Deformable Meshes For Shape Recovery: Models And Applications, Chang Liu Jan 2011

Deformable Meshes For Shape Recovery: Models And Applications, Chang Liu

Wayne State University Dissertations

With the advance of scanning and imaging technology, more and more 3D objects become available. Among them, deformable objects have gained increasing interests. They include medical instances such as organs, a sequence of objects in motion, and objects of similar shapes where a meaningful correspondence can be established between each other. Thus, it requires tools to store, compare, and retrieve them. Many of these operations depend on successful shape recovery. Shape recovery is the task to retrieve an object from the environment where its geometry is hidden or implicitly known. As a simple and versatile tool, mesh is widely used …

Probabilistic Models For Patient Scheduling, Adel Alaeddini Jan 2011

Probabilistic Models For Patient Scheduling, Adel Alaeddini

Wayne State University Theses

In spite of the success of theoretical appointment scheduling methods, there have been significant failures in practice primarily due to the rapid increase in the number of no-shows and cancelations from the individuals in recent times. These disruptions not only cause inconvenience to the management but also has a significant impact on the revenue, cost and resource utilization. In this research, we develop a hybrid probabilistic model based on logistic regression and Bayesian inference to predict the probability of no-shows in real-time. We also develop two novel non-sequential and sequential optimization models which can effectively use no-show probabilities for scheduling …

An Experience Report Of The Solo Iterative Process, Christopher Dorman Jan 2011

An Experience Report Of The Solo Iterative Process, Christopher Dorman

Wayne State University Theses

The field of software engineering is over 50 years old; originally, mathematicians and engineers thought software development was more of an art form than a defined process. These first software engineers managed to produce a variety of complex, working software; however, many software engineers today use agile processes. This thesis is an experience report in an agile process called the Solo Iterative Process.

In this thesis, previous research is reviewed in previous solo processes, team processes, individual phases of software evolution and software evolution tools. Then the Solo Iterative Process is defined. To begin the experience report a subject software, …

Cloudaligner: A Fast And Full-Featured Mapreduce Based Tool For Sequence Mapping, Tung Nguyen, Weisong Shi, Douglas Ruden

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Research in genetics has developed rapidly recently due to the aid of next generation sequencing (NGS). However, massively-parallel NGS produces enormous amounts of data, which leads to storage, compatibility, scalability, and performance issues. The Cloud Computing and MapReduce framework, which utilizes hundreds or thousands of shared computers to map sequencing reads quickly and efficiently to reference genome sequences, appears to be a very promising solution for these issues. Consequently, it has been adopted by many organizations recently, and the initial results are very promising. However, since these are only initial steps toward this trend, the developed software does …

Bio::Phylo-Phyloinformatic Analysis Using Perl, Rutger A. Vos, Jason Caravas, Klaas Hartmann, Mark A. Jensen, Chase Miller Jan 2011

Bio::Phylo-Phyloinformatic Analysis Using Perl, Rutger A. Vos, Jason Caravas, Klaas Hartmann, Mark A. Jensen, Chase Miller

Wayne State University Associated BioMed Central Scholarship

Abstract

Background

Phyloinformatic analyses involve large amounts of data and metadata of complex structure. Collecting, processing, analyzing, visualizing and summarizing these data and metadata should be done in steps that can be automated and reproduced. This requires flexible, modular toolkits that can represent, manipulate and persist phylogenetic data and metadata as objects with programmable interfaces.

Results

This paper presents Bio::Phylo, a Perl5 toolkit for phyloinformatic analysis. It implements classes and methods that are compatible with the well-known BioPerl toolkit, but is independent from it (making it easy to install) and features a richer API and a data model that is …

Hyfs: Design And Implementation Of A Reliable File System, Jianqiang Luo Jan 2011

Hyfs: Design And Implementation Of A Reliable File System, Jianqiang Luo

Wayne State University Dissertations

Building reliable data storage systems is crucial to any commercial or scientific applications. Modern storage systems are complicated, and they are comprised of many components, from hardware to software. Problems may occur to any component of storage systems and cause data loss. When this kind of failures happens, storage systems cannot continue their data services, which may result in large revenue loss or even catastrophe to enterprises. Therefore, it is critically important to build reliable storage systems to ensure data reliability.

