Energy‐Efficient Content Delivery Networks Using Cluster Shutdown, Vimal Mathew, Ramesh Sitaraman, Prashant Shenoy
Ramesh Sitaraman
Content delivery networks (CDNs) are an important class of Internet-scale distributed systems that deliver web, streaming, and application content to end users. A commercial CDN could comprise hundreds of thousands of servers deployed in over thousand clusters across the globe and incurs significant energy costs for powering and cooling their servers. Since energy costs are a significant component of the total operating expense of a CDN, we propose and explore a novel technique called cluster shutdown that turns off an entire cluster of servers of a CDN that is deployed within a data center. By doing so, cluster shutdown saves …

Dynamic Provisioning In Next-Generation Data Centers With On-Site Power Production, Jinlong Tu, Lian Lu, Minghua Chen, Ramesh Sitaraman

The critical need for clean and economical sources of energy is transforming data centers that are primarily energy consumers to also energy producers. We focus on minimizing the operating costs of next-generation data centers that can jointly optimize the energy supply from on-site generators and the power grid, and the energy demand from servers as well as power conditioning and cooling systems. We formulate the cost minimization problem and present an offline optimal algorithm. For “on-grid” data centers that use only the grid, we devise a deterministic online algorithm that achieves the best possible competitive ratio of 2−αs, where αs …
Network Performance: Does It Really Matter To Users And By How Much?, Ramesh Sitaraman
Network Performance: Does It Really Matter To Users And By How Much?, Ramesh Sitaraman
Ramesh Sitaraman
Network performance has been the subject of much research over the past decades. However, the impact of performance on a network’s users is much less understood from a scientific standpoint. This gap in our knowledge is particularly stark since the primary role of real-world network performance is to increase user satisfaction, and encourage user behaviors that lead to greater monetization. As an example, consider the video delivery ecosystem consisting of content delivery networks (CDNs), video content providers, and their users. Content providers use CDNs to deliver videos to their users with higher performance. In turn, content providers expect the higher …
