End User As Application Developer For Decision Support, Shah Jahan Miah Aug 2009

End User As Application Developer For Decision Support, Shah Jahan Miah

Dr Shah Jahan Miah

This paper discusses a new generation end-user centred information service view, for developing decision support applications. The tailorable solution allows specific applications to be designed by end-users, where integrity is assured by the architecture’s control in knowledge-based systems. In the development approach, the end-users at different level engage in interaction for secondary application creation. This initiative reinforces a shift from the traditional IS development process to a new provision where end-users can actively participate for a secondary application design. A secondary application design can be seen as a secondary activity for tailoring applications by the end users so that it …

A Methodology To Allow Rural Extension Professionals To Build (With Don Kerr And John Gammack), Shah Jahan Miah Jan 2009

A Methodology To Allow Rural Extension Professionals To Build (With Don Kerr And John Gammack), Shah Jahan Miah

Dr Shah Jahan Miah

Expert systems (ES) development technology has been used to build rural business applications in the past but these have usually been developed using traditional expert systems shells. This paper introduces a new architecture for the development of a design environment where the domain experts can build a knowledge base for target-specific ES for rural business operators. The system allows rural business operators to use their own knowledge in building their own, target-specific ES for tailored development to their own specific requirements. At this stage, this reusable design environment caters for the Australian dairy industry but in the long run we …

A Generic Design Environment For The Rural Industry Knowledge Acquisition (With Don Kerr And John Gammack), Shah Jahan Miah Jan 2008

A Generic Design Environment For The Rural Industry Knowledge Acquisition (With Don Kerr And John Gammack), Shah Jahan Miah

Dr Shah Jahan Miah

This paper describes a new knowledge acquisition method using a generic design environment where context-sensitive knowledge is used to build specific DSS for rural business. Although standard knowledge acquisition methods have been applied in rural business applications, uptake remains low and familiar weaknesses such as obsolescence and brittleness apply. We describe a decision support system (DSS) building environment where contextual factors relevant to the end users are directly taken into consideration. This ‘‘end user enabled design environment” (EUEDE) engages both domain experts in creating an expert knowledge base and business operators/end users (such as farmers) in using this knowledge for …

Ontology Development For Context-Sensitive Decision Support, Shah Jahan Miah Jan 2007

Ontology Development For Context-Sensitive Decision Support, Shah Jahan Miah

Dr Shah Jahan Miah

Semantics have become acceptable techniques for data integration, data interoperability and data visualization in many software engineering domains and web developments over the past few years. This paper describes a software development where semantic ontology techniques have been used for developing a generic knowledge model applicable across rural industries. This technique enables us to outline a single access point for building end-user specific knowledge based systems. We have called the new solution prototype an End-User Enabled Design Environment (EUEDE) where the knowledge components from the problem ontology is used in building specific decision systems that are contextsensitive to end-user factors. …

Development Of A Design Environment For End Users To Build The Target-Relevant Decision Support Tools In Rural Industry, Shah Jahan Miah Jan 2006

Development Of A Design Environment For End Users To Build The Target-Relevant Decision Support Tools In Rural Industry, Shah Jahan Miah

Dr Shah Jahan Miah

Decision support systems (DSS) developed by end users have had limited success in rural operations. This paper will discuss the development stages of a new tool for improving the DSS development process in the rural industries. The object of this project is to develop an end user enabled design environment (EUEDE) which will allow a non-technical computer user to build target-relevant decision support tools. The resultant design environment aims to allow the end user to re-use and share their knowledge within a specific business context. This approach will facilitate flexibility to build relevant DSS’s for an end user’s specific decision …
