Heavy Metal Chemistry Of Sediments In Caves Of The Springfield Plateau, Missouri-Arkansas-Oklahoma: A Link To Subterranean Biodiversity, Travis M. Doughty, Aaron W. Johnson
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
We used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) to compare the heavy metal chemistry of sediments in caves in rural and urban areas to the chemistry of sediments from a control cave in a relatively undisturbed watershed in the Springfield (MO) Plateau. Sediment from Smallin Cave near Ozark, MO, the control cave, has the smallest peak sizes for Zn and Mn and a moderately-sized Pb peak. Sediment from the rural cave exhibited larger peaks of Zn and Mn and a smaller Pb peak. Sediment from the urban cave had the largest Zn, Mn and Pb peaks. Interestingly, smaller peak sizes appear to correlate …

U.S. Presidents And Their Geological Thinking, Dan Merriam
U.S. Presidents And Their Geological Thinking, Dan Merriam
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
A number of United States presidents had some experience in geological thought and investigations and keen interests in the environment. The first U.S. president, George Washington, was a land surveyor. Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd U.S. president, was a keen supporter of science and maintained an interest in paleontology, and played a key role in the development of American paleontology. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th U.S. president, was a strong supporter of the national park service and was an influential naturalist.
Herbert Hoover, the 31st U.S. president, was a Stanford University graduate with a degree in geology and mining – a true …

Herbert Hoover: Only An Eye For Gold?, Larry E. Davis
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
Herbert Hoover, 31st President of the United States, was a successful mining engineer and author prior to becoming president. Part of his mining engineering career was spent in the goldfields of Western Australia, where he has become part of the local folklore. Hoover allegedly had an eye for the ladies and fell in love with a barmaid to whom he wrote a love poem.
An Assessment Of The Relationship Between Air Mass Frequency And Extreme Drought In The Midwest United States, Curtis Walker, Erin Potter, Nicholas Esposito, Melissa Godek
An Assessment Of The Relationship Between Air Mass Frequency And Extreme Drought In The Midwest United States, Curtis Walker, Erin Potter, Nicholas Esposito, Melissa Godek
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
The Midwest of the United States is a region extensively utilized for agriculture and livestock production despite great susceptibility to widespread and persistent drought. While the location and duration of droughts are related to dynamic meteorological factors, pinpointing when and where a drought will commence, how long it will persist, and when the drought will end, remains a challenge. This investigation examines significant Midwest drought events from a synoptic meteorological perspective through an assessment of air mass frequency over the past decade. A synoptic approach is useful since air masses characteristically describe multiple weather and climate parameters at the same …

Tools Of The Geology Trade And Their Origin, Dan Merriam, Walter Youngquist
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
Tools of the trade help a geologist in the field to measure, describe, and record data about rocks and their position and spatial relationships. We explore some of the trademark tools of a geologist and the origin of each tool.

Mineralogical Composition Of Diabase And Altered Dolostone From The St. Francois Mountains Near Annapolis, Missouri, Usa, Jessica K. Walter, C. Renee Rohs
Mineralogical Composition Of Diabase And Altered Dolostone From The St. Francois Mountains Near Annapolis, Missouri, Usa, Jessica K. Walter, C. Renee Rohs
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
Dolostones of Cambrian and Ordovician age are found in the St. Francois Mountains on the Ozark Plateau in southeastern Missouri and often lie unconformably over Precambrian basement rocks due to the paleo-topography. In some areas, there is distinct evidence of alteration and mineralization within the dolostones. One such location is found near Annapolis, Missouri where nearly all of the original dolomitic material is replaced with quartz. A diabase dike is in close proximity to the silicified dolostone and may have provided the conduit for fluids during alteration. The purpose of this study was to examine samples from the relatively unaltered …

Extent And Mechanism Of Footwall Shear Adjacent To The Ruby's Inn Thrust Fault, Southern Utah, Skyler B. May, Roger E. Leavitt, John S. Maclean
Extent And Mechanism Of Footwall Shear Adjacent To The Ruby's Inn Thrust Fault, Southern Utah, Skyler B. May, Roger E. Leavitt, John S. Maclean
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
The Ruby’s Inn Thrust, located in the Bryce Canyon region, is an uncharacteristic demonstration of a south-directed shortening episode located near the predominately east-directed contractional structures of the Sevier Orogeny. The Paleocene to Eocene Claron Formation in the footwall of the Ruby’s Inn Thrust contains conjugate shear structures and vertical fault planes with slickensides and slickenlines, indicating complex multidirectional shearing. We determined the north-south extent of a broad shear zone along a traverse immediately west of Bryce Canyon National Park, and shearing intensifies slowly from the main thrust at the northern end of our traverse to a maximum intensity at …

Mary Anning: Princess Of Palaeontology And Geological Lioness, Larry E. Davis
The Compass: Earth Science Journal of Sigma Gamma Epsilon
On April 17, 2005, delegates at the 39th Biennial Convention of the Society of Sigma Gamma Epsilon passed a motion to include Mary Anning as one of the guiding pillars of geology in the Ritual of the Society. Mary Anning, of Lyme Regis, England, was a 19th century collector of fossils who made significant contributions to the growth of British palaeontology. Among her finds was one of the most complete specimens of Ichthyosaurs found in Britain, as well as the discovery of the first British Plesiosaurus and Dimorphodon (pterosaur). Mary Anning also discovered the true nature of coprolites. …
