The presentation is devoted to the development of the new catalytic process for oxidation of SO2 to SO3 on the base of the novel Pt-containing catalyst with Zr-Si fiber-glass support. It was demonstrated that such catalyst reveals excellent low-temperature activity and unique long-term operation stability. The process may be applied for production of SO3 for conditioning of flue gases from coal-fired powerplants.

New Generation Of Catalytic Technologies For Environmental Protection On The Base Of Fiber-Glass Catalysts, Bair S. Balzhinimaev, Andrey N. Zagoruiko

Andrey N Zagoruiko

Novel glass-fiber based catalysts containing extra-low amounts of noble metals (0.01-0.02% mass of Pt or Pd) demonstrate unique performance in many catalytic reactions, resulted from the ability of the glass fibers to stabilize the transient metals in the glass bulk in a highly-dispersed form. Moreover, specific heat/mass transfer properties, original geometry, high flexibility and high mechanical strength of such catalysts give the way to develop really new catalytic processes and novel reactor designs. The paper is dedicated to the successful research and development (from fundamental research issues to pilot and semi-industrial tests) of different catalytic oxidation processes based on application …

Theoretical And Computational Studies Of Interstellar C2nH And Sic2m+1H, Ryan C. Fortenberry

Ryan C. Fortenberry

This work focuses on computation of simulated spectra the C2nH family (n = f1, 2, : : :g) of carbon chain rad- ical molecules and their silicon analogues, SiC2m+1H (m = f0, ng), that are potential carriers of the Di_use Interstellar Bands (DIBs). High-level quantum chem- ical computations for the ground- and excited-states of these radicals indicate agreement with experimen- tal data that the ground-state of C2H is 2Ʃ+ while that of C6H, SiCH, SiC3H, and SiC5H is 2π. On the other hand, most of …

Multiobjective Optimization Of An Industrial Lpg Thermal Cracker Using A First Principles Model, Reza Nabavi, G.P Rangaiah, Ali Niaei, Dariush Salari

Seyed Reza nabavi

Thermal cracking of hydrocarbons in the presence of steam is the most important process for the production of ethylene and propylene, which are the raw materials for many petrochemicals. In this work, multiobjective optimization (MOO) of an industrial LPG (liquefied petroleum gas containing mainly propane and butane) thermal cracker is studied using the elitist nondominated sorting genetic algorithm adapted with the jumping gene operator, NSGA-II-aJG. A first principles model based on free radical mechanism for LPG thermal cracking is employed for optimization. Several bi- and triobjective optimization problems are solved; these problems involved maximization of annual ethylene/propylene production, selectivity and …

Preparation Of Wo3 Nanoparticles Using Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide Supermolecular Template, Nilofar Asim, S. Radiman, M.A. Bin Yarmo

Nilofar Asim

WO3 is one of the most interested metal oxides because of its application as catalysts, sensors, electrochromic devices, ceramic, solar cell, pigments and so on. More investigation is needed to find the good and low cost method for preparation of WO3 nanoparticles with uniform morphology and narrow distribution using a surfactant mediated method. Approach: In this study, the synthesis of WO3 nanoparticles was accomplished using a cationic surfactant (cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide) as the organic supermolecular template and WCl6 and NH4 OH as the inorganic precursor and counter ion source, respectively. The effects of reaction temperature and surfactant concentration in …

Optimization Of Pyrolysis Of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches, Nor Kartini Binti Abu Bakar

Nor Kartini Binti Abu Bakar

In this study, pyrolysis of oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) was investigated using a quartz fluidizedfixed bed reactor. The effects of various pyrolysis temperatures, particle sizes and heating rates on the yields of the products were investigated. The temperature of pyrolysis and heating rate were varied in the range of 300°C-700°C and 10°C-100°C min1, respectively. The particle size was varied in the range of<90, 91-106, 107-125 and 126-250 μm. The products obtained from pyrolysis of EFB were bio-oil, char and gas. Under the experimental conditions, the maximum bio-oil yield was 42% obtained at 500°C, with a heating rate of 100°C min 1 and a particle size of 91-1 06 μm. The maximum yield of char was 42%, obtained at a pyrolysis temperature of 300°C, heating rate of 30°C min1 and particle size of 91-106 μm. Meanwhile, the optimum yield of gas was 46%, which could be achieved at a pyrolysis temperature of 700°C, heating rate of3O°C min1 and particle size of 107-125 μm.

The Zn-II atom in the title compound, [Zn(C8H7N3O2S)-(C12H8N2)]center dot 2C(2)H(6)OS center dot H2O, is N,N '-chelated by the N-heterocycle and N, O, S-chelated by the deprotonated Schiff base in a distorted square-pyramidal enviroment. Hydrogen bonds link the mononuclear molecule, the water and the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) molecules into a linear chain motif. One DMSO molecule is disordered over two positions in respect of the S atom in an approximate 1:1 ratio.

Surface Investigation Of Chitosan Film With Fatty Acid Monolayers, M Misran Jan 2009

Surface Investigation Of Chitosan Film With Fatty Acid Monolayers, M Misran

Misni Misran

The surface pressure-molecular area (pi-A) isotherm curves of two fatty acids of different chain lengths, i.e. stearic (C(18)) and arachidic (C(20)) acids, were obtained by using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique. Results showed clear isotherm plots with limiting mean molecular area around 21 angstrom(2) for both acids. However, the monolayer was found to collapse at higher than 33 mN m(-1) and 21 mN m(-1) for stearic acid and arachidic acid respectively. The effect of Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers of the acids was investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Chitosan film, before and after dipping in water, was also studied by means of AFM so …

Chemistry And Metallurgy In The Great Empires, Fathi Habashi Jan 2009

Chemistry And Metallurgy In The Great Empires, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

It is remarkable that certain countries expand to become great empires then as time goes by they gradually decline while others rise. This book attempts to briefly trace the history of chemistry and metallurgy through the different empires that became at one time great and then faded away. In 272 pages 21.5 x 28 cm, the author outlines the inter-relation of chemistry, metallurgy, mining, and medicine, the idea of the divinity of kings and the formation of nations, and finally the rise and fall of the empires. He then covers the ancient and medieval empires, followed by the empires from …

Science, Technology, And Society, Fathi Habashi Jan 2009

Science, Technology, And Society, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Science, technology, and society is a vast and complex question. It is discussed here from five points: social responsibility of scientists, migration and movement of scholars, philanthropy and its role in education and culture, enlightened despots and their influence on science and culture, and finally the social aspects of mining. The book is meant for the general reader but can benefit scientists as well. It is fully illustrated with colored pictures. It is hoped that it will serve as an introduction to this field to the young generation and inspire them to serve society.
