An Analysis Of River Channel Change Over Time In The Lamprey River, Trevor R. Fenoff

Flooding causes river channel change that threatens people and property. Due to climate change and urbanization, flooding events are projected to happen more frequently in the future, which will make the associated hazards worse. This project estimated the historical river channel change in the Lamprey River in southern New Hampshire. River channel change was estimated by delineating riverbank location on historical aerial photographs. The river channel change was compared to river width, curvature, and the number of 1.5-year flood events to explore the drivers of river channel change in the Lamprey River.

The northeastern U.S. is projected to experience more frequent short-term (1-2 month) droughts interspersed among larger precipitation events. Agroforestry practices such as silvopasture may mitigate these impacts of climate change while maintaining economic benefits of both agricultural and forestry practices. This study evaluated the effects of forest-to-silvopasture (i.e., 50% thinning) conversion on the components of evapotranspiration (transpiration, rainfall interception, and soil evaporation) during the growing season of 2016. The study coincided with a late-summer drought throughout the northeastern U.S., which allowed us to also evaluate the effects of forest-to-silvopasture conversion on drought responses of multiple tree species, including Pinus strobus, …

Groundwater is an essential input to agriculture world-wide, but it is clear that current rates of groundwater use are unsustainable in the long term. This dissertation assesses both current use of groundwater for country- to global-scale agriculture, and looks at the future of groundwater. The focus is on 1) quantifying food directly produced as a result of groundwater use across spatially-varying agricultural systems, 2) projecting future groundwater demands with consideration of climate change and human decision-making, and 3) understanding the system dynamics of groundwater re-use through surface water systems.
