Alfred Russel Wallace (1823−1913) was an early advocate for the rational assessment of likelihood of extraterrestrial life. Current efforts to evaluate the situation have ranged from the heavily self-indulgent to the more objective, and it is still often difficult to decide just how much of the information we are receiving on the subject is dependable. An attempt is made here to cut through the haze and reduce the matter to elementals.

The term “homeland security”, seems to have become synonymous with terrorism in the minds of the general public. However, there are other threats to the security of the United States homeland that can be just as, if not more, devastating than terrorism. Included among these other threats is the potential of an asteroid collision with Earth. Historically, asteroid impact events have been responsible for the devastation of our planet and many of the mass extinction events encountered throughout the geologic record. The interstellar medium (ISM) is the dynamic system of gas and dust that fills the space between the stars within galaxies. Due to its integral role in star formation and ga-lactic structure, it is important to understand how the ISM itself evolves over time, in-cluding the process of cooling and condensing required to form new stars. Organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells are advanced, newly emerging technologies that are lightweight, mechanically flexible devices with highthroughput processes from low cost material in a variety of colors. Rathnayake et al. of Western Kentucky University have developed a nanostructure-based OPV cell. Presented in this thesis is a model and simulation of a generalized PV powered system that can predict the performance of solar arrays in various environmental conditions. The simulation has been carried out in Matlab/Simulink, and upon entering the cell’s parameters, it provides key electrical characteristics such as the cell’s I-V curve and efficiency information. We seek to better understand the physical constraints under which White Dwarf stars ultimately become Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), an important test of the robustness of these tools in precisely measuring Dark Energy, as the definite progenitor system still remains elusive. The host galaxy environments of Type Ia supernovae provide our best opportunity for constraining the mechanism(s) of SN Ia production, i.e., the stars involved and the incubation times (tied to stellar ages), and the sensitivity of SNe Ia to changes in the local metallicity. A comparison between two Mesoscale models, Colorado State University Regional Atmospheric Model System (RAMS) version 4.4 coupled with the Land‐Ecosystem– Atmosphere Feedback Model (LEAF2) and Penn State/NCAR’s Mesoscale Model (MM5) coupled with NOAH Land Surface Model, was conducted in order to assess the sensitivity of forecasted boundary layer variables to anomalous volumetric soil moistures. The study elaborates on the findings of Quintanar et al. (2008) using the study’s experimental design as a template for our numerical model comparison. Investigating The Formation Of Extra-Galactic Radio Jets, Casey R. Watson

Jets of collimated particles are among the most intriguing characteristics of active galactic nuclei. In this paper two models of particle interactions in active galactic nuclei are used to explore a possible initial acceleration mechanism of the jets: charge separation. Model I ignores the effects of both collisions and electromagnetic forces and does not predict charge separation. Model II incorporates collisions and electromagnetic interactions, and, although it too predicts no charge separation, it provides a more physically sound model of active nucleus than does Model I.

A study of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in an open universe is presented. We discuss the data and justification behind our choice of an open universe for investigation in this thesis, as opposed to the closed universe theory, which is more appealing in some ways. We explicitly define all parameters used in the analysis of magnetohydrodynamic Bianchi Type V cosmologies and outline the formulation behind them. We then proceed to present a solution to a Bianchi Type V magnetohydrodynamic cosmology with a diagonal metric. After that, the results are compared with present observations. We review the evidence for existence of a magnetic field of the galaxy and whatever evidence there is of an intergalactic magnetoionic medium. We then consider the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) of such a medium. The formation of galaxies through purely gravitational means in an expanding universe is then reviewed. Next the role of magnetohydrodynamics in such a universe is analyzed for their effects on galaxy formation. Finally, the importance of MED behavior in the early universe is emphasized from physical considerations and from present day evidence. Simulative Investigation Of The Detection Of Modes Of Luminosity Variation In Astrophysical Sources, James Collins

Five astronomical data analysis methods were evaluated, using computer simulation techniques, for minimum detection levels, periodicity detection, and parameter estimation sensitivities. The evaluation of these methods was accomplished using three basic waveforms with the addition of ten “random” noise samples from a Gaussian distribution of known parameters. The chi-square and t-test methods were evaluated in detecting low-amplitude variability and brightness level shifts. Results indicate both methods have a strong dependence on the estimation of the standard deviation (σ) where a 0.1 change in σ will affect detection rates by ten to twenty-five percent at the ninety-five percent confidence level. The purpose of this investigation was to study ultraviolet radiation effects on rotifers. The rotifer studied was Philodina acuticornis odiosa Milne. Isolation cultures were used to grow the rotifers individually in separate U-plate depressions. The source of ultraviolet radiation consisted of four mercury germicidal lamps used in combination to deliver a uniform flux of 315 uW/cm2 over the sample. Five groups of rotifers, one control and four experimental groups of 96 each, were used. The rotifers used were 2-10 hours of age at the beginning of the experiment. The experimental groups were exposed to uv radiation for 3 minutes, …
