Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi Dec 2010

Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

The mechanism of leaching of semiconducting minerals such as PbS, ZnS, UO2, etc., has been the subject of intensive speculation by hydrometallurgists in the early 1950s. The electrochemical mechanism proposed in 1970 by the author in volume 2 of his Principles of Extractive Metallurgy avoids the assumption of forming intermediate complexes that cannot be isolated or identified.

Rationally designed racemic and quasiracemic sulfonamidecinnamic acids assemble to give hydrogen-bonded dimers with coplanar alignment of neighboring olefins. The quasiracemate phase contains near inversion-related motifs with chemically distinct components forming supramolecular heterodimers that undergo asymmetric photodimerization.

Study Of Nano Structure Mn/Alumina Catalyst Deactivation Through Catalytic Oxidation Of O-Vocs, Hosein Afshary May 2010

Study Of Nano Structure Mn/Alumina Catalyst Deactivation Through Catalytic Oxidation Of O-Vocs, Hosein Afshary

Hosein Afshary

the deactivation and selectivity behavior of nanostructure Mn/γ-Al2O3 catalyst in catalytic oxidation of an O-VOC (isopropanol) was studied. The polluted air was simulated and the catalyst was tested in the course of 50-h time-on-stream. Characterization of fresh and used catalysts was done using FT-IR, XRD, SEM and EDS methods. Comparing the testing results of this catalyst and that of the industrial Pt/Al2O3 catalyst showed that prepared catalyst can be suitable for substitution with the expensive pt/Al2O3 catalyst in environmental applications.

Metals: Typical And Less Typical, Transition And Inner Transition, Fathi Habashi Mar 2010

Metals: Typical And Less Typical, Transition And Inner Transition, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

While most chemists agree on what is a metal and what is a non-metal there is a disagreement with respect to what is a metalloid and what is a transition metal. It is believed that this problem can be solved if two new terms are adopted: typical and less typical metals. These new terms will also help reconcile the European Periodic Table versus the North American regarding numbering of groups as well as the IUPAC numbering which could be as well abandoned in favour of group names as will be shown in the manuscript.

Phosphate Industry And The Radon Problem, Fathi Habashi Feb 2010

Phosphate Industry And The Radon Problem, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

The problem of radon generated during the treatment of phosphate rock by sulfuric acid to produce fertilizers can be solved by using nitric acid. In this case radium, which is the source of radon, goes into solution and can be precipitated by a controlled method and safely disposed of. A variety of options are discussed. Text in Farsi with English translation.

Investigation Of Deactivation Of Transition Metal Oxide Catalysts Supported On Γ-Al2o3 During Catalytic Oxidation Of Some Oxygen Containing Vocs In A Tubular Reactor, Hosein Afshary

Hosein Afshary

It is necessary to decrease the emission of Volatile organic compound ( VOCs ) to air and among of all destructive techniques used for decreasing these compounds, Catalytic Oxidation is considered a suitable technique but deactivation of catalysts through catalytic processes is one of the major problems and most be studied. In this Project, at First, gamma alumina supported metal oxide catalysts were made and also industrial Pt catalyst was prepared. Then structure of these catalysts was studied using XRD, SEM and FT-IR techniques. These techniques approved the nanostructure of catalysts. The amount of supported metals in each catalyst was …

Electrodeposition Of Quaternary Alloys In The Presence Of Magnetic Field, Yatimah Alias Jan 2010

Electrodeposition Of Quaternary Alloys In The Presence Of Magnetic Field, Yatimah Alias

Yatimah Alias

Electrodeposition of Ni-Co-Fe-Zn alloys was done in a chloride ion solution with the presence and absence of a Permanent Parallel Magnetic Field (PPMF). The PPMF was applied parallel to the cathode surface. The deposition profile was monitored chronoamperometrically. It was found that the electrodeposition current was enhanced in the presence of PPMF (9 T) compared to without PPMF. The percentage of current enhancement (Gamma%) was increased in the presence of PPMF, with results of Gamma% = 11.9%, 16.7% and 18.5% at -1.1, -1.2 and -1.3 V respectively for a 2400 sec duration. In chronoamperometry, the Composition Reference Line (CRL) for …

Multi-Component Bi-Layers Featuring 1-Octyl-2,3-Dimethylimidazolium Boolean And P-Sulfonatocalix 4 Arene Supermolecules, Yatimah Alias Jan 2010

Multi-Component Bi-Layers Featuring 1-Octyl-2,3-Dimethylimidazolium Boolean And P-Sulfonatocalix 4 Arene Supermolecules, Yatimah Alias

Yatimah Alias

Multi-component solid state structures containing 1-octyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium cations, anionic p-sulfonatocalix[4]arenes and/or large mono-phosphonium cations, as well as lanthanide metal ions are readily accessible, which have the calixarenes organised into bi-layers with gadolinium(III) coordinated between them. The imidazolium ring is confined in the calixarene cavity, essentially forming "molecular capsules'' based on two calixarenes, or with the n-octyl chain penetrating the adjacent bi-layer, with the nature of the calixarene-dimethylimidazolium interplay mapped out using Hirshfeld surface analysis. The supermolecules [1-octyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene] are persistent in aqueous solutions ((1)H NMR).

The Rhizosphere: A Synchrotron- Based View Of Nutrient Flow In The Root Zone, Theodore K. Raab, David A. Lipson

At two energy “endpoints” of the EM spectrum accessible to synchrotron biologists (IR radiation and soft X-rays), we have found experimental methods providing unique opportunities to observe processes and test hypotheses essential to understanding plantsoil- microbe interactions. Availability of IR synchrotron beamlines will continue to expand worldwide, and we hope that plant and microbial biologists will incorporate the type of spectral data presented in this chapter as just one of a legion of “-omics” methods. Considering the shear flux of C through belowground ecosystems annually (and how poorly constrained they are in many regions), synchrotrons must continue to demand the …

Aqua Science Through The Ages. An Illustrated History Of Water, Fathi Habashi Jan 2010

Aqua Science Through The Ages. An Illustrated History Of Water, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Water a component of the Four Elements considered by the ancient philosophers as essential for survival, played, and is still playing an essential role in society. Great civilizations in ancient times developed along great rivers. The ancient peoples knew how to manage water supplies by digging canals, controlling floods, and using water for irrigation. They designed equipment that used water to measure the time, to determine the density of solids, to fight fires, and to create vacuum. Modern engineers exploited water flow to design and construct huge hydroelectric power stations. Waterways and navigation systems were also an essential element for …
