Alternative Principal Components Regression Procedures For Dendrohydrologic Reconstructions, Hugo G. Hidalgo, Thomas C. Piechota, John A. Dracup Nov 2000

Alternative Principal Components Regression Procedures For Dendrohydrologic Reconstructions, Hugo G. Hidalgo, Thomas C. Piechota, John A. Dracup

Civil and Environmental Engineering and Construction Faculty Research

Streamflow reconstruction using tree ring information (dendrohydrology) has traditionally used principal components analysis (PCA) and stepwise regression to form a transfer function. However, PCA has several procedural choices that may result in very different reconstructions. This study assesses the different procedures in PCA-based regression and suggests alternative procedures for selection of variables and principal components. Cross-validation statistics are presented as an alternative for independently testing and identifying the optimal model. The objective is to use these statistics as a measure of the model's performance to find a conceptually acceptable model with a low prediction error and the fewest number of …

Dynamic Fluvial Systems And Gravel Progradation In The Himalayan Foreland, Nicholas Brozovic, Douglas W. Burbank Mar 2000

Dynamic Fluvial Systems And Gravel Progradation In The Himalayan Foreland, Nicholas Brozovic, Douglas W. Burbank

Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute: Faculty Publications

Although the large-scale stratigraphy of many terrestrial foreland basins is punctuated by major episodes of gravel progradation, the relationships of such facies to hinterland tectonism and climate change are often unclear. Structural reentrants provide windows into older and more proximal parts of the foreland than are usually exposed, and thus provide key insights to earlier phases of foreland evolution. Our magnetostratigraphic studies show that, although the major lithofacies preserved within the Himachal Pradesh structural reentrant in northwestern India resemble Neogene facies in Pakistan, they have a much greater temporal and spatial variability. From 11.5 to 7 Ma, major facies boundaries …

Soapbox: The Academic Research Fleet: An Exciting Time For Renewal, Larry Atkinson Jan 2000

Soapbox: The Academic Research Fleet: An Exciting Time For Renewal, Larry Atkinson

CCPO Publications

(First Paragraph) Academic research ships in the United States are the envy of many scientists around the world. A great strength of our system is the diversity of ships and operators: users have a choice, the system can change. A weakness of the system is that very diversity: sometimes it is hard for us to act together. Nevertheless, we now must act together. The vitality of the academic fleet in the coming decades is at stake. The reason is simply because many of our ships, especially in the intermediate size range, will soon reach the end of their useful life.

Chemical Oxidation Of Mtbe Under O2-Rich And O2-Limited Environments Coupled With Biological Degradation Of Oxidation Byproducts, J. Sutherland, B. Panka, Craig D. Adams, Joel Gerard Burken Jan 2000

Chemical Oxidation Of Mtbe Under O2-Rich And O2-Limited Environments Coupled With Biological Degradation Of Oxidation Byproducts, J. Sutherland, B. Panka, Craig D. Adams, Joel Gerard Burken

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The H2O2/UV Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) Was Investigated to Determine Byproduct Formation under Different Experimental Conditions (PH, Alkalinity, and H2O2/UV Dose). a Key Factor in the Efficiency of the AOP Was the Dissolved Oxygen Concentration. Gas Chromatography/mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) Analysis Was Used to Identify Byproducts Resulting from Oxidation under Oxygen-Rich and Oxygen-Limited Conditions. Resultant Oxidation Byproducts Were Analyzed for their Susceptibility to Biological Degradation. Biodegradation Rate Constants Were Determined and Modeled for the Primary Byproducts of the Advanced Oxidation Process. Inhibition Resulting from the Presence of Multiple Byproducts in a Biological System Was Investigated as Well. Effects of Process Parameters …
