Benchmarking makes it possible to identify low-performing buildings, establishes a baseline for measuring performance improvements, enables setting of energy conservation targets, and encourages energy savings by creating a competitive environment. Statistical approaches evaluate building energy efficiency by comparing measured energy consumption to other similar buildings typically using annual measurements. However, it is important to consider different time periods in benchmarking because of differences in their consumption patterns. For example, an office can be efficient during the night, but inefficient during operating hours due to occupants’ wasteful behavior. Moreover, benchmarking studies often use a single regression model for different building categories. …

Optimizing Fpga-Based Cnn Accelerator For Energy Efficiency With An Extended Roofline Model, Sayed Omid Ayat, Mohamed Khalil-Hani, Ab Al-Hadi Ab Rahman Jan 2018

Optimizing Fpga-Based Cnn Accelerator For Energy Efficiency With An Extended Roofline Model, Sayed Omid Ayat, Mohamed Khalil-Hani, Ab Al-Hadi Ab Rahman

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In recent years, the convolutional neural network (CNN) has found wide acceptance in solving practical computer vision and image recognition problems. Also recently, due to its flexibility, faster development time, and energy efficiency, the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) has become an attractive solution to exploit the inherent parallelism in the feedforward process of the CNN. However, to meet the demands for high accuracy of today's practical recognition applications that typically have massive datasets, the sizes of CNNs have to be larger and deeper. Enlargement of the CNN aggravates the problem of off-chip memory bottleneck in the FPGA platform since there …

Energy Efficiency With An Application Container, Özmen Emre Demi̇rkol, Aşkin Demi̇rkol Jan 2018

Energy Efficiency With An Application Container, Özmen Emre Demi̇rkol, Aşkin Demi̇rkol

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Efficient use of energy is an issue that the information technology (IT) world gives prominence to both in academia and industry. Cloud computing and the Internet of things, today's most popular subjects, make the efficient use of resources and energy even more important. Every year, millions of smart devices connected to the Internet increase the demand for data center capacity to provide service to those devices. This increases energy consumption in the IT sector. Thus, more efficient use of energy in these systems is of critical importance. The increase in the migration to cloud computing makes fast and efficient infrastructure-as-a-service …

Design Of A Multiagent-Based Smart Microgrid System For Building Energy And Comfort Management, Batyrkhan Omarov, Aigerim Altayeva Jan 2018

Design Of A Multiagent-Based Smart Microgrid System For Building Energy And Comfort Management, Batyrkhan Omarov, Aigerim Altayeva

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Modern intelligent control system design methodology in the electric power industry and their features are considered when providing the required comfort in multizone buildings with the use of multiagent power consumption and comfort management systems. Such a control system covers all the monitored zones of a building and, if necessary, can provide the greatest possible overall comfort in the building while reducing the required electric power. The purpose of this study was to develop a comfort management system in a multizoned building that can provide comfort while reducing the required electric power.

Ensuring energy efficiency, data reliability, and security is important in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A combination of variants from the cryptographic secret sharing technique and the disjoint multipath routing scheme is an effective strategy to address these requirements. Although Shamir's secret sharing (SSS) provides the desired reliability and information-theoretic security, it is not energy efficient. Alternatively, Shamir's ramp secret sharing (SRSS) provides energy efficiency and data reliability, but is only computationally secure. We argue that both these approaches may suffer from a compromised node (CN) attack when a minimum number of nodes is compromised. Hence, we propose a new scheme …
