulation model GRAZE was tested to determine if predicted ·results differed appreciably from situations ·where non-selective grazing logic· was used. Results indicated that predictions would_ differ somewhat." Use of a model to investigate the payback to alternative phosphate (P) fertiliser programmes is described. Input for the model is fertiliser history (kg P/ho/year) over 5-15 years. A site fertility index is established by summing discounted P applications. The index is related to relative pasture yield (annual yield/non P limited yield) for a soil type. The economics of P use are evaluated by scaling current gross margin/ha for changes in relative pasture yield and subtracting fertiliser costs. Characteristics of plant strategies (competitive, ruderal and stress-tolerator) in both the established and regenerative phases are summarised. Pasture management can be viewed as the manipulation of competition, stress and disturbance. A mechanistic model which describes the dynamics of dry matter digestibility (DMD) in leaves in a grass sward was developed. The model treats the leaves in the sward canopy as a set of 2 cm-long canopy components, and simulates DMD dynamics in the components from their emergence through aging. Each component has its own initial DMD at emergence, and the DMD decreases as the component ages. The model was parameterized and tested against data from a bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Függe) pasture. This quantitative model predicts changes in the species composition of grazed vegetation. It is based on growth equations for each species represented. The three parameters in each equation represent maximum production rate, maximum standing biomass, and the decline of production rate at high total plant density. A model suitable for predicting intake for grazing or non-grazing dairy cows is presented. The model integrates the potentially intake limiting factors of physical fill, physiological energy demand, wet mass, herbage availability, herbage cover, and grazing time. Integration of these factors with a simple set of linear ration balancing constraints yields a model suitable for predicting supplemental feed requirements as well as potential animal production from a grazed land. The model is semi-theoretical, being descriptive in structure, but containing empirical relationships.

Permanent grasslands are complex ecosystems which respond with a great variability - in terms of specific richness - to soil type and management strategies. Modelling is a valuable tool to explore these relationships. Our work consisted in adapting the Moorepark St Gilles grass growth model (MoSt GG) designed to model Lolium perenne plant functional type (PFT) pastures (PFT A) to a different PFT (Dactylis glomerata, PFT B) through literature-based parametrization. In many semi-arid pastoral systems, landscape processes easily become dysfunctional. Shifts to less functional states may be irreversible, and have long-term consequences for pastoral profitability and social viability of rural communities. Typically, shifts to lower functional states involve a decline in perennial grasses (Hodgkinson, 1994). Here we develop a conceptual basis for modelling the basal area of perennial grasses in a semi-arid grassland and validate the model using data from a 10-year grazing study.

Simulation models are useful tools for grassland management. Among many quantitative and qualitative attributes describing vegetation of grasslands, density of plant population is important because of its close relationship with persistence of grasslands (Hirata, 2004), which in turn is crucial for sustainable agricultural production and/or conservation of the environment, wildlife and recreational resource. Although various models have described grassland vegetation, relatively few models have dealt with plant population density. Grass budgeting is a key management practice on dairy farms to balance grass supply on paddocks with grass demand by the grazing herd. Grass budgets must be pre-emptive to be effective. Temporal decision-making in sheep production systems of the Chilean Patagonia is influenced by forage availability in existing paddocks, which in turn is determined by previous use, localisation, climate and soil. Also, production strategies are evolving, with a trend towards fat lamb production, introduction of new breeds and a reduction in the importance of wool production. The objective of this study was to develop an initial version of a spatial empirical simulation model based on extremely limited information, to predict forage growth and sheep production so that decision-makers can assess alternative production strategies.

Grass growth rates and herbage yields depend on weather conditions, soil characteristics and grassland management and differ from year to year and from site to site. In the past, grass growth has been predicted using both mechanistic and statistical models. The accuracy of mechanistic models is commonly insufficient for practical application, while statistical models generally apply to one test site only (e.g. Han et al., 2003). In this paper a semi-empirical grass growth model is presented which is numerically accurate, but which can be applied to contrasting sites across Ireland at the same time.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the precision and accuracy of the Pampa Corte and National Research Council (2007; NRC) models for predicting forage intake (FI) by sheep. Individual data (n = 213) of observed FI, body weight and chemical composition of consumed diet were taken from fifteen indoor digestibility trials conducted with male sheep housed in metabolic cages and fed only forage ad libitum. Optimising the harvesting time of grass in primary growth is difficult under Finnish climatic conditions, because the digestibility of grass decreases on average by 0.5 percentage units daily. We constructed a model based on cumulative temperature and geographical location which estimates the digestibility of grass. This model is used to produce estimates utilising real time weather information. The estimates are presented as a map, which is revised daily. Farmers have free access to the maps via Internet.

An analysis of the relationship of leaf length (LL) and leaf width (LW) with leaf dry weight (LDW) in Panicum maximum was carried out with the objective of improving estimations of tissue flow in that plant. Data was collected in a mob grazing experiment with 28 days grazing interval sampled the day before grazing in 9 grazing cycles. Regression analysis revealed highly significant effect (P < 0.001) of both LL and LW on LDW. A lack of fit test gave strong evidence of non-linear relationship of LDW with LL (p < 0.05), fitting the model 1 0 LDW = β0LLβ1 , while LW presented a linear relation with LDW. Growth and senescence are very important determinants of grassland productivity and correspond to key features to be considered for grazing management purposes. The present study was carried out at ESALQ, Piracicaba, S.P., Brazil and evaluated growth and senescence as a function of sward surface height. Mathematical models generated revealed that a similar pattern of response occurred as described in the literature for temperate grass species.
