Geophysical Analysis Of The Midcontinent Rift’S Subsurface Structure In Southeastern Nebraska, Patrick Szopinski Mar 2019

Geophysical Analysis Of The Midcontinent Rift’S Subsurface Structure In Southeastern Nebraska, Patrick Szopinski

Honors Theses

The Midcontinent Rift System (MCRS) is a 1.1 billion-year-old failed rift system that spans much of the North American continental interior. The MCRS is exposed at Lake Superior and is buried in the subsurface along its southwest-extending arm through southeastern Nebraska. Due to the presence of buried volcanic rocks, the MCRS has characteristic highly-pronounced potential field anomalies (gravity and magnetic). Despite these large anomalies, not much is known about the subsurface faulting associated with the rift zone in the Midwest. The goal of this project is to attempt to use integrated analysis of collected geophysical data from multiple methods to …

Earthquake Relocation And Focal Mechanism Analysis In The Area Of Rupture Following The Mw = 7.6 September 5 2012 Nicoya Earthquake Costa Rica, Gregory Brenn Jun 2014

Earthquake Relocation And Focal Mechanism Analysis In The Area Of Rupture Following The Mw = 7.6 September 5 2012 Nicoya Earthquake Costa Rica, Gregory Brenn

Honors Theses

As part of a Keck Geology Consortium project on the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, a dense broadband seismic array was installed directly above the rupture zone of the long-anticipated Nicoya September 5th, 2012, Mw= 7.6 earthquake. 5 Nanometrics Trillium compact seismometers and Taurus digitizers were installed, defining a ~200km triangular area with one triangular side oriented parallel to the trench and the apex located ~15km inland from the coast. This seismic network was operating from July 2nd to July 18th, and with this data combined with the permanent stations of the Nicoya broadband network, 254 events were initially located. Comparison …

Geophysical Analysis Of Seasonal Montandon Gravel Ridge Water Table Fluctuation And Moisture Gradient Variation Due To Storm Events, Annie Strader Jan 2010

Geophysical Analysis Of Seasonal Montandon Gravel Ridge Water Table Fluctuation And Moisture Gradient Variation Due To Storm Events, Annie Strader

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research project is to continue exploring the Montandon Long-Term Hydrologic Research Site(LTHR) by using multiple geophysical methods to obtain more accurate and precise information regarding subsurface hydrologic properties of a local gravel ridge, which are important to both the health of surrounding ecosystems and local agriculture. Through using non-invasive geophysical methods such as seismic refraction, Direct Current resistivity and ground penetrating radar (GPR) instead of invasive methods such as boreholedrilling which displace sediment and may alter water flow, data collection is less likely to bias the data itself. In addition to imaging the gravel ridge subsurface, another …
