Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a large class of chemicals and common environmental pollutants. Understanding which PAHs and soil test levels may impact human health is an important aspect of gardening and micro-farming, particularly in urban environments that are at increased risk of soil contamination. Land use histories, such as sites associated with vehicle and industrial emissions, burning, and dumping, can elevate concentrations of PAHs in soils. This fact sheet provides instructions on assessing your site for PAHs that may present health risks to humans, testing the soil, and first steps for interpretation and management.

As an ecosystem driver, downy brome (Bromus tectorum L.) presents obstacles to land rehabilitation efforts, including restoring desirable species cover. Because damaged ecosystems may have crossed both abiotic and biotic thresholds, ecologically-based control strategies may assist with altering successional trajectories and restoring desirable plant species. My thesis research had three objectives: 1) assess soil and vegetation relationships in degraded salt desert ecosystems prior to implementing downy brome control treatments, 2) determine the effects of control treatments on soil properties and resident plant species, and 3) evaluate the relative importance of shrubland soil type, herbicide type, and herbicide rate on seedling …

This glossary helps define terms that have been misused during forest planning. Terms that were developed from research on the influences of timber sales and roads during the summer months have been used inappropriately when referring to winter range, hunting seasons, and other conditions. The glossary is based on the results of an "Elk Management Terminology Workshop" held at the University of Montana's Lubrecht Experimental Forest on April 3-4, 1990.

The historical role of naturally occurring fire in shaping the character of many American landscapes has become an accepted ecological principle. Prior to the coming of the Europeans, natural fires had a major influence in producing a variety of vegetational mosaics. Fire suppression policies of the 20th century, however, significantly changed the evolution of many landscapes compared to what would have occurred had natural fires been allowed to continue. A major concern of forest land managers is the visual impact that activities such as timber harvest, road building, and mining have on the forest landscape. Management of the visual resource is a regular part of planning on National Forests, and many other public and private forest land managers are increasing their efforts to protect and enhance this resource. The Forest Residue and Harvesting Research Program at the Intermountain Station includes studies of the impact of harvest and roading activities on visual quality. Preliminary results were reported earlier (Schweitzer, Ullrich, and Benson 1976). This report updates earlier findings and presents …
