Soumyadeep Mukhopadhyay Dr

Colloidal gas aphron dispersions (CGAs) can be described as a system of microbubbles suspended homogenously in a liquid matrix. This work examines the performance of CGAs in comparison to surfactant solutions for washing low levels of arsenic from an iron rich soil. Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) and saponin, a biodegradable surfactant, obtained from Sapindus mukorossi or soapnut fruit were used for generating CGAs and solutions for soil washing. Column washing experiments were performed in down-flow and up flow modes at a soil pH of 5 and 6 using varying concentration of SDS and soapnut solutions as well as CGAs. Soapnut …

The model grass Brachypodium distachyon is increasingly used to study various aspects of grass biology. A large and genotypically diverse collection of B. distachyon germplasm has been assembled by the research community. The natural variation in this collection can serve as a powerful experimental tool for many areas of inquiry, including investigating biomass traits. We surveyed the phenotypic diversity in a large collection of inbred lines and then selected a core collection of lines for more detailed analysis with an emphasis on traits relevant to the use of grasses as biofuel and grain crops. Phenotypic characters examined included plant height, …

Deep desulfurization of fuels has attracted lot of attention from growing number of researchers due to more stringent regulations imposed on sulfur content. There is a great demand to comply the regulation in current technology (hydrodesulfurization) because it requires high pressure, high temperature and high hydrogen consumption. Furthermore, aromatic sulfur compounds are also inefficient to be removed in current technology. Ionic Liquids (ILs) as class of green solvent actually plays important role as a promising alternative for desulfurization of fuels. This study focuses on the selection of potential ILs for extraction of aromatic sulfur compound involving the effect of higher …

Performance Evaluation Of Two-Stage Electrokinetic Washing As Soil Remediation Method For Lead Removal Using Different Wash Solutions, Yee Sern Ng, Bhaskar Sen Gupta, Mohd Ali Hashim

Ng Yee-Sern

The study explores the application of a two-stage electrokinetic washing system on remediation of lead (Pb) contaminated soil. The process involved an initial soil washing, followed by an electrokinetic process. The use of electrokinetic process in soil washing not only provided additional driving force for transporting the desorbed Pb away from the soil but also reduced the high usage of wash solution. In this study, the effect of NaNO3, HNO3, citric acid and EDTA as wash solutions on two-stage electrokinetic washing system were evaluated. The results revealed that a two-stage electrokinetic washing process enhanced Pb removal efficiency by 2.52-9.08% and …

Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Chemically Synthesized Copper Oxide Nanosheets, Mahdi Shahmiri Dec 2013

Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Chemically Synthesized Copper Oxide Nanosheets, Mahdi Shahmiri

mahdi shahmiri

Copper oxide (CuO) nanosheets were obtained by a quick-precipitation method using Cu(NO3)2 and NaOH in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Different sizes of CuO nanosheets were achieved by varying the PVP concentration. The crystal structure, morphology, and optical properties of the CuO nanosheets were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Higher PVP concentrations produced CuO nanosheets with enhanced crystalline structure, reduced particle size, and enlarged band gap. Nonlinear optical characteristics were examined by the Z-scan technique using a blue continuous wave laser beam operated at 405 nm. Increased PVP concentration from 0.5 wt% to 5 …

Preparation Of Pvp-Coated Copper Oxide Nanosheets As Antibacterial And Antifungal Agents, Mahdi Shahmiri Oct 2013

Preparation Of Pvp-Coated Copper Oxide Nanosheets As Antibacterial And Antifungal Agents, Mahdi Shahmiri

mahdi shahmiri

Copper oxide (CuO) nanosheets synthesized in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were characterized with respect to antimicrobial activity by quick precipitation method. Different sizes and shapes of CuO nanosheets were obtained by simple variations of PVP concentrations. The x-ray diffraction results revealed the formation of pure-phase CuO with monoclinic structure. Transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the average ratio of length to width of these nanosheets increased with increasing PVP concentrations. Due to the quantum size effect, CuO nanosheets exhibit a blue shift in the ultraviolet-visible spectra. Field emission scanning electron microscopy results showed that as the concentration of PVP increased, well-defined morphologies …

Evidence Does Not Support A Role For Gallic Acid In Phragmites Australis Invasion Success, Jeffrey D. Weidenhamer, Mei Li, Joshua Allman, Robert G. Bergosh, Mason Posner Feb 2013

Evidence Does Not Support A Role For Gallic Acid In Phragmites Australis Invasion Success, Jeffrey D. Weidenhamer, Mei Li, Joshua Allman, Robert G. Bergosh, Mason Posner

