Design And Synthesis Of Boronic Acid-Modified Nucleotides For Fluorescent Sensing And Cell Imaging, Xiaochuan Yang Dec 2009

Design And Synthesis Of Boronic Acid-Modified Nucleotides For Fluorescent Sensing And Cell Imaging, Xiaochuan Yang

Chemistry Dissertations

With the rapidly increasing interest in the field of glycomics, which is the comprehensive study of the roles carbohydrates play in a living system, urgent need for developing quick and highly selective carbohydrate sensors is growing. The boronic acid group, with its electron-deficient structure (6 valence electrons with an open shell), acts as a Lewis acid with high intrinsic affinity towards Lewis bases such as fluoride, cyanide and hydroxyl groups. Specifically, formation of a 5- or 6- membered ring between the boronic acid moiety and a1,2- or 1,3-diol in aqueous solution has been fully explored as a strategy of carbohydrate …

Studies Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles And Surfactants Effects, Singly And In Combinations, On Luminescence Intensity Of Some Aromatic Compounds., Charles Anim Odame-Ankrah Aug 2009

Studies Of Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles And Surfactants Effects, Singly And In Combinations, On Luminescence Intensity Of Some Aromatic Compounds., Charles Anim Odame-Ankrah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Luminescence techniques are sensitive, selective, and widely used in analysis. Luminescence intensity is attenuated by quenchers. This research has focused on the use of surfactants such as CTAB, SDS, and TX-100 singly or together with TiO2 nanoparticles to evaluate their individual and combined effects on some fluorescent aromatic compounds such as pyrene, fluoranthene, anthracene, phenanthrene, and carbazole. Rutile phase TiO2 was synthesized using the low temperature sol-gel method. Carbazole and phenanthrene were severely quenched by all surfactants singly or in combination with TiO2. Anthracene and fluoranthene showed some enhancement in their luminescence intensity. The most dramatic …

Synthesis Of Novel Fluorene-Based Two-Photon Absorbing Molecules And Their Applications In Optical Data Storage, Microfabricatio, Ciceron Yanez Jan 2009

Synthesis Of Novel Fluorene-Based Two-Photon Absorbing Molecules And Their Applications In Optical Data Storage, Microfabricatio, Ciceron Yanez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Two-photon absorption (2PA) has been used for a number of scientific and technological applications, exploiting the fact that the 2PA probability is directly proportional to the square of the incident light intensity (while one-photon absorption bears a linear relation to the incident light intensity). This intrinsic property of 2PA leads to 3D spatial localization, important in fields such as optical data storage, fluorescence microscopy, and 3D microfabrication. The spatial confinement that 2PA enables has been used to induce photochemical and photophysical events in increasingly smaller volumes and allowed nonlinear, 2PA-based, technologies to reach sub-diffraction limit resolutions. The primary focus of …

Room Temperature Fluorescence Spectroscopy As A Tool For The Forensic Trace Analysis Of Textile Fibers, Matthew Rex Jan 2009

Room Temperature Fluorescence Spectroscopy As A Tool For The Forensic Trace Analysis Of Textile Fibers, Matthew Rex

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trace textile fiber evidence is found at numerous crime scenes and plays an important role in linking a suspect to the respective scene. Several methods currently exist for the analysis of trace fiber evidence. Microscopy provides information regarding the fibers material, color and weave. For more detailed chemical analysis chromatographic methods are employed and for discrimination between dyes, liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is currently the method providing the most discrimination. These methods have primarily focused on the dyes used to color the fibers and have not investigated other components that can potentially discriminate among fibers. This dissertation …
