Predicting Post-Procedural Complications Using Neural Networks On Mimic-Iii Data, Namratha Mohan Dec 2018

Predicting Post-Procedural Complications Using Neural Networks On Mimic-Iii Data, Namratha Mohan

LSU Master's Theses

The primary focus of this paper is the creation of a Machine Learning based algorithm for the analysis of large health based data sets. Our input was extracted from MIMIC-III, a large Health Record database of more than 40,000 patients. The main question was to predict if a patient will have complications during certain specified procedures performed in the hospital. These events are denoted by the icd9 code 996 in the individuals' health record. The output of our predictive model is a binary variable which outputs the value 1 if the patient is diagnosed with the specific complication or 0 …

Feasible Form Parameter Design Of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry, Thomas L. Mcculloch Dec 2018

Feasible Form Parameter Design Of Complex Ship Hull Form Geometry, Thomas L. Mcculloch

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This thesis introduces a new methodology for robust form parameter design of complex hull form geometry via constraint programming, automatic differentiation, interval arithmetic, and truncated hierarchical B- splines. To date, there has been no clearly stated methodology for assuring consistency of general (equality and inequality) constraints across an entire geometric form parameter ship hull design space. In contrast, the method to be given here can be used to produce guaranteed narrowing of the design space, such that infeasible portions are eliminated. Furthermore, we can guarantee that any set of form parameters generated by our method will be self consistent. It …

Virtual Robot Climbing Using Reinforcement Learning, Ujjawal Garg Dec 2018

Virtual Robot Climbing Using Reinforcement Learning, Ujjawal Garg

Master's Projects

Reinforcement Learning (RL) is a field of Artificial Intelligence that has gained a lot of attention in recent years. In this project, RL research was used to design and train an agent to climb and navigate through an environment with slopes. We compared and evaluated the performance of two state-of-the-art reinforcement learning algorithms for locomotion related tasks, Deep Deterministic Policy Gradients (DDPG) and Trust Region Policy Optimisation (TRPO). We observed that, on an average, training with TRPO was three times faster than DDPG, and also much more stable for the locomotion control tasks that we experimented. We conducted experiments and …

An Adaptive Memory-Based Reinforcement Learning Controller, Keith August Cissell

MSU Graduate Theses

Recently, the use of autonomous robots for exploration has drastically expanded--largely due to innovations in both hardware technology and the development of new artificial intelligence methods. The wide variety of robotic agents and operating environments has led to the creation of many unique control strategies that cater to each specific agent and their goal within an environment. Most control strategies are single purpose, meaning they are built from the ground up for each given operation. Here we present a single, reinforcement learning control solution for autonomous exploration intended to work across multiple agent types, goals, and environments. The solution presented …

Improving Ultra-Wideband Localization By Detecting Radio Misclassification, Cory A. Mayer

Master's Theses

The Global Positioning System (GPS) and other satellite-based positioning systems are often a key component in applications requiring localization. However, accurate positioning in areas with poor GPS coverage, such as inside buildings and in dense cities, is in increasing demand for many modern applications. Fortunately, recent developments in ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology have enabled precise positioning in places where it was not previously possible by utilizing multipath-resistant wide band pulses.

Although ultra-wideband signals are less prone to multipath interference, it is still a bottleneck as increasingly ambitious projects continue to demand higher precision. Some UWB radios include on-board detection of …

Cmos Compatible Memristor Networks For Brain-Inspired Computing, Can Li Nov 2018

Cmos Compatible Memristor Networks For Brain-Inspired Computing, Can Li

Doctoral Dissertations

In the past decades, the computing capability has shown an exponential growth trend, which is observed as Moore’s law. However, this growth speed is slowing down in recent years mostly because the down-scaled size of transistors is approaching their physical limit. On the other hand, recent advances in software, especially in big data analysis and artificial intelligence, call for a break-through in computing hardware. The memristor, or the resistive switching device, is believed to be a potential building block of the future generation of integrated circuits. The underlying mechanism of this device is different from that of complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) …

