Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Programs: An Assessment Of Public Participation As A Means Of Fostering Environmental Stewardship, Christopher Damon
Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Programs: An Assessment Of Public Participation As A Means Of Fostering Environmental Stewardship, Christopher Damon
Theses and Major Papers
Volunteer water quality monitoring organizations from across the country were surveyed (n=516) to determine the relationship between public involvement and the generation of stewardship within the community. Program coordinators were asked first to rate the level of stewardship values within the community, and then respond to questions covering four broad areas of public involvement: pre-existing conditions, public education, volunteer behavior, and communal involvement. For each question, organizations were aggregated by response, and a frequency analysis was performed to discover the most common responses in each of the four public involvement categories. the mean of perceived stewardship values was graphed as …
Liability Issues In The Development Of Electronic Chart Display Information Systems, Daniel R. Martin
Liability Issues In The Development Of Electronic Chart Display Information Systems, Daniel R. Martin
Theses and Major Papers
The Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) is a new and evolving aid to navigation. Proponents claim ECDIS will help navigators to synthesize previously disparate information and result in safer navigation. The technology to implement ECDIS already exists; the major hurdle the maritime community faces is the legal uncertainties associated with ECDIS. This paper investigates the potential legal impact ECDIS would have on the government, shipowners, mariners, and manufacturers, and evaluates current international efforts to promote ECDIS. Through a detailed analysis of admiralty and aeronautical case history, it is evident that; 1) generation of electronic nautical charts can post a …
An Underwater Science And Resource Database Management System And Proposed Applications To Marine Geographic Information Systems, Ivar Babb
Theses and Major Papers
The National Undersea Research Program (NURP) is a federally-funded program that provides scientists with modern in situ technology that allows them to conduct research that goes beyond the constraints of traditional oceanographic methodology. NURP is comprised of five regional centers that administer underwater science, and through the principal investigators that are supported generate a vast quantity of diverse data. This data and information bank consists of the following: raw environmental data, logistical data, locational data, information about the scientists, video and still photograph documentation, and publication information. This paper describes the theory behind the implementation of a Database Management System …
The Use Of Remote Sensing Techniques And Geographic Information Systems By Coastal Managers In Rhode Island, Margaret H. Sano
The Use Of Remote Sensing Techniques And Geographic Information Systems By Coastal Managers In Rhode Island, Margaret H. Sano
Theses and Major Papers
Planners and managers must understand the physical and anthropogenic changes taking place within the coastal zone to provide effective management. Remote sensing techniques and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are excellent tools for contributing data and analytical capabilities to identify possible conflicts within the coastal zone. This study examines the potential and actual use of these technologies by coastal managers within Rhode Island. Potential usage is discussed in terms of the range of data available and the feasibility of using the data for coastal problems. Also, GIS capabilities in Rhode Island are explored. Finally a survey designed to measure the actual …
Academically-Sponsored Coastal Research Vessels In The New England Region: An Assessment Of Current Management And Implications For The Future, Brendan B. Mcavoy
Academically-Sponsored Coastal Research Vessels In The New England Region: An Assessment Of Current Management And Implications For The Future, Brendan B. Mcavoy
Theses and Major Papers
In New England an informal communications network exists between coastal research vessel operating institutions. Vessel scheduling and operational support has been identified as adequate for the current amount of research being conducted within the region. However, societal shift towards coastal regions is prompting an increase in attention to research within the coastal zone. Current and pending federal initiatives are responding to this increased research need. This, in turn, is beginning to impose greater demands on coastal vessel sea-time. Therefore, a strengthening of the region's inter-institutional communications network may be warranted for the future in order to better coordinate coastal research …
A Computerized Marine Data And Information System-Endex/Oasis, Steven J. Tibbitt
A Computerized Marine Data And Information System-Endex/Oasis, Steven J. Tibbitt
Theses and Major Papers
The volume of international and national environmental data and information in the marine, earth and atmospheric sciences has created the need to systematically organize, handle, manipulate, store and retrieve this material utilizing sophisticated computer hardware and provide the scientist, student, planner and decision-maker with the awareness and accessibility of available data and information. Consonant with the objectives outlined for NOAA and the need generated by the explosion of information and data in this area, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA), Environmental Data Service (EDS) and the National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC), have an ongoing development effort in the Envirorrmental Data …
A Geo-Marine Informational System For Coastal Zone Management, Stella Maris A. Vallejo
A Geo-Marine Informational System For Coastal Zone Management, Stella Maris A. Vallejo
Theses and Major Papers
The purpose of this paper is to present a system analysis for the evaluation and interpretation of information on coastal zone management. We understand by system analysis the consideration of a complex made by related parts, and not merely a totally of parts, where the significance of one thing depends on its relationship with the others. Based on this criteria of interconnections between phenomena, we assume, we are going to give the coastal zone a treatment of a system and in this way impose a correlative statement to the information related to this area. This system approach for the information …
