Synthesis And Characterization Of Rhenium 2,2′-Pyridylnaphthyridine Metal Complexes, Benjamin F. Solomon

Honors Theses

Rhenium (Re) is a group 7 heavy 5d transition metal in the same family as manganese (Mn) and technetium (Tc). Re-carbonyl complexes are known to be catalysts for many different kinds of reactions from C-C bond formation to reduction reactions like CO2 reduction (CO2RR)1,2. With this in mind, we have prepared a set of six Re-carbonyl complexes of 2,2′-pyridyl-1,6-naphthyridine (1,6- pynap) and 2,2′-pyridyl-1,8-naphthyridine (1,8-pynap), a redox non-innocent ligand containing a bpy moiety as well as an additional aryl nitrogen binding location at which another metal-ligand bond could form. We have synthesized these complexes as precursors …

Synthetic Investigations In Chemical Probe Development Part 1: Design And Synthesis Of Novel Triton X-405 Adenosine Conjugates; Part 2: Synthesis Of 2,8-Dihydroxychrysene, Rachel Irene Hammond

Honors Theses

Although not drugs themselves, chemical probes are a necessary tool in biomedical research for the interrogation of biological systems. In the present synthetic investigation, two chemical probes were developed – a Triton X-405 adenosine conjugate (TX-405A) and 2,8-dihydroxychrysene. The designed TX-405A conjugate was generated in four steps through tosylation and amination of TX-405 such that EDC-coupling of TX-amine with 2’,3’-Isopropylidene adenosine-5’-carboxylic acid afforded TX-405A following acetonide deprotection. The development of TX-405A represents the first report of the synthesis and utilization of a detergent-linked dosimeter. The synthesis of 2,8-dihydroxychrysene provided an in-depth exploration on the unique reactivity of chrysene. The desired …

Applications Of Sodium Azide In The Synthesis Of Tetrazines And Hydrolysis Reactions, My Le

Honors Theses

The inverse electron demand Diels−Alder cycloadditions of heterocyclic azadienes have provided a robust methodology for synthesizing highly substituted and functionalized heterocycles. It is widely used in organic synthesis and the pharmaceutical industry in the divergent construction of screening libraries and bioorthogonal conjugation. Each heterocyclic azadiene was found to possess a unique reactivity toward different classes of dienophiles, display predictable modes of cycloaddition, and exhibit substantial substituent electronic effects impacting their intrinsic reactivity and cycloaddition regioselectivity. Synthesis of 1,2,4,5-tetrazine has been reported in the literature since the late 19th century, showing scientists' tremendous interest in its application.

Herein we attempt to …

Synthesis Of A Dd-Π-Aa Organic Dye For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Hope Lovell May 2021

Synthesis Of A Dd-Π-Aa Organic Dye For Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Hope Lovell

Honors Theses

This project investigates the synthesis of a DD-π-AA (dual donor/dual acceptor) organic dye as a potential sensitizer for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The design of this dye was based off previous research that found dual donor/dual acceptor dyes exhibited promising results when used in a DSC. The donor groups, acceptor groups, and π-bridge were chosen for their stability, ability to absorb in the near-infrared (NIR) region, and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) abilities.

While many components of the dye were synthesized, the final stages of the synthetic scheme were not completed due to the loss of time from COVID-19. Had the …

Comparisons Of Silver Nanoparticle Synthesis Methods By Microwave And Non-Microwave Using Hydrogen Gas As A Reducing Agent, Sofia Erech Hanapin

Honors Theses

Synthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles are of current interest. This research project describes a simple and rapid synthesis of silver nanoparticles upon reduction of Silver (I) oxide (Ag2O) by molecular hydrogen (H2) at elevated temperature (70 – 100 °C) and a pressure of > 1 atmosphere by heating the aqueous mixture using a common kitchen microwave. This reaction generates naked silver colloids that contain no foreign stabilizers other than metal particles in aqueous media. Its application of an antibacterial effect was monitored by using biological cultures using the Kirby-Bauer Test.

Approaches Towards The Synthesis Of Ketamine Metabolites, Ann K. Patrick May 2020

Approaches Towards The Synthesis Of Ketamine Metabolites, Ann K. Patrick

Honors Theses

Major Depressive disorder (MDD) plagues society and stands at the forefront of research as MDD affects approximately 16% of the population. Pharmaceutical drugs, including the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), have been used for MDD treatment and remain a popular option today. However, current antidepressant treatments have proven to be ineffective in just less than half of the patients. Research continues with the goal to better understand the mechanisms of the pathology of depression and to search for other treatment options. For example, the stress-neurogenesis hypothesis investigates the role of stress and decreased neuroplasticity within MDD.

Supporting the stress-neurogenesis hypothesis, …

Silver-Catalyzed Synthesis Of Disubstituted Fluorinated Isoxazoles, Micah Stewart May 2020

Silver-Catalyzed Synthesis Of Disubstituted Fluorinated Isoxazoles, Micah Stewart

Honors Theses

The presence of fluorine can provide organic compounds with useful biological properties, such as increased metabolic stability and drug uptake. Because of these advantages, fluorinated compounds make up about 30% of the drug industry. However, fluorination of complex molecules is difficult due to fluorine’s high electronegativity.

