The Intersection Between Science And Computer Science Is Almost Empty, Dick Hamlet
The Intersection Between Science And Computer Science Is Almost Empty, Dick Hamlet
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Traditionally, a science such as physics overlaps with mathematics and engineering in a way that has been astonishingly productive. The math provides precise expression for the science, which in turn supplies the engineering with the information it needs to exploit physical phenomena. Computer science naturally wishes to put itself in the center of the traditional picture as a science. Unfortunately, it won't wash. The `science' of programming is pure and simple mathematics, not science. The distinction is more than linguistic, since science and mathematics have quite distinct goals and methods. By making the wrong choice, computer science research has been …
The Final Journey Of The Saturn V, Andrew R. Thomas, Paul N. Thomarios
The Final Journey Of The Saturn V, Andrew R. Thomas, Paul N. Thomarios
University of Akron Press Publications
The Saturn V rocket carried men to the moon, and its history reflects the US space program's rise, success, and demise. In 1961, John F. Kennedy challenged America to put a man on the moon and win the space race. Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon in 1969 in the culmination of a concerted scientific and technological effort.
A little over a decade later, the Saturn rocket was tossed aside to rot in a field near the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The rocket's carcass became the home to flora and fauna. Like the space program itself, the rocket …

Eti‐385 As A Novel Anti‐Emetic Against Drug Induced Emesis, Theresa Fennell, James Lucot, Samantha Spitak, Emily Smith, Teresa Garret
Symposium of Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities Materials
Drugs currently used to prevent emesis (nausea and vomiting) target only one or a few of the pathways used by emetic stimuli to trigger the reflex. Thus, an anti-emetic drug will only be effective against some stimuli. Prior work determined that 8-OH-DPAT (DPAT, a 5-HT1A agonist) was a universally effective anti-emetic. Although DPAT prevented emesis, it also elicited an extreme anxiety response making it unsuitable for therapeutic use. Presently, there exists no universal anti-emetic drug. We tested a proprietary drug developed from DPAT, ETI-385, which successfully prevented emesis in musk shrews against chemotherapy, drug and motion stimuli. For FDA purposes, …
Bubbles, Drops, And Streams: A Flow Visualization Cell, Said Shakerin
Bubbles, Drops, And Streams: A Flow Visualization Cell, Said Shakerin
SOECS Exhibitions
The goal of this activity was to develop an interactive flow visualization cell to demonstrate dynamic interaction between two fluids, olive oil and air, each occupying one half of the cell. The goal was met and a museum quality unit was created as shown in Figure 1 (download document to view). Thanks to Dean Brigid Welch’s support, the unit is installed at the University Library next to the Information Commons for the campus community to enjoy the inherent beauty and appreciate complexity of fluid flow.