Integration Of Robotic Perception, Action, And Memory, Li Yang Ku Oct 2018

Integration Of Robotic Perception, Action, And Memory, Li Yang Ku

Doctoral Dissertations

In the book "On Intelligence", Hawkins states that intelligence should be measured by the capacity to memorize and predict patterns. I further suggest that the ability to predict action consequences based on perception and memory is essential for robots to demonstrate intelligent behaviors in unstructured environments. However, traditional approaches generally represent action and perception separately---as computer vision modules that recognize objects and as planners that execute actions based on labels and poses. I propose here a more integrated approach where action and perception are combined in a memory model, in which a sequence of actions can be planned based on …

Enhancing 3d Visual Odometry With Single-Camera Stereo Omnidirectional Systems, Carlos A. Jaramillo Sep 2018

Enhancing 3d Visual Odometry With Single-Camera Stereo Omnidirectional Systems, Carlos A. Jaramillo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

We explore low-cost solutions for efficiently improving the 3D pose estimation problem of a single camera moving in an unfamiliar environment. The visual odometry (VO) task -- as it is called when using computer vision to estimate egomotion -- is of particular interest to mobile robots as well as humans with visual impairments. The payload capacity of small robots like micro-aerial vehicles (drones) requires the use of portable perception equipment, which is constrained by size, weight, energy consumption, and processing power. Using a single camera as the passive sensor for the VO task satisfies these requirements, and it motivates the …

Personality Recognition For Deception Detection, Guozhen An Sep 2018

Personality Recognition For Deception Detection, Guozhen An

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Personality aims at capturing stable individual characteristics, typically measurable in quantitative terms, that explain and predict observable behavioral differences. Personality has been proved to be very useful in many life outcomes, and there has been huge interests on predicting personality automatically. Previously, there are tremendous amount of approaches successfully predicting personality. However, most previous research on personality detection has used personality scores assigned by annotators based solely on the text or audio clip, and found that predicting self-reported personality is a much more difficult task than predicting observer-report personality. In our study, we will demonstrate how to accurately detect self-reported …

Manana: A Generalized Heuristic Scoring Approach For Concept Map Analysis As Applied To Cybersecurity Education, Sharon Elizabeth Blake Gatto Aug 2018

Manana: A Generalized Heuristic Scoring Approach For Concept Map Analysis As Applied To Cybersecurity Education, Sharon Elizabeth Blake Gatto

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Concept Maps (CMs) are considered a well-known pedagogy technique in creating curriculum, educating, teaching, and learning. Determining comprehension of concepts result from comparisons of candidate CMs against a master CM, and evaluate "goodness". Past techniques for comparing CMs have revolved around the creation of a subjective rubric. We propose a novel CM scoring scheme called MAnanA based on a Fuzzy Similarity Scaling (FSS) score to vastly remove the subjectivity of the rubrics in the process of grading a CM. We evaluate our framework against a predefined rubric and test it with CM data collected from the Introduction to …

Detecting Saliency By Combining Speech And Object Detection In Indoor Environments, Kiran Thapa

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Describing scenes such as rooms, city streets, or routes, is a very common human task that requires the ability to identify and describe the scene sufficiently for a hearer to develop a mental model of the scene. When people talk about such scenes, they mention some objects of the scene at the exclusion of others. We call the mentioned objects salient objects as people consider them noticeable or important in comparison to other non-mentioned objects. In this thesis, we look at saliency of visual scenes and how visual saliency informs what can and should be said about a scene when …

Transfer Learning With Mixtures Of Manifolds, Thomas Boucher Jul 2018

Transfer Learning With Mixtures Of Manifolds, Thomas Boucher

Doctoral Dissertations

Advances in scientific instrumentation technology have increased the speed of data acquisition and the precision of sampling, creating an abundance of high-dimensional data sets. The ability to combine these disparate data sets and to transfer information between them is critical to accurate scientific analysis. Many modern-day instruments can record data at many thousands of channels, far greater than the actual degrees of freedom in the sample data. This makes manifold learning, a class of methods that exploit the observation that high-dimensional data tend to lie on lower-dimensional manifolds, especially well-suited to this transfer learning task. Existing manifold-based transfer learning methods …