Fluorinated isoxazoles are of particular interest in the pharmaceutical industry. Isoxazoles are five-membered heterocycles with oxygen and nitrogen in the 1, 2 positions that are able to engage in interactions unavailable to other ring structures, conferring advantageous biological properties upon compounds containing them. However, there are limited synthetic routes for fluorinated isoxazoles, and those …

Gold Nanoparticles: Core Conversion Of Au144(Sch2ch2ph)60 To Au99(Sph-Ch3)42 Using Aromatic Thiolate Ligands And Crystallization Of Au99(Sph-Ch3)42, Elizabeth Turnage

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to synthesize Au144(SCH2CH2Ph)60 using a two-step synthesis reaction, and then using this product to conduct a core conversion from Au144(SCH2CH2Ph)60 to Au99(SPh-CH3)42. The Au99(SPh-CH3)42 product will then be used to attempt to form crystals using five different crystal set-up methods. Au144(SCH2CH2Ph)60 is made with aliphatic thiolate ligands, and when it is placed in a mixture containing excess para-methyl benzenethiol, it undergoes a …

The Selective Synthesis Of Oxacalix[6]Arenes And The Exploration Of Azacalix[N]Arenes, W. Christian Crannell Jan 2008

The Selective Synthesis Of Oxacalix[6]Arenes And The Exploration Of Azacalix[N]Arenes, W. Christian Crannell

Honors Theses

Calix[n]arenes, cyclIc molecules composed of "n" benzene rings meta-linked by a methylene to form a macrocycle, are very prevalent jn the literature and enjoy a wide range of applications. However, the oxygen bridged and nitrogen bridged systems, oxacalllx[n)arenes and azacalix[n]arenes, respectively, are far less common because they are synthetically challenging. Furthermore, the selective synthesis of oxacalix[6]arene systems has not previously been well documented, but the systems can now be accessed in a facile approach disclosed here. The insight and knowledge gained from the synthesis of oxacalix{6]arenes has provided a foray into the synthesis of azacalix[nlarenes.

The Synthesis Of Biomimetic Tungsten And Molybdenum Complexes, John Sterling Cole Iii May 2005

The Synthesis Of Biomimetic Tungsten And Molybdenum Complexes, John Sterling Cole Iii

Honors Theses

The synthesis of novel biomimetic molybdenum and tungsten compounds that are potential model complexes for molybdenum and tungsten oxidase enzymes is being pursued. Model complexes such as these provide a better understanding of the basic chemistry of a metal center in an environment similar to that found in particular enzyme active sites. This understanding provides a good starting point for biologists or biochemists studying those biological systems. The first target complex will incorporate a tetradentate-S4 ligand (L) that features two biphenyl-S2 fragments joined by a propyl linker. The second target complex will incorporate a bidentate ligand (L') with a singly …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Bicyclooxacalixarenes, Kevin J. Selby Jan 2005

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Bicyclooxacalixarenes, Kevin J. Selby

Honors Theses

Bicyclooxacalixarenes were synthesized in high yield via a selective, room temperature Sn Ar reaction of phluoroglucinol with 2,6-dichloropyridines. Functionality on the 2,6-dichloropyridioe was varied by changing the electron-withdrawing groups in the 3 and 5 positions (using chlorine, nitro groups, and cyano groups) and the side-chains in the 4-position (using ethyl, butyl, phenyl and ρ-tolyl groups). The resulting cage-like molecules were studied by X-ray crystallography and tested for metal complexation.

Synthesis Of Montiporynes A And B, Traci Jenelle Speed Jan 2003

Synthesis Of Montiporynes A And B, Traci Jenelle Speed

Honors Theses

This thesis reports the first complete synthesis of monriporynes A and B. isomeric diacetylenes that bear α, β unsaturated ketone functionalities. Recently isolated from the stony coral Montipora sp. these compounds are reported to possess in vitro cytotoxic activity against several human solid tumor cells. We have synthesized both isomers in three simple steps. In the first step, l-iodononyne was prepared by reacting 1-nonyne with N-iodosuccinimide and a catalytic amount of silver nitrate. This iodoalkyne was then coupled with propargyl alcohol using copper iodide as the catalyst to give 2,4dodecadiynyl alcohol. Finally, the diacetylenic alcohol was subjected to the Swern …

Approaches And Methodologies For The Synthesis Of Aromatic Natural Products, Christina A. Goudreau Jan 1998

Approaches And Methodologies For The Synthesis Of Aromatic Natural Products, Christina A. Goudreau

Honors Theses

Chemists have been captivated by the ability of most natural products to exhibit biological activity which in effect has made them very attractive to pharmaceutical companies. Many over-the-counter drugs such as aspirin were first extracted from natural products and are now an integral part of most of our lives. More importantly, certain drugs such as taxol, which is used to treat breast cancer, initially came from the bark of a yew tree. Extracting these substances from their natural source and using them medicinally at the demand of the consumers would result in the destruction of the natural habitat. Oftentimes, the …
