End User As Application Developer For Decision Support, Shah Jahan Miah Aug 2009

End User As Application Developer For Decision Support, Shah Jahan Miah

Dr Shah Jahan Miah

This paper discusses a new generation end-user centred information service view, for developing decision support applications. The tailorable solution allows specific applications to be designed by end-users, where integrity is assured by the architecture’s control in knowledge-based systems. In the development approach, the end-users at different level engage in interaction for secondary application creation. This initiative reinforces a shift from the traditional IS development process to a new provision where end-users can actively participate for a secondary application design. A secondary application design can be seen as a secondary activity for tailoring applications by the end users so that it …

Measuring Quality In Journal Publishing: New And Emerging Methods, Gordon C. Tibbitts Aug 2009

Measuring Quality In Journal Publishing: New And Emerging Methods, Gordon C. Tibbitts

Gordon C. Tibbitts III

This presentation focuses on measuring quality from a high-level business perspective. Participants will learn how to survive in a digital age where journals live in the new “jungle.” We will elaborate on traditional methods of quality (ISI, peer review, etc.) and discuss product differentiation (how one gets "heard"). There is an emerging trend where the quality of content that is “good enough” is being read more often than “high quality” content. Identifying how the web makes all content ubiquitous and how you need to get your content read in this new space is a challenge. Several techniques for achieving greater …

Safety Intelligence And Legal Machine Language: Do We Need Three Laws Of Robotics?, Chien Hsun Chen, Y. H. Weng, C. T. Sun

Chien Hsun Chen

In this chapter we will describe a legal framework for Next Generation Robots (NGRs) that has safety as its central focus. The framework is offered in response to the current lack of clarity regarding robot safety guidelines, despite the development and impending release of tens of thousands of robots into workplaces and homes around the world. We also describe our proposal for a safety intelligence (SI) concept that addresses issues associated with open texture risk for robots that will have a relatively high level of autonomy in their interactions with humans. Whereas Isaac Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics are frequently …

The Application Of Fuzzy Logic To The Modeling Of Product Density For Children Ready-Made Clothes, R. W. Hndoosh

R. W. Hndoosh

The main objective of this research is to design a program model for a new product density estimation by implementing fuzzy logic techniques. This model is designed depending upon some of the factors influencing product density. The model consists of conditional rules. Mamdani fuzzy inference system is used for reasoning process because it is an efficient type of fuzzy inference for knowledge to make decision processing. The model is designed using MATLAB as the programming tool for writing the model's programs. The model is applied to real data average taken from Mosul factory for children Ready-Made clothes. The results obtained …

Research On Fractal Mathematics And Some Application In Mechanics, Yang Xiaojun Jun 2009

Research On Fractal Mathematics And Some Application In Mechanics, Yang Xiaojun

Xiao-Jun Yang

Since Mandelbrot proposed the concept of fractal in 1970s’, fractal has been applied in various areas such as science, economics, cultures and arts because of the universality of fractal phenomena. It provides a new analytical tool to reveal the complexity of the real world. Nowadays the calculus in a fractal space becomes a hot topic in the world. Based on the established definitions of fractal derivative and fractal integral, the fundamental theorems of fractal derivatives and fractal integrals are investigated in detail. The fractal double integral and fractal triple integral are discussed and the variational principle in fractal space has …

Strongly Coupled Computation Of Material Response And Nonequilibrium Flow For Hypersonic Ablation, Alexandre Martin, Iain D. Boyd Jun 2009

Strongly Coupled Computation Of Material Response And Nonequilibrium Flow For Hypersonic Ablation, Alexandre Martin, Iain D. Boyd

Alexandre Martin

A one-dimensional material response implicit solver with surface ablation and pyrolysis is strongly coupled to LeMANS, a CFD code for the simulation of weakly ionized hypersonic flows in thermo-chemical non-equilibrium. Using blowing wall boundary conditions and a moving mesh algorithm, the results of a strongly coupled solution of a re-entry problem are presented, using the well defined case of the IRV-2 vehicle. Results are compared to other coupled codes and show good agreement with published numerical results.

