The Early Pennsylvanian (Bashkirian/Morrowan) Round Valley Limestone of northeastern Utah was deposited on the Wyoming shelf, a slowly subsiding depositional surface located between the Eagle and Oquirrh basins. The 311-foot-thick Round Valley Limestone displays a distinct cyclicity formed by stacked, meter-scale parasequences, comprised of a limited suite of open- to restricted-marine limestones with minor interbeds of siltstone and shale. Open-marine deposits are characterized by mudstone and heterozoan wackestone-packstone microfacies (MF1-4) and comprise the lower portions of parasequences. Rocks of these microfacies were deposited during maximum high-order transgression of the shelf. As sediment filled the limited accommodation, the shelf became restricted, …

The mineral resources of the Tintic Mining District are influenced by three major events in its geologic history; the Mesozoic Sevier Orogeny, Paleogene volcanism and Late Neogene Basin and Range extension. In this paper a detailed analysis of each these geologic events is presented to help us understand the structural host, mineralization and exhumation of the Tintic Mining District ore. Nitrate contamination of water is a worldwide issue. Nitrate is especially dangerous for young children, and may result in potentially fatal blue baby syndrome when concentration in drinking water is > 10 mg/L N-NO3. Nitrate in surface water may also lead to eutrophication. Sources of NO3- contamination include nitrate fertilizers, wastewater treatment plants, individual domestic septic systems, runoff from animal feedlots, and natural soil nitrogen. Nitrate contamination in the Elbe River drainage, covering 148,270 km2 in Germany and the Czech Republic, has been a long-term issue. Geothermobarometric, micro- and macro-structural data indicate that peak metamorphic pressure and temperature of the Greater Himalayan Sequence (GHS) of the Garhwal Region of India increase dramatically across the Main Central Thrust (MCT). Metamorphic pressure and temperature increase from ~5 kbar and ~550 ºC in the Lesser Himalayan Crystalline Sequence (LHCS) in the footwall to ~14 kbar and ~850 ºC at ~3 km above the MCT in the hanging wall (GHS). Pressures decrease slightly upsection to ~8 kbar and temperatures remain nearly constant at ~850 ºC to the structurally overlying South Tibetan Detachment (STD). The mid-Cretaceous Wayan Formation of Idaho consists of floodplain-deposited siltstones and mudstones, with subordinate fluvial sandstones and conglomerates. Deposition occurred in a tectonic foredeep at the toe of the Sevier thrust complex. Measurement of two incomplete and one complete section indicates a thickness of roughly 1,344 meters in the study area. No laterally extensive marker beds are present but the lower Wayan contains distinct chert pebble conglomerates, and the middle Wayan may contain a higher relative abundance of fluvial sandstone. Known fossil localities are limited to the lower and middle portions of the formation. The Wayan Formation, as currently defined, …

Glacier models often fail to incorporate the geometry and/or physical properties of tributaries included in complex glaciers. Tributary glaciers have different source areas and flow conditions than the adjacent main valley glacier. Ice cores (~3m depth) and surface samples (<0.5m depth) were collected from Grenzgletscher (main valley glacier) and Zwillingsgletscher (tributary glacier) in the Gornergletscher system of the Swiss Alps. Stable water isotopes indicate seasonal variation, showing 1-2 annual layers. The mean d18O for Grenzgletscher is ~4.8‰ lower than for Zwillingsgletscher. This difference may be accounted for in part by elevation differences between the accumulation areas (~1.1‰ δ18O), increased avalanching in Grenzgletscher (~1.8 ‰ δ18O), and by varying climatic conditions at the time of precipitation (~0.9-1.4‰ variation in δ18O). Using a kinematic ice flow model, core ages were estimated using effective annual layer thickness (based on seasonal variations), annual accumulation rate and ice thickness. The Grenzgletscher core is ~4 years older than the Zwillingsgletscher core. Based on ages and flow distances, the tributary has a lower flow velocity (63-87 m/yr) compared to Grenzgletscher (61-134 m/yr). To understand thermal properties of the tributary, a 775 m GPR survey (200 MHz) was conducted along a flow line of Zwillingsgletscher. Topographic waves (ogives) observed on the surface are mimicked by the onset of reflectivity 10-20 m below the surface. Reflective regions are interpreted as warmer ice at the pressure melting point, overlain by colder ice. This thermal structure is likely related to acceleration through an ice fall. Since most tributary glaciers include ice falls, thermal properties of tributary glaciers may be different from those of the main valley glacier. The properties and geometry of tributary glaciers are significantly different from main valley glaciers and should therefore be incorporated into glacier models in the future.

Climate has historically been recognized as an influence on sediment flux and deposition. The North American Monsoon is suggested as the forcing mechanism of deltaic progradational events of the Rio Grande River delta. Interpretations of reflection seismic profiles reveal that eustatic rise in sea-level from the Last Glacial Maximum to present is accompanied by several regressional events of the Rio Grande delta 5.5, 9.5, and 11.5 ka BP. Much of the migration of depositional facies within a delta system is forced by hinterland tectonics and base-level rise and fall. However, we suggest that the movement of facies within the Rio …

Geologic mapping of the Jessen Butte 7.5 minute quadrangle and the gathering of structural data throughout the quadrangle was used to determine the paleostress regime during the Laramide Orogeny along the north flank of the Uinta Mountains. The Henrys Fork thrust fault and the Uinta thrust fault are major north bounding faults and within the Jessen Butte quadrangle these faults transfer deformation from one to the other. The Jessen Butte thrust fault is a fault splay that splits off from the Henrys Fork thrust fault. Complex fold geometries were created by the interaction of the faults. The Jurassic Twist Gulch Formation of central Utah was deposited in the active Arapien sub-basin of the Western Cordillera foreland trough. We herein demonstrate the utility of integrating facies analysis, terrestrial sequence stratigraphy, and detrital zircon (U-Pb) ages to improve paleogeographic reconstructions as well as identify regional unconformities, locate fluvial depocenters, and infer sediment supply/accommodation space ratios. Strata of the Twist Gulch Formation in Pigeon Creek Canyon (PCC) near Levan, Utah consists primarily of alluvial deposits, while in Salina Canyon (SC) the Twist Gulch Formation is comprised of a mix of alluvial and marginal marine deposits associated with the Jurassic …
