Evaluation Of Different Bradyrhizobium Sp Strains On Nitrogen Fixation Capacity In Four Forage Legumes, F O. Gallardo, E S. Lopes, M C. Diez

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Eleven available strains of Bradyrhizobium sp were used to test four forage legumes, Crotalaria juncea (Crotalaria), Cajanus cajans (Guandu), Styzolobium deeriagianum (Mucuna-Ana) and Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (Guar) for symbiotic N-fixation ability. Greenhouse experiments were conducted for nine weeks in order to evaluate shoot, root, and nodule dry weight, nodule number, and shoot nitrogen content. Four strains presented relative nitrogen efficiency (RNE) over 100% with Crotalaria cultivar, whereas only one strain was more efficient with Guandu and Mucuna cultivars. Strain 633 was the only one which presented a high yield with Crotalaria, Guandu and Mucuna-Ana cultivars.

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Leucaena leucocephala is an adapted legume widely distributed in the tropical regions of Mexico. The high crude protein content of leucaena leaves renders it appropriate for ruminant feeding under commercial conditions. However, the foliage contains the non-protein amino acid mimosine, which, if consumed in high amounts, may induce toxicity in animals which have not previously consumed the legume or without microorganisms capable of degrading mimosine and its derivatives 2,3-DHP (dihydroxypyridine) and 3,4-DHP (Hammond 1995, Palmer et al. 2010, Dalzell et al. 2012). Barros-Rodríguez et al. (2012) found that dry matter intake and weight gain were reduced when …

Soil Science News and Views

Well-nodulated soybean plants are needed for most efficient soybean production. Recent research by University of Kentucky Agronomy Department personnel indicated that on Maury soil without N fertilizer, nodulating plant types of Clark 63 variety yielded 8 bushels per acre more than the non-nodulating Clark 63. With application of 125 lbs N per acre to the non-nodulating type only, both types yielded the same, showing the value of good nodulation.
