Ab Initio And 1H Nmr Study Of The Zn(Ii) Complexes Of A Nido- And A Closo-Carboranylporphyrin, Petia Bobadova-Parvanova, Yuko Oku, Anura Wickramasinghe, Randall W. Hall, Graca H. Vicente

Randall W. Hall

n ab initio study of a promising nido-carboranylporphyrin for the boron neutron capture therapy of tumors, and of its closo precursor is reported. Base-induced deboronation of neutral ZnDCP, believed to exist as a mixture of 3 stereoisomers, produces the tetraanionic ZnDCP4- as a complex mixture of isomers. 1H NMR data and ab initio calculations support these findings. The position of the axial pyridine ligand in ZnDCP4- and the orientation of the endo hydrogen atoms on the open faces of the nido-carborane cages significantly influence the total energy of the ZnDCP4- structures. It is suggested that the "cocktail" of isomers possibly …

Investigation Of New Chelation Ion Chromatography Procedure To Determine The Surface Composition Of Powdered Metal Oxide Samples In The Solid State., B. Peebles, Michael Setter

Michael P. Setter

Numerous tests have been conducted on the feasibility of characterizing the surfaces of metal oxide powders using HPLC. An in-line filter housing was modified to serve as a sample chamber to replace the sample loop. A gradient pump was used to gradually increase eluent acidity to find the conditions at which the surface of a metal oxide powder began to dissolve. The theoretical masses of surface monolayers of metal oxide powders were compared with the experimentally determined masses of dissolved material thought to be from the surface to test whether surface and bulk dissolution phenomena in acidic conditions are separable …

Food Based Approaches For A Healthy Nutrition In Africa, Mamoudou Hama Dicko May 2004

Food Based Approaches For A Healthy Nutrition In Africa, Mamoudou Hama Dicko

Pr. Mamoudou H. DICKO, PhD

The latest estimates of the FAO demonstrate the problems of the fight against hunger. These problems are manifested by the ever-increasing number of chronically undernourished people worldwide. Their numbers during the 1999-2001 period were estimated at about 840 million of which 798 million live in developing countries. Sub-Saharan Africa alone represented 198 million of those. In this part of Africa the prevalence of undernourishment ranges from 5-34%, causing growth retardation and insufficient weight gain among one third of the children under five years of age and resulting in a mortality of 5-15% among these children. Malnutrition resulting from undernourishment is …

Tools And Strategies For Processing Diffusion-Ordered 2d Nmr Spectroscopy (Dosy) Of A Broad, Featureless Resonance: An Application To Methylaluminoxane (Mao), Jan Lasse Eilertsen, Randall W. Hall, Larry S. Simeral, Leslie G. Butler Feb 2004

Tools And Strategies For Processing Diffusion-Ordered 2d Nmr Spectroscopy (Dosy) Of A Broad, Featureless Resonance: An Application To Methylaluminoxane (Mao), Jan Lasse Eilertsen, Randall W. Hall, Larry S. Simeral, Leslie G. Butler

Randall W. Hall

DOSY has been extremely successful in many studies of molecular weight distributions, especially when the components are separable along the chemical shift axis. However, an unresolved NMR resonance yields the familiar problem of overlapping exponential decays. In a study of methylaluminoxane (MAO), a set of data processing and simulation tools were developed: read Bruker data files (Matlab); preliminary non-linear least-squares fit with f-test (Matlab); movie generation of the fits (Matlab); conversion of diffusion coefficients to molecular masses through molecular volumes (Gaussian-98); and simulation of DOSY data sets for various molecular mass distributions (Mathematica). These tools are presented here and briefly …

Diethylaluminum Chloride Mediated Vinylsilane Synthesis: Comparison Of Different Solvent Systems., Man Lung Kwan, Merle Battiste, Megan Macala, Sylvia Aybar, Nicholas James, Joseph Haoui

Man Lung Desmond Kwan

Aromatic ketones were converted to one-carbon elongated-vinylsilanes in a convenient one-pot operation via the Peterson protocol. Reactions were conducted in two different solvents for comparison: pentane and triethylamine. Results indicate that triethylamine appeared to be a more suitable solvent for such a transformation producing vinylsilanes with great chemo- and stereo-selectivity than pentane.

