Aztec Survey Of The Central Molecular Zone: Modeling Dust Seds With Hierarchical Bayesian Analysis, Yuping Tang Jul 2019

Aztec Survey Of The Central Molecular Zone: Modeling Dust Seds With Hierarchical Bayesian Analysis, Yuping Tang

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, we present a study based on the AzTEC/Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) survey of dust continuum at 1.1mm on the central 200 parsecs (The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ)) of our Galaxy. Owing to its unusually high gas density and turbulence, strong magnetic field, and high cosmic ray flux, the CMZ represents an initial condition for star-formation typical of starburst galaxies in the distant universe. In order to understand dust properties in such an extreme environment. We perform a joint SED analysis of existing dust continuum surveys on the CMZ, from a wavelength of 160 μm to 1.1 mm. …

An Anomalous Extinction Law In The Cep Ob3b Young Cluster: Evidence For Dust Processing During Gas Dispersal, Thomas S. Allen, Jakub J. Prchlik, Thomas S. Mageath, R. A. Gutermuth, Judith L. Pipher, Tim Naylor, R.D. Jeffries Jan 2014

We determine the extinction law through Cep OB3b, a young cluster of 3000 stars undergoing gas dispersal. The extinction is measured toward 76 background K giants identified with MMT/Hectospec spectra. Color excess ratios were determined toward each of the giants using V and R photometry from the literature, g, r, i, and z photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and J, H, and Ks photometry from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. These color excess ratios were then used to construct the extinction law through the dusty material associated with Cep OB3b. The extinction law through Cep OB3b is …

The Redshift Search Receiver 3 Mm Wavelength Spectra Of 10 Galaxies, Ronald L. Snell, Gopal Narayanan, Min S. Yun, Mark Heyer, Aeree Chung, William M. Irvine, Neal R. Erickson, Guilin Liu Jan 2011

The Redshift Search Receiver 3 Mm Wavelength Spectra Of 10 Galaxies, Ronald L. Snell, Gopal Narayanan, Min S. Yun, Mark Heyer, Aeree Chung, William M. Irvine, Neal R. Erickson, Guilin Liu

Gopal Narayanan

The 3 mm wavelength spectra of 10 galaxies have been obtained at the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory using a new, very broadband receiver and spectrometer, called the Redshift Search Receiver (RSR). The RSR has an instantaneous bandwidth of 37 GHz covering frequencies from 74 to 111 GHz and has a spectral resolution of 31 MHz (~100 km s–1). During tests of the RSR on the FCRAO 14 m telescope the complete 3 mm spectra of the central regions of NGC 253, Maffei 2, NGC1068, IC 342, M82, NGC 3079, NGC 3690, NGC 4258, Arp 220, and NGC 6240 were …

The Connections Between Qso Absorption Systems And Galaxies: Low-Redshift Observations, Todd M. Tripp, David V. Bowen Mar 2005

The Connections Between Qso Absorption Systems And Galaxies: Low-Redshift Observations, Todd M. Tripp, David V. Bowen

Quasar absorption lines have long been recognised to be a sensitive probe of the abundances, physical conditions, and kinematics of gas in a wide variety of environments including low-density intergalactic regions that probably cannot be studied by any other means. While some pre-Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations indicated that Mg II absorption lines arise in gaseous galactic halos with a large covering factor, many early QSO absorber studies were hampered by a lack of information about the context of the absorbers and their connections with galaxies. By providing access to crucial ultraviolet resonance lines at low redshifts, deployment of HST …

Arcsecond Imaging Of Co Emission In The Nucleus Of Arp 220, N Z. Scoville, Min S. Yun, P M. Bryant Aug 1997

Arcsecond Imaging Of Co Emission In The Nucleus Of Arp 220, N Z. Scoville, Min S. Yun, P M. Bryant

Min S. Yun

We report high-resolution (1A) imaging of CO (2È1) and dust continuum emission in the ultraluminous galaxy Arp 220. The CO (1È0) line was also imaged at 2A resolution for comparison. Both data sets recover essentially all of the observed single-dish line emission. Our aperture synthesis maps reveal for the Ðrst time, multiple components in the dense gas: peaks corresponding to each of the double nuclei (separated by 0A.95 at P.A.\101¡) seen in the near infrared and radio continuum and a more extended disklike structure at P.A.\53¡, similar to the dust lane seen in optical images. Approximately two-thirds of the total …
