Photodissociation Dynamics In Titan's Atmosphere, Welvidanalage Ruchira Silva
Photodissociation Dynamics In Titan's Atmosphere, Welvidanalage Ruchira Silva
Wayne State University Dissertations
Photodissociation dynamics of molecules relevant to understanding Titan's atmosphere (diacetylene, cyanoacetylene and heptane isomers) are carried out under collisionless condition using the DC slice imaging technique. In diacetylene photodissociation, two-photon processes dominate at 243 nm and 212 nm whereas at 121.6 nm, a one-photon dissociation process dominates. Direct measurement of the lifetime of metastable triplet diacetylene confirms sub-microsecond lifetimes. Photodissociation of cyanoacetylene at 193.3 nm proceeds on the S1 potential energy surface with an exit barrier. In heptane photodissociation, the dissociation occurs on the ground state or low-lying triplet states with nonradiative electronic relaxation. Time-of-flight mass spectroscopy studies in this …

Dechalcogenative Allylic Selenosulfide And Disulfide Rearrangements For Cysteine Modification And Glycoligation, Venkataraman Subramanian
Wayne State University Dissertations
This thesis describes investigations directed at the development of methods for the selenosulfide and disulfide rearrangements for the permanent functionalization of thiols, and in particular of cysteine and carbohydrate based thiols. Emphasis is placed on the newly invented silver mediated allylic desulfurative rearrangement for the primary modification of thiols and the synthesis of complex oligosaccharide mimics.
Chapter one introduces the concept of chemoselective ligations for the modification of macromolecules like carbohydrates and proteins. It overviews the native and non-native ligation techniques for their modification of such entities with a attention focusing on thiol based ligation techniques. The later part of …
Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystal Assembly: From Synthesis To Applications, Qinghong Yao
Metal Chalcogenide Nanocrystal Assembly: From Synthesis To Applications, Qinghong Yao
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation study is focused on (1) the application of an oxidation-induced sol-gel assembly method to formation of CdTe aerogels; (2) extension of existing aerogel compositions and properties by an alternative synthetic approach: cation-exchange reactions; and (3) probing the functionality of CdSe aerogels as optical sensors of Lewis base analytes.
Highly porous CdTe aerogels were successfully synthesized by sol-gel assembly of CdTe nanocrystals with thiolate or nonthiolate (phosphine oxide) ligated surfaces by treatment with tetranitromethane. Both phosphine oxide-capped and the thiolate-capped aerogels exhibit similar structure, morphology and porosimetry properties, suggesting that precursor ligation does not have a no major effect …
Synthesis And Characterization Of Metal Complexes Containing Tetrazolate, Poly(Tetrazolyl)Borate, And Aryl Pentazole Ligands As High Energy Density Materials, Dongmei Lu
Wayne State University Dissertations
Heavier alkaline earth metal tetrazolates have been prepared as cryatals contain aqua ligands and as anhydrous powders, and were characterized by spectral and analytical methods. Potassium bis(tetrazolyl)borate complexes K(BH2(RCN4)2)(H2O)n (R = H, Me, NMe2, and NiPr2) and their 18-crown-6 adducts have been synthesized. In the solid state, complexes where R = H and Me have B-N bonds to the nitrogen atoms proximal to the carbon atom, whereas those with R = NMe2 and NiPr2 possess isomeric B-N bonds to the nitrogen atoms distal to the …

Synthesis Of Functionalized Gpi Anchors And Related Glycoconjugates, Benjamin M. Swarts
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation is divided into two chapters describing the background, significance, and synthesis of GPI anchors and GPI-anchored molecules. GPI anchors are a class of complex glycolipids with the primary purpose of attaching cell surface proteins/glycoproteins to the cell membrane. The first chapter is focused on the synthesis of functionalized GPI anchors, and begins with an introductory look at the discovery, structure, biosynthesis, and biological functions of GPIs. Then, after surveying progress and achievements in GPI synthesis, including discussion about current strategic shortcomings in the field that prevent the chemical synthesis of various GPI derivatives, our approach to accessing uniquely …

Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of The Electronic Behavior In Five-Coordinate Iron(Iii) And Six-Coordinate Cobalt(Iii) Complexes With Electroactive Phenol-Rich Ligands, Marco Mathieu Allard
Wayne State University Dissertations
Three 5 coordinate high-spin Iron(III) complexes containing pentadentate N2O5 ligands were synthesized and characterized, namely, (1) [FeIII(L1)] and (2) [FeIII(L2)]. Structural differences in ligand design,N,N,N'-tris(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)benzene-1,2-diamine for (1) and N,N,N'-tris-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)-N'-methyl-benzene-1,2-diamine for (2), result in complexes that due to their forced geometry, asymmetry, and slightly different electronic structures are able to foster phenoxyl radicals although show a sensitive dependence to both the solvent and the electrolyte system in the cyclic voltammetry. In the presence of TBAClO4 (1) exhibits a two-electron oxidation, whereas in the presence of TBAPF6 (2), , shows three distinct phenolato/phenoxyl radical couples. Both (1) and (2) were redox-cycled 30 …
The Synthesis, Structure, And Properties Of Group 2 Poly(Pyrazolyl)Borates And Their Use For The Atomic Layer Deposition Of Group 2 Borates, Mark J. Saly
Wayne State University Dissertations
A series of heavy alkaline earth complexes containing TpR2-based ligands has been synthesized, structurally characterized, and their properties were investigated. Salt metathesis routes involving MI2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) with either KTpEt2 or KTpnPr2 afforded MTpEt22 or MTpnPr22 in good to moderate yields. All of these complexes are volatile and exceptionally thermally stable, and have acceptable properties for use as group 2 atomic layer deposition (ALD) precursors. In addition, a series of group 2 complexes containing BpR2-based ligand systems were synthesized. Treatment of MI2 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba) with two equivalents of TlBptBu2, KBp, and KBpiPr2 in tetrahydrofuran …

A Bioarchaeological Study Of A Prehistoric Michigan Population: Fraaer-Tyra Site (20sa9), Allison June Muhammad
Wayne State University Dissertations
ABSTRACT
The Saginaw Valley Region has been the focus of Michigan archaeology for many decades. The Late Woodland period of the Saginaw Valley has been characterized as an area that prehistoric people abandoned as a permanent resident, but exploited seasonally during times of scarcity. Furthermore, the valley's resources were exploited by a diverse group of prehistoric peoples, both native to Michigan and those Mississippian `intruders' (Halsey 1976; Holman and Brashler 1999; Norder et al. 2003; Stothers 1999). Though previous studies of the Frazer-Tyra site (20SA9) have included ceramic and lithic analysis (Andrews 1995; Halsey 1976) and a study of mortuary …
I. Microwave-Influenced Diversity-Oriented Synthesis Of Biologically Relevant Small & Natural-Product-Like Molecules Via Multicomponent Coupling Reactions Ii. Synthetic Studies Toward The Total Synthesis Of The Repeating Tetrasaccharide Unit Of Zwitterionic Polysaccharide Ps A1, Soumava Santra
Wayne State University Dissertations
Microwave-influenced diversity-oriented synthesis of biologically relevant small and natural-product-like molecules via multicomponent coupling reactions (MCCRs) have been investigated. Cheap, readily available starting materials in conjunction of microwave irradiation and employment of environmentally benign solvent (e.g. water) provided a common platform that allowed to access a wide array of structurally and skeletally diverse molecules. The investigation allowed us to establish a new paradigm of diversity-activity relationships (DARs) by tuning reacting components of the MCCRs and proved that in contrary to the conventional use of microwave as a rate accelerating tool, it can be used to influence reactivity of molecules. The method …
