Peer-to-peer networking overcomes the single point of failure and bandwidth limitations inherent to the centralized server model of file-sharing. It is both a popular means of sharing digital content and a major consumer of internet traffic, with BitTorrent being the most-used protocol. As such, significant research has gone into improving peer-to-peer performance in order to reduce both download times and networking costs. One aspect that can affect performance is the client’s selection of peers to download from, as the time spent downloading from even a single poor-performing peer can impact the overall download duration.

In April 2015, BitTorrent Inc. released their distributed peer-to-peer powered browser, Project Maelstrom, into public beta. The browser facilitates a new alternative website distribution paradigm to the traditional HTTP-based, client-server model. This decentralised web is powered by each of the visitors accessing each Maelstrom hosted website. Each user shares their copy of the website;s source code and multimedia content with new visitors. As a result, a Maelstrom hosted website cannot be taken offline by law enforcement or any other parties. BitTorrent is a peer to peer file sharing protocol used to exchange files over the internet, and is used for both legal and illegal activity. Newer BitTorrent client programs are using proprietary UDP based protocols as well as TCP to transmit traffic, and also have the option of encrypting the traffic. This network forensic research examined a number of packet analysis programs to determine whether they could detect such traffic from a packet captures of a complete file transmitted using one of four protocol options. For traditional web servers, available bandwidth decreases as the number of clients increases. This can cause servers to serve files slowly or to become completely overwhelmed when load grows too high. BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer solution to this problem, but it requires manual configuration for each file to be delivered this way. We develop a new system that integrates peer-to-peer file delivery with traditional client-server downloads. Clients initially attempt to download a file from a web server; if this is too slow, they transition to peer-to-peer delivery. One of the main goals of BitTorrent is to reduce load on web servers by encouraging clients to share content between themselves. However, BitTorrent’s current design relies heavily on the original source to serve a disproportionate amount of the file. We modify standard BitTorrent software so that a source determines the current popularity of each of the blocks of a file and tries to serve only those blocks that are rare. Using extensive PlanetLab experiments, we show that this modification can save a significant amount of the source’s upload bandwidth, with the tradeoff of some increased peer download time. In …

BitTorrent is an attractive peer-to-peer technology that attempts to reduce load on file sharers by allowing downloaders to share content between themselves. BitTorrent's current focus is to provide users with a fast download, which requires the file sharer to serve a disproportionate amount of the file. We present a modification to the BitTorrent seeding algorithm that reduces the load on BitTorrent file sharers. Essentially, if a block of a file is already available from a significant number of peers, the file sharer refuses to share that block, forcing peers to get it from each other. BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer protocol useful for distributing large files over the Internet. Many organizations use BitTorrent to distribute their software in order to reduce client download time and reduce the load on their servers. While there is a lot of legitimate content available via BitTorrent, some organizations ban BitTorrent usage due to concerns over copyright infringement and the amount of bandwidth that peers can consume. This research in progress aims to evaluate the effectiveness of commercial programs to erase traces of the use of BitTorrent software. The erasure programs MaxErase, P2PDoctor, Privacy Suite, Window Washer and R-Clean and Wipe were used on a machine that had used the BitTorrent client Azureus to download two torrent files. The drive was imaged and then searched for torrent files. The registry was also examined on the source machine.