Application Layer End-To-End Arguments: From Ends To Means, And Beyond Network Neutrality, Matthias Bärwolff May 2009

Application Layer End-To-End Arguments: From Ends To Means, And Beyond Network Neutrality, Matthias Bärwolff

Matthias Bärwolff

This paper observes that the ultimate objectives of the end-to-end arguments do not necessarily entail a preference for having functions with the end hosts rather than with the network. The horizontal connotations of the end-to-end metaphor collapse when it is elevated to an application layer argument featuring strong "second order" objectives such as those pursued by network neutrality adherents. An internet that serves those ends will have to allow for ISPs to tussle with end users over economic value and surplus considerations, and acknowledge the beneficial rôle of the resulting transactions between the internet’s stakeholders.

An Immune Self-Adaptive Differential Evolution Algorithm With Application To Estimate Kinetic Parameters For Homogeneous Mercury Oxidation, Chunping Hu, Xuefeng Yan Apr 2009

An Immune Self-Adaptive Differential Evolution Algorithm With Application To Estimate Kinetic Parameters For Homogeneous Mercury Oxidation, Chunping Hu, Xuefeng Yan

Chunping Hu

A new version of differential evolution (DE) algorithm, in which immune concepts and methods are applied to determine the parameter setting, named immune self-adaptive differential evolution (ISDE), is proposed to improve the performance of the DE algorithm. During the actual operation, ISDE seeks the optimal parameters arising from the evolutionary process, which enable ISDE to alter the algorithm for different optimization problems and improve the performance of ISDE by the control parameters’ self-adaptation. The performance of the proposed method is studied with the use of nine benchmark problems and compared with original DE algorithm and other well-known self-adaptive DE algorithms. …

Dpi Considered Not Harmful, Matthias Bärwolff Mar 2009

Dpi Considered Not Harmful, Matthias Bärwolff

Matthias Bärwolff

There is a strong sentiment both in technology and in policy circles against deep packet inspection by ISPs as a means to augment their services or control and shape the uses of their network. We argue that the premise of full transparency of the network is no more viable, and should give way to a notion explicitly recognising the role of networks in assuming functions above the network layer on behalf of the end-systems, and the end-systems controlling, endorsing, and verifying the process of having functions delegated towards the network. Such a paradigm may be a step towards conceptualising an …

Kpca-Rvm Modeling Method And Its Application For Soft Sensor, Xuefeng Yan, Jia Chen, Chunping Hu, Feng Qian Mar 2009

Kpca-Rvm Modeling Method And Its Application For Soft Sensor, Xuefeng Yan, Jia Chen, Chunping Hu, Feng Qian

Chunping Hu

A novel modeling method integrated KPCA with RVM is proposed. Firstly, kernel primary component analysis (KPCA) is employed to identify the principal components from the nonlinear transform data of independent variables, which are regarded as character variables. Then, regression between character variables and dependent variables is done based on RVM, and the optimal number of the character variables is adaptively determined according to the generalization performance of the regression model. Thus, KPCA-RVM method can eliminate the disturbance of redundant information and achieve the best nonlinear model with good generalization performance. Finally, the method of KPCA-RVM is demonstrated by a 4-CBA's …

A Methodology To Allow Rural Extension Professionals To Build (With Don Kerr And John Gammack), Shah Jahan Miah Jan 2009

A Methodology To Allow Rural Extension Professionals To Build (With Don Kerr And John Gammack), Shah Jahan Miah

Dr Shah Jahan Miah

Expert systems (ES) development technology has been used to build rural business applications in the past but these have usually been developed using traditional expert systems shells. This paper introduces a new architecture for the development of a design environment where the domain experts can build a knowledge base for target-specific ES for rural business operators. The system allows rural business operators to use their own knowledge in building their own, target-specific ES for tailored development to their own specific requirements. At this stage, this reusable design environment caters for the Australian dairy industry but in the long run we …

Ore: A Framework To Measure Organizational Risk During Information Systems Evolution, Aditya Agrawal, Gavin Finnie, Padmanabhan Krishnan Jan 2009

Ore: A Framework To Measure Organizational Risk During Information Systems Evolution, Aditya Agrawal, Gavin Finnie, Padmanabhan Krishnan