Solvent-Free Conversion Of Alpha-Naphthaldehyde To 1-Naphthoic Acid And 1-Naphthalenemethanol: Application Of The Cannizzaro Reaction, John Esteb, Keith Gligorich, Stacy O'Reilly, Jeremy Richter

John Esteb

The Cannizzaro reaction is routinely covered in organic textbooks, but owing to the shortage of suitable procedures for the undergraduate teaching laboratory, this reaction is seldom performed in a first-year organic chemistry class. In this experiment, powdered potassium hydroxide and α-naphthaldehyde are heated under solvent-free conditions to produce 1-naphthoic acid and 1-naphthalenemethanol in 86% and 79% yields, respectively. The solvent-free nature of this procedure greatly reduces the quantity of waste generated by students relative to the typical solvent-based method of preparation. Simple Epoxide Formation For The Organic Laboratory Using Oxone, John Esteb Dec 2003

Simple Epoxide Formation For The Organic Laboratory Using Oxone, John Esteb

John Esteb

We present an epoxide formation experiment for a second-semester organic chemistry laboratory. This oxidation utilizes Oxone, a commercially available oxidizing agent, in the industrially relevant process of epoxide formation. The oxidant performing the oxidation is dimethyldioxirane, which is formed in situ. This experiment demonstrates a simple synthesis of an epoxide and formation of a secondary oxidizing agent.

Environment-Friendly Organic Synthesis Using Bismuth Compounds. Bismuth Triflate Catalyzed Synthesis Of Substituted 3,4-Dihydro-2h-L-Benzopyrans, Ram S. Mohan, Mai P. Nguyen, Joshua N. Arnold, Katherine E. Peterson Dec 2003

Environment-Friendly Organic Synthesis Using Bismuth Compounds. Bismuth Triflate Catalyzed Synthesis Of Substituted 3,4-Dihydro-2h-L-Benzopyrans, Ram S. Mohan, Mai P. Nguyen, Joshua N. Arnold, Katherine E. Peterson

Ram S. Mohan

A highly catalytic method for the synthesis of dihydrobenzopyrans from salicylaldehydes has been developed. An extension of this method to the synthesis of a pyrano [2,3,b]benzopyran has also been achieved. Bi(OTf)3.xH2O (1< x < 4) (0.1mol%) smoothly catalyzes the condensation of substituted salicylaldehydes with 2,2-dimethoxypropane to give the corresponding substituted 3,4-dihydro-2H-1-benzopyrans as a mixture of diastereomers (9:1) in moderate yields. The relative configuration of the methoxy groups in the two diastereomers was established by NOE experiments. The advantages of this method include the use of an easy to handle, inexpensive and relatively non-toxic catalyst.

Ram S. Mohan

1Aromatic aldehydes are smoothly converted into the corresponding acylals in good yields in the presence of 3–10 mol% Bi(NO3)3•5H2O. Ketones are not affected under the reaction conditions. The relatively non-toxic nature of the catalyst, its ease of handling, easy availability and low cost make this procedure especially attractive for large-scale synthesis.

Dr. Mohammad Mansoob Khan

The condensation reaction of N-acetylaniline with 1,3-diaminopropane in 2 : 1 mole ratio under reflux condition generates an intermediate species having C55N bonds. The in situ reaction of the intermediate with HCHO and 1,3-diaminopropane in the presence of perchloric acid results in an off-white solid product. Analytical, FAB mass, IR, 1H NMR and electronic spectral data of this solid are consistent with the formation of the dihydroperchlorate salt of an unsymmetrical 32-membered [N12] macrocycle [L.2HClO4] via a capping mechanism of the intermediate species. Reactions of [L 2HClO4] with Group 12 metal salts, MX2, and their precursors, [M(Ph3P)2Cl2], produce bimetallic complexes …