In this dissertation, we propose to employ general erasure codes to build a reliable file system, called HyFS. HyFS …

Shape Analysis In Shape Space, Vahid Taimouri Jan 2011

Shape Analysis In Shape Space, Vahid Taimouri

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study aims to classify different deformations based on the shape space concept. A shape space is a quotient space in which each point corresponds to a class of shapes. The shapes of each class are transformed to each other by a transformation group preserving a geometrical property in which we are interested. Therefore, each deformation is a curve on the high dimensional shape space manifold, and one can classify the deformations by comparison of their corresponding deformation curves in shape space. Towards this end, two classification methods are proposed.

In the first method, a quasi conformal shape space is …

Making Memory: Techne, Technology, And The Refashioning Of Contemporary Memory, Kimberly Lacey Jan 2011

Making Memory: Techne, Technology, And The Refashioning Of Contemporary Memory, Kimberly Lacey

Wayne State University Dissertations

My dissertation answers two questions: Does the tension between interactive technologies and rhetoric re-shape the nature and relevance of the canon of memory? Do interactive technologies affect the ways we remember and persuade? I argue that my interpretation of techne suggests possibilities for the creation and production of new types of memory in combination with digital media. To interrogate this connection, I suggest three interpretations of the Greek concept, techne: as a process that is inherently productive; as a force that renegotiates contemporary sources of social power; and as a skill that balances expert knowledge with instrumentality. I explore …

Multi-Objective Cultural Algorithms, Dapeng Liu Jan 2011

Multi-Objective Cultural Algorithms, Dapeng Liu

Wayne State University Dissertations

Evolutionary algorithms, including the Cultural Algorithms and other bio-inspired approaches are frequently used to solve problems that are not tractable for traditional approaches. Previously, research in the field of evolutionary optimization has focused on single-objective problems. On the contrary, most real-world problems involve more than one objective where these objectives may conflict with each other.

The newest implementation of the Cultural Algorithms to solve multi-objective optimization is named MOCAT. It is not the first time that the Cultural Algorithms have been used to solve multi-objective problems. Nonetheless, it is the first time that the Cultural Algorithms systematically merge techniques that …

Multi-Scale And Multi-Spectral Shape Analysis: From 2d To 3d, Zhaoqiang Lai Jan 2011

Multi-Scale And Multi-Spectral Shape Analysis: From 2d To 3d, Zhaoqiang Lai

Wayne State University Dissertations

Shape analysis is a fundamental aspect of many problems in computer graphics and computer vision, including shape matching, shape registration, object recognition and classification. Since the SIFT achieves excellent matching results in 2D image domain, it inspires us to convert the 3D shape analysis to 2D image analysis using geometric maps. However, the major disadvantage of geometric maps is that it introduces inevitable, large distortions when mapping large, complex and topologically complicated surfaces to a canonical domain. It is demanded for the researchers to construct the scale space directly on the 3D shape.

To address these research issues, in this …

Efficient Channel Allocation And Medium Access Organization Algorithms For Vehicular Networking, Zaydoun Yahya Rawashdeh Jan 2011

Efficient Channel Allocation And Medium Access Organization Algorithms For Vehicular Networking, Zaydoun Yahya Rawashdeh

Wayne State University Dissertations

Due to the limited bandwidth available for Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs), organizing the wireless channel access to efficiently use the bandwidth is one of the main challenges in VANET. In this dissertation, we focus on channel allocation and media access organization for Vehicle-to-Roadside Units (V2R) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications. An efficient channel allocation algorithm for Roadside Unit (RSU) access is proposed. The goal of the algorithm is to increase system throughput by admitting more tasks (vehicles) and at the same time reduce the risk of the admitted tasks. The algorithm admits the new requests only when their requirements can be …
