Context. Star formation rate functions (SFRFs) give an instantaneous view of the distribution of star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies at different epochs. They are a complementary and more stringent test for models than the galaxy stellar mass function, which gives an integrated view of the past star formation activity. However, the exploration of SFRFs has been limited thus far due to difficulties in assessing the SFR from observed quantities and probing the SFRF over a wide range of SFRs.

Aims. We overcome these limitations thanks to an original method that predicts the infrared luminosity from the rest-frame UV/optical color …

Using infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we perform the first inventory of aromatic feature emission (also commonly referred to as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission) for a statistically complete sample of star-forming galaxies in the local volume. The photometric methodology involved is calibrated and demonstrated to recover the aromatic fraction of the Infrared Array Camera 8 μm flux with a standard deviation of 6% for a training set of 40 SINGS galaxies (ranging from stellar to dust dominated) with both suitable mid-infrared Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph spectra and equivalent photometry. A potential factor of 2 improvement could be realized with …

We present the first results from a confusion-limited map of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey-South (GOODS-S) taken with the AzTEC camera on the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment. We imaged a field to a 1σ depth of 0.48–0.73 mJy beam−1, making this one of the deepest blank-field surveys at mm-wavelengths ever achieved. Although by traditional standards our GOODS-S map is extremely confused due to a sea of faint underlying sources, we demonstrate through simulations that our source identification and number counts analyses are robust, and the techniques discussed in this paper are relevant for other deeply confused surveys. …

Aztec Half Square Degree Survey Of The Shades Fields - I. Maps, Catalogues And Source Counts, Je Austermann, Min Yun, Et. Al.

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

We present the first results from the largest deep extragalactic mm-wavelength survey undertaken to date. These results are derived from maps covering over 0.7 deg2, made at λ= 1.1 mm, using the AzTEC continuum camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The maps were made in the two fields originally targeted at λ= 850 μm with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) in the SCUBA Half-Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) project, namely the Lockman Hole East (mapped to a depth of 0.9–1.3 mJy rms) and the Subaru/XMM–Newton Deep Field (mapped to a depth of 1.0–1.7 mJy rms). …

Using a complete sample of ~300 star-forming galaxies within 11 Mpc of the Milky Way, we evaluate the consistency between star formation rates (SFRs) inferred from the far ultraviolet (FUV) non-ionizing continuum and Hα nebular emission, assuming standard conversion recipes in which the SFR scales linearly with luminosity at a given wavelength. Our analysis probes SFRs over 5 orders of magnitude, down to ultra-low activities on the order of ~10-4 M sun yr-1. The data are drawn from the 11 Mpc Hα and Ultraviolet Galaxy Survey (11HUGS), which has obtained Hα fluxes from ground-based narrowband imaging, and UV fluxes from …

The Chandra COSMOS Survey (C-COSMOS) is a large, 1.8 Ms, Chandra program that has imaged the central 0.5 deg2 of the COSMOS field (centered at 10 h , +02 o ) with an effective exposure of ~160 ks, and an outer 0.4 deg2 area with an effective exposure of ~80 ks. The limiting source detection depths are 1.9 × 10–16 erg cm–2 s–1 in the soft (0.5-2 keV) band, 7.3 × 10–16 erg cm–2 s–1 in the hard (2-10 keV) band, and 5.7 × 10–16 erg cm–2 s–1 in the full (0.5-10 keV) band. Here we describe the strategy, design, …

The survey description and the near-, mid-, and far-infrared flux properties are presented for the 258 galaxies in the Local Volume Legacy (LVL). LVL is a Spitzer Space Telescope legacy program that surveys the local universe out to 11 Mpc, built upon a foundation of ultraviolet, Hα, and Hubble Space Telescope imaging from 11HUGS (11 Mpc Hα and Ultraviolet Galaxy Survey) and ANGST (ACS Nearby Galaxy Survey Treasury). LVL covers an unbiased, representative, and statistically robust sample of nearby star-forming galaxies, exploiting the highest extragalactic spatial resolution achievable with Spitzer. As a result of its approximately volume-limited nature, LVL augments …