Padmanabhan Krishnan

Information systems (IS) change initiatives often represent the single largest investment (and therefore risk) for large corporations, yet there exist few management frameworks in the literature to help decision makers measure organizational risk in a balanced manner during this organization-wide change process. The ORE framework has been developed as a design science artifact based on the Leavitt diamond paradigm as a multi-criteria, relative risk, condition consequence, management decision framework enabling decision makers to calculate and compare risk evolution at fixed points of the change cycle and make structured and balanced risk mitigation decisions. In this chapter the principles, architecture and …

The Fundamentals Of Local Fractional Derivative Of The One-Variable Non-Differentiable Functions, Yang Xiaojun Jan 2009

The Fundamentals Of Local Fractional Derivative Of The One-Variable Non-Differentiable Functions, Yang Xiaojun

Xiao-Jun Yang

Based on the theory of Jumarie’s fractional calculus, local fractional derivative is modified in detail and its fundamentals of local fractional derivative are proposed in this paper. The uniqueness of local fractional derivative is obtained and the Rolle’s theorem, the mean value theorem, the Cauchy’s generalized mean value theorem and the L’Hospital’s rules are proved.

Local Fractional Newton’S Method Derived From Modified Local Fractional Calculus, Yang Xiao-Jun Jan 2009

Local Fractional Newton’S Method Derived From Modified Local Fractional Calculus, Yang Xiao-Jun

Xiao-Jun Yang

A local fractional Newton’s method, which is derived from the modified local fractional calculus , is proposed in the present paper. Its iterative function is obtained and the convergence of the iterative function is discussed. The comparison between the classical Newton iteration and the local fractional Newton iteration has been carried out. It is shown that the iterative value of the local fractional Newton method better approximates the real-value than that of the classical one.

Uniqueprimer - A Web Utility For Design Of Specific Pcr Primers And Probes, Torstein Tengs Jan 2009

Uniqueprimer - A Web Utility For Design Of Specific Pcr Primers And Probes, Torstein Tengs

Dr. Torstein Tengs

We have developed a web-based tool for design of specific PCR primers and probes. The program allows you to enter primer sequence information as well as an optional probe, and sequence similarity searches (MegaBLAST) will be performed to see if the sequences match the same sequence entry in the specified database. If primers (and probe) match, this will be reported. The program can handle overlapping amplicons, amplification from a single primer, ambiguous bases and other problematic cases.

A Neural Network: Family Competition Genetic Algorithm And Its Application In Electromagnetic Optimization, Chien Hsun Chen, P. Y. Chen, H. Weng Jan 2009

A Neural Network: Family Competition Genetic Algorithm And Its Application In Electromagnetic Optimization, Chien Hsun Chen, P. Y. Chen, H. Weng

Chien Hsun Chen

This study proposes a neural network-family competition genetic algorithm (NN-FCGA) for solving the electromagnetic (EM) optimization and other general-purpose optimization problems. The NN-FCGA is a hybrid evolutionary-based algorithm, combining the good approximation performance of neural network (NN) and the robust and effective optimum search ability of the family competition genetic algorithms (FCGA) to accelerate the optimization process. In this study, the NN-FCGA is used to extract a set of optimal design parameters for two representative design examples: the multiple section low-pass filter and the polygonal electromagnetic absorber. Our results demonstrate that the optimal electromagnetic properties given by the NN-FCGA are …

Toward The Human-Robot Co-Existence Society: On Safety Intelligence For Next Generation Robots, Chien Hsun Chen, Y. H. Weng, C. T. Sun Jan 2009

Toward The Human-Robot Co-Existence Society: On Safety Intelligence For Next Generation Robots, Chien Hsun Chen, Y. H. Weng, C. T. Sun

Chien Hsun Chen

Technocrats from many developed countries, especially Japan and South Korea, are preparing for the human-robot co-existence society that they believe will emerge by 2030. Regulators are assuming that within the next two decades, robots will be capable of adapting to complex, unstructured environments and interacting with humans to assist with the performance of daily life tasks. Unlike heavily regulated industrial robots that toil in isolated settings, Next Generation Robots will have relative autonomy, which raises a number of safety issues that are the focus of this article. Our purpose is to describe a framework for a legal system focused on …