Jeffrey D. Weidenhamer

Gallic acid has been reported to be responsible for the invasive success of nonnative genotypes of Phragmites australis in North America. We have been unable to confirm previous reports of persistent high concentrations of gallic acid in the rhizosphere of invasive P. australis, and of high concentrations of gallic acid and gallotannins in P. australis rhizomes. The half-life of gallic acid in nonsterile P. australis soil was measured by aqueous extraction of soils and found to be less than 1 day at added concentrations up to 10,000 mu g g(-1). Furthermore, extraction of P. australis soil collected in North Carolina …

Travelling In Cuba, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Contact with Cuban scientists was established in 1986 when two researchers from Centro de Investigaciones para Industria Minero Metalurgica in Havana visited Laval University to get acquainted with research activities in the area of extractive metallurgy. This was followed in early 1987 by two more researchers from the same centre. Invitations were then received in late 1987, 1989, and 2008 to visit the nickel refineries in Cuba and to hold seminars at the University of Havana. The present report outlines these activities.

High- Accuracy Quartic Force Field Calculations For The Spectroscopic Constants And Vibrational Frequencies Of 11A′ L-C3H-: A Possible Link To Lines Observed In The Horsehead Nebula Pdr, Ryan C. Fortenberry, Xinchuan Huang, T. D. Crawford, Timothy J. Lee Jan 2013

Lee

Ryan C. Fortenberry

It has been shown that rotational lines observed in the Horsehead nebula photodissociation region (PDR) are probably not caused by l-C3H+, as was originally suggested. In the search for viable alternative candidate carriers, quartic force fields are employed here to provide highly accurate rotational constants, as well as fundamental vibrational frequencies, for another candidate carrier: 11 A' C3H. The ab initio computed spectroscopic constants provided in this work are, compared to those necessary to define the observed lines, as accurate as the computed spectroscopic constants for many of the known interstellar …

Spectroscopic Constants And Vibrational Frequencies For L-C3H+ And Isotopologues From HighlyAccurate Quartic Force Fields: The Detection Of L-C3H+ In The Horsehead Nebula Pdr Questione, Xinchuan Huang, Ryan C. Fortenberry, Timothy J. Lee Jan 2013

Lee

Ryan C. Fortenberry

Very recently, molecular rotational transitions observed in the photon-dominated region of the Horsehead nebula have been attributed to l-C3H+. In an effort to corroborate this finding, we employed state-of-the-art and proven high-accuracy quantum chemical techniques to compute spectroscopic constants for this cation and its isotopologues. Even though the B rotational constant from the fit of the observed spectrum and our computations agree to within 20 MHz, a typical level of accuracy, the D rotational constant differs by more than 40%, while the H rotational constant differs by three orders of magnitude. With the likely errors in …

Tourbillion In The Phase Space Of The Bray-Liebhafsky Nonlinear Oscillatory Reaction And Related Multiple-Time-Scale Model, Zeljko D. Cupic Jan 2013

Tourbillion In The Phase Space Of The Bray-Liebhafsky Nonlinear Oscillatory Reaction And Related Multiple-Time-Scale Model, Zeljko D. Cupic

Zeljko D Cupic

The mixed-mode dynamical states found experimentally in the concentration phase space of the iodate catalyzed hydrogen peroxide decomposition (The Bray-Liebhafsky oscillatory reaction) are discussed theoretically in a related multiple-time-scale model, from the viewpoint of tourbillion. With aim to explain the mixed-mode oscillations obtained by numerical simulations of the various dynamical states of a model for the Bray-Liebhafsky reaction under CSTR conditions, the folded singularity points on the critical manifold of the full system and Andronov-Hopf bifurcation of the fast subsystem are calculated. The interaction between those singularities causes occurrence of tourbillion structure.

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cuo Nanosheets In Polyvinylpyrrolidone By Quick Precipitation Method, Mahdi Shahmiri Jan 2013

Synthesis And Characterization Of Cuo Nanosheets In Polyvinylpyrrolidone By Quick Precipitation Method, Mahdi Shahmiri

mahdi shahmiri

In this project, CuO nanosheets were grown successfully in polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) by a simple and quick chemical method in the absence of templates. Copper nitrate, PVP and sodium hydroxide were used as copper precursor, stabilizer and accelerator, respectively. The products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The result of the XRD and EDAX confirmed the formation of pure single-phase CuO. Generation of the CuO nanosheets and nanorods were confirmed by UV–visible spectra. FE-SEM depicted that layered …
