A representative set of five oil spill samples from four different regions displayed different product characteristics and different levels of weathering. Three of them were taken along shorelines affected by marine oil spill events, viz., Aboño and Prestige (Spain) and Deepwater Horizon (USA) and the other two were taken at inland oil spill sites (Angola and Kuwait). A multi-faceted environmental forensics approach revealed key molecular features. In addition to the conventional GC/MS analysis of saturated and aromatic fractions, the polar fractions also were analyzed, revealing a complex series of linear alkanones in those oil samples particularly enriched in aliphatics. Thermodesorption-GC-MS …

Comparison Of Source Rock Geochemistry Of Selected Rocks From The Schei Point Group And Ringnes Formation, Sverdrup Basin, Arctic Canada, P. K. Mukhopadhyay, F. Goodarzi, Michael A. Kruge, M. H. Alimi Jan 1997

Comparison Of Source Rock Geochemistry Of Selected Rocks From The Schei Point Group And Ringnes Formation, Sverdrup Basin, Arctic Canada, P. K. Mukhopadhyay, F. Goodarzi, Michael A. Kruge, M. H. Alimi

Organic-rich from the Schei Point group (middle to late Triassic in age) and the Ringnes formation (late Jurassic) from the Sverdrup basin of the Canadian arctic archipelago have been geochemically evaluated for source rock characterization. Most samples from the Schei Point group are organic-rich (> 2% TOC) and are considered as immature to mature oil-prone source rocks [kerogen types I, I-II (IIA) and II (IIA)]. These kerogen types contain abundant AOM1, AOM2 and alginite (Tasmanales, Nostocopsis, Leiosphaeridia, acritarch and dinoflagellate) with variable amounts of vitrinite, inertinite and exinite. Samples from the Ringnes formation contain dominant vitrinite and inertinite …

Organic Geochemistry And Petrography Of Spanish Oil Shales, Michael A. Kruge, Isabel Suarez-Ruiz Jan 1991

Organic Geochemistry And Petrography Of Spanish Oil Shales, Michael A. Kruge, Isabel Suarez-Ruiz

Four of the principal oil shale units of Spain were examined by organic geochemical and petrographic methods. The samples included three lacustrine shales (Carboniferous from Puertollano, Cretaceous from Llames and Miocene from Rubielos de Mora) and one marine shale (Lower Jurassic from Punta del Cuerno ). The petrographic observations show a dominance of liptodetrinite associated with bitumen-stained mineral matter and alginite, as well as a paucity of structured terrestrial organic matter. Geochemical work shows that the soluble organic matter is a mixture of terrestrially derived and aquatic, with the lacustrine samples having the strongest land plant signatures. Low values of …