Finding Nonlinear Relationships In Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data With Genetic Programming, James Hughes Jul 2018

Finding Nonlinear Relationships In Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Data With Genetic Programming, James Hughes

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

The human brain is a complex, nonlinear dynamic chaotic system that is poorly understood. When faced with these difficult to understand systems, it is common to observe the system and develop models such that the underlying system might be deciphered. When observing neurological activity within the brain with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), it is common to develop linear models of functional connectivity; however, these models are incapable of describing the nonlinearities we know to exist within the system.

A genetic programming (GP) system was developed to perform symbolic regression on recorded fMRI data. Symbolic regression makes fewer assumptions than …

A Machine Learning Framework To Classify Mosquito Species From Smart-Phone Images, Mona Minakshi Jun 2018

A Machine Learning Framework To Classify Mosquito Species From Smart-Phone Images, Mona Minakshi

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mosquito borne diseases have been a constant scourge across the globe resulting in numerous diseases with debilitating consequences, and also death. To derive trends on population of mosquitoes in an area, trained personnel lay traps, and after collecting trapped specimens, they spend hours under a microscope to inspect each specimen for identifying the actual species and logging it. This is vital, because multiple species of mosquitoes can reside in any area, and the vectors that some of them carry are not the same ones carried by others. The species identification process is naturally laborious, and imposes severe cognitive burden, since …

This project explores extractive text summarization using the capabilities of Deep Learning. The goal of this project is to create an application with a neural network to take in text as its input, and create a summary that is a shorter, condensed version of the input text. This has been implemented in Python by configuring and training a neural network that takes in a vector of features that are extracted from the text using various Natural Language Processing libraries. The implementation demonstrates that we can train simple deep neural networks to successfully summarize text.

The Effect Of Endgame Tablebases On Modern Chess Engines, Christopher D. Peterson Jun 2018

The Effect Of Endgame Tablebases On Modern Chess Engines, Christopher D. Peterson

Computer Engineering

Modern chess engines have the ability to augment their evaluation by using massive tables containing billions of positions and their memorized solutions. This report examines the importance of these tables to better understand the circumstances under which they should be used. The analysis conducted in this paper empirically examines differences in size and speed of memorized positions and their impacts on engine strength. Using this technique, situations where memorized tables improve play (and situations where they do not) are discovered.

Optimizing Tensegrity Gaits Using Bayesian Optimization, James Boggs Jun 2018

Optimizing Tensegrity Gaits Using Bayesian Optimization, James Boggs

Honors Theses

We design and implement a new, modular, more complex tensegrity robot featuring data collection and wireless communication and operation as well as necessary accompanying research infrastructure. We then utilize this new tensegrity to assess previous research on using Bayesian optimization to generate effective forward gaits for tensegrity robots. Ultimately, we affirm the conclusions of previous researchers, demonstrating that Bayesian optimization is statistically significantly (p < 0:05) more effective at discovering useful gaits than random search. We also identify several flaws in our new system and identify means of addressing them, paving the way for more effective future research.

Cuoricino Thermal Pulse Classification By Machine Learning Algorithms, Joshua Mann Jun 2018

Cuoricino Thermal Pulse Classification By Machine Learning Algorithms, Joshua Mann

Physics

Many of the various properties of neutrinos are still a mystery. One unknown is whether neutrinos are Majorana fermions or Dirac fermions. Cuoricino and CUORE are experiments that aim to solve this mystery. Noise reduction in these experiments hinges on the ability to discern among alpha, beta and gamma particle detections using the thermal pulses they create. In this paper, we look at Cuoricino data and attempt to classify pulses, not as alpha, beta or gamma particles, but rather as signal, noise or calibration data. We will use this preliminary testing ground to examine various machine learning algorithms' abilities in …