We report an overdensity of bright submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) in the 0.15 deg2 AzTEC/COSMOS survey and a spatial correlation between the SMGs and the optical-IR galaxy density at z≲ 1.1. This portion of the COSMOS field shows a ∼3σ overdensity of robust SMG detections when compared to a background, or ‘blank-field’, population model that is consistent with SMG surveys of fields with no extragalactic bias. The SMG overdensity is most significant in the number of very bright detections (14 sources with measured fluxes S1.1 mm > 6 mJy), which is entirely incompatible with sample variance within our adopted …

The Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Co Mapping Survey Of The Taurus Molecular Cloud, Gopal Narayanan, Mh Heyer, C Brunt, Pf Goldsmith, Ronald L. Snell, D Li

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

The FCRAO Survey of the Taurus molecular cloud observed the 12CO and 13CO J = 1–0 emission from 98 deg2 of this important, nearby, star-forming region. This set of data with 45'' resolution comprises the highest spatial dynamic range image of an individual molecular cloud constructed to date and provides valuable insights to the molecular gas distribution, kinematics, and the star formation process. In this contribution, we describe the observations, calibration, data processing, and characteristics of the noise and line emission of the survey. The angular distribution of 12CO and 13CO emission over 1 km …

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

We present an analysis of the radio properties of large samples of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z ~ 3, 4, and 5 from the COSMOS field. The median stacking analysis yields a statistical detection of the z ~ 3 LBGs (U-band dropouts), with a 1.4 GHz flux density of 0.90 ± 0.21 μJy. The stacked emission is unresolved, with a size <1, or a physical size <8 kpc. The total star formation rate implied by this radio luminosity is 31 ± 7 M yr−1, based on the radio-FIR correlation in low-redshift star-forming galaxies. The star formation rate derived from a similar analysis of the UV luminosities is 17 M yr−1, without any correction for …

Results on the properties of warm molecular hydrogen in 57 normal galaxies are derived from measurements of H2 rotational transitions, obtained as part of SINGS. This study extends previous extragalactic surveys of emission lines of H2 to fainter and more common systems (LFIR = 107-6 × 1010 L). The 17 μm S(1) transition is securely detected in the nuclear regions of 86% of galaxies with stellar masses above 109.5 M. The derived column densities of warm H2 (T ≥ 100 K), although averaged over kiloparsec-scale areas, are commensurate with values observed in resolved photodissociation regions. They amount to between 1% …

Nature And Completeness Of Galaxies Detected In The Two Micron All Sky Survey, Dh Mcintosh, Ef Bell, Md Weinberg, N Katz

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) provides the most comprehensive data set of near-infrared galaxy properties. We cross correlate the well-defined and highly complete spectroscopic selection of over 155 000 bright (r≤ 17.5 mag) galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) main galaxy sample (MGS) with 2MASS sources to explore the nature and completeness of the 2MASS (K-band) selection of nearby galaxies. Using estimates of total galaxy brightness direct from the 2MASS and SDSS public catalogues, corrected only for Galactic extinction, we find that 2MASS detects 90 per cent of the MGS brighter than r= 17 mag. We …

Structure Of The Large Magellanic Cloud From 2mass, Md Weinberg, S Nikolaev Jan 2001

Structure Of The Large Magellanic Cloud From 2mass, Md Weinberg, S Nikolaev

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

We derive structural parameters and evidence for extended tidal debris from star count and preliminary standard candle analyses of the Large Magellanic Cloud based on Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) data. The full-sky coverage and low extinction in Ks present an ideal sample for structural analysis of the LMC. The star count surface densities and deprojected inclination for both young and older populations are generally consistent with previous work. We fit the projected density with an exponential disk or spherical power-law model with an optional two-dimensional elliptical bar. The derived disk scale length is R = 1.42 ± 0.01 kpc for …

A Global Photometric Analysis Of 2mass Calibration Data, S Nikolaev, Md Weinberg, Mf Skrutskie, Rm Cutri, Sl Wheelock, Je Gizis, Em Howard

Astronomy Department Faculty Publication Series

We present results from the application of a global photometric calibration (GPC) procedure to calibration data from the first 2 years of the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS). The GPC algorithm uses photometry of both primary standards and moderately bright "tracer" stars in 35 2MASS calibration fields. During the first 2 years of the survey, each standard was observed on approximately 50 nights, with about 900 individual measurements. Based on the photometry of primary standard stars and secondary tracer stars and under the assumption that the nightly zero-point drift is linear, the GPC ties together all calibration fields and …
